3 PREVIEWING TODAY1_52 GAME S A SECTION Some hard ones to pick again this week I missed out by one straight kick with TWO of my selections last week Here goes - the same could happen again today! The match of the day at Elsternwick Park - North Old Boys had their closest call last week while St Bernard's were pipped by De La Salle Mauro Borcich and Mick Welsh are consistently giving great drive but it is not realistic to individualise with such an even all-round side North and St Bernard's are traditional contestants - the result could therefore be close but will favour the Northerners Well done Coburg - the rallying past heroes may have done it for you Perhaps Chris Hansen should return to Old Trinity - Fitzroy don't appear to fully appreciate his talent But Coburg's success will be short lived - Marcellin will be too strong today University Blacks emerged out of last week's round as a definite four chance They must crunch old Trinity today to further enhance those prospects and bolster perceatage Vacation always casts a shadow over a University predicition - but I see no problem today Caulfield Grammarians, another finals "hopeful", will find Ormond a different proposition to the 'Blues I doubt whether Caulfield will be able to sufficently nullify the influence Alan Naylor will give from the centre square This could well be an exciting finish but Ormond should maintain its winning formula University Blues have disappointed and must pick-up or they could find themselves threatened with relegation De La Salle sparkled last week and will be "jumping" today the 'Blues have something up their sleeves they could be the victim of a percentage building onslaught I hope I'm right because I'm punting on the bottom sides pulling a surprise or two to even up the competition SELECTIONS:- University Blacks, Marcellin, Ormond, North Old Boys, De La Salle - JIM <F'IDGE B SECTIO N After a very promising start, Geelong h<ve slipped of recent weeks, and Old Scotch through their well spread strength and the experience and!current good form of John Morgan should 'ake the points Collegians and Reservoir Old Boys look to be evenly matched as both appear to lack big man strength and rely heavily on their roving divisions In this area Reservoir look better served and should take the points by a narrow margin Page 4 The match between the Old Boys of Haileybury and Melbou rn e Grammar at Keysborough looks to be the pick of the round For the home side Code, Houghton and Paul are playing well but the Navy Blues could have more talent to back up their big guns Cordner, Brown and Pisarski, and should score comfortably Old 'Paradians put in a bad one last Saturday to spoil their good record, and they will need t o improve rapidly to rate a chance against Monash Blues where the youthful Chris Moore and Dave Bickford are firing consistently ii must, without great conviction, give Parade another chance however Ivanhoe somewhat surprised me with their big effort last Saturday I have many recollections of stout marking efforts from the reliable Quinlivan over the years, but not many of him kicking 6 goals If Ivanhoe can line up with their strong players in attacking positions, then they will win many more I do not think St Kilda have enough players in form at the moment to handle Ivanhoe's confident play and foresee an easy win for the Magpies of the VAFA SELECTIONS : Old Scotch, Reservoir O B, Old Melbu rnians, Old Paradians, Ivanhoe - ALF KEAM C SECTIO N Alex finally got out of the queue at Tullamari ne and has left with a pretty hard act to follow I face the threat of disinheritance, if he has fallen from the top of the Tipsters' Tally when he returns from overseas It's a high standard to maintain without his mystical visions Fortunately St Bede's did the right thing in IF Section and kept Norm Nugent at arms length Rags to riches side Old Carey had a great win against Old Xavs last week and it seems they have tu rn ed the corner I believe they can go on and add another four points against Old Ivanhoe in what should be a close game Alex must be something of a clairvoyant having wa rned Old Xav's against complacency last week I would like to see MHSOB break the ice but can't see them cracking it against Xavs who will be anxious to avenge their defeat last week and regain top spot UHSOB need to win to keep up with the four and look to strong at home to Kew Hampton Rovers after a good win a g ains t Old I's should give Parkside a good run for their money but Parkside look the likely winners The match of the day between Fawkner and AJAX is a hard one to tip AJAX had a big win last week following their close battle with Xavs the week before Although they kicked the sweep Fawkner should have too much strength and will be hard to beat at home My Selections : Old Carey, Parkside, UHSOB, Old Xaverians, Fawkner - Graeme Johnson THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - M,ay 28, 1977 D SECTIO N I quote from my last week's comments "Alphington will have no troubles in disposing of 'bottom of the ladder Power rtouse" - "State Bank seem to be settling down and concentrating on the game - State Bank to win" The wind produces strange results or did it!! This week, despite last week, Alphington will be too strong for La Trobe Blacks Elsternwick at home to Assumption will also be hard to beat and on past form I eould not tip Assumption Old Brighton should not have too much trouble gainst Old Geelong who have not been performing well lately State Bank against Power House Power House confidlnt after their win against Alphington could fall into that known trap - over confidence; I will still go for State Bank St Kevin's proved me wrong last week but not this week - Old Camberwell to win SELECTIONS : Alphington, Elsternwick, Old Brighton, State Bank, Old!Camberwell - KEITH FINDLAY E SECTIO N National Bank will entertain Old Mentonians but don't look likely to open their iccount now that Old Mentonians are in the iour Beverley Hills went down to Heatherton : st week so I can't offer them much joy ~sainst West Brunswick, even at home West to stay put at the top of the ladder Heatherton should be able to win a g ain, even pick up a point or two of percentage, against ANZ Bank even after ANZ's win last week Brunswick at home to AMP Society should be a close game AMP could benefit from their bye last week and Brunswick could be feeling last weeks bumps still AMP to keep some hope alive Selections : AMP Society, Old Mentonians, West Brunswick, 1-Ieatherton - SYD WHIT- FIELD F SECTION Last Saturday results were fairly predictable (unlike those in other Sections!), Today's games will have a great bearing on the composition of the F Section ladder Let us hope that results will follow predictions as second place in the Tipsters' Tally Is at stake St Bede's who have bounced back into form travel to Glenroy where the locals hope for their second win St Bede's judged on 1977 statistics, have better forward and back lines These two factors should ensure, a St Bede's victory Leaders Bulleen-Templestowe go west (geographically at least) The combine had a jolt last week while Footscray Tech slipped by the seaside Consistency coupled with all round strength are the major factors which prompt me to select Bulleen Templestowe Commonwealth Bank further vindicated my confidence by pushing the leaders last week against the disappointing Monash Whites the 'Bankers should add to their strength by scoring an easy victory A red victory is my prediction for the academic's clash at Bundoora However the question is; which Red? My prediction is that LaTrobe Reds will prove too strong for their Melbourne University counterparts The big game of the round will be at Bulleen where Thornbury will meet the local United side This promises to be a no holds barred g ame for the coveted second place on the ladder The defences of each side appear equally strong on paper However I suspect the Thornbury triple-pronged attack featuring the skills of Hayman, Lucas and Staff will manage to convert enough opportunities to win the game SELECTIONS: St Bede's, Bulleen-Templestowe, Commonwealth Bank, LaTrobe Reds, Thornbu ry - NORM NUGENT JUNIOR SECTION 1 Results of today's round will, even at this stage (af the season, have a big bearing on the Final Four composition Three of today's four games should be real hard battles The exception is the Ormond versus Ivanhoe game in which Ivanhoe will continue on their merry way with another percentageboosting win As predicted, Old Scotch are coming along and forming into a team to be respected University Blacks will give them a real test following on their fine will last week against Monash University Old Scotch should win because of their keener attitude and teamwork The Monash University boys are ve ry anxious to return to their early season form and atone for recent poor form, on the other hand St Bernard's will not let their grip on a place in the final four slip without a great struggle, but even with their home ground advantage Monash University will be too strong for them North Old Boys will have a great tussle with University Blues out at the odd Westein Oval North have tightened their game up in recent weeks and will make it three in a row today as their all round strength will be too much for the Blues to overcome SELECTIONS : Old Scotch, Ivanhoe, Monash University, North Old Boys - CLIFF BASTOW JUNIOR SECTION 2 Last week's results were disastrous in more than one way for your scribe I am sure that everyone associated with amateur football wi ll join with me in congratulating Kew on winning their first junior game since ente ri ng a side last year The bookmaker has been instructed to adjust his board and Hampton Rovers are now favourites for the flag Full forward James is really burning and at half time last week had kicked all of the Rovers 6 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - May 28, 1977 Page 5

4 goals West Brunswick will be making the most of their home ground but will find the opposition too skiiled Spurred on by last week's success the Kew boys will be eager to win their first game at home However it would not be practical to expect them to overcome the speed of De La Salle, particularly as they will be doing everything possible to make up for their defeat last week MHSOB w travel to Geelong While the students ill be fresh from their recent vacation, if some do not, get lost on the way down some will certainly be lost on the big ground at Queen's Park Consequently they will be returning home without the four points The racy, rapid, relentless, remarkable, rigorous, robust boys from Reservoir play host to Alphington The visitors have proven themselves to be a mystery side Their form has been patchy, but nevertheless thy will take the game right up to the Old Boys However the overall strength of the home side will enable them to hold on for a win Old Paradians and Caulfield Grammarians were both defeated 'last week and their clash at Bundoora should provide an interesting game Caulfield have a more even team and should win SELECTIONS : Hampton Rovers, De La Salle, Geelong, Reservoir, Caulfield Grammraians - PETER NATHAN Page 6 Try a nifty ' French model in Armadale Renault from John Ould RENAULT John Ould Motors Pty Ltd 837 High St Armadale RENAULT PEUGEOT B MW SAAB LMCT782 6CR'JO 1 4 The body fittin g guernsey that can't be caught! 8 STYLED I N BRI-NYLO N 0 BRILLIAN T COLOUR S O AN IMPOSSIBLE ' TACKL E REDUCE D COS T Tough Shorts that move with body action F~ 0 EASY TO ;3 Lautvvtre NO BUTTONS - ZIP FLY t SHRINKPROOF! * COLOUR FAST! 0 COL OURS: Red, Royal Blue, Bottle Green, Navy, Gold, Black, White, THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - May 28, 1977 L <~CXING BAC K by NOEL RUNDLE 5 YEARS AGO Coburg staged yet another form reversal to defeat previously unbeaten Caulfield Grammarians by 43 points and leave Ormond the only unbeaten side Coburg's brilliant second quarter burst of 83 to nil won the game ; Leckie, Willoughby and Zylan were their best S S B (in 'E') also lost their first game when they went down to Marcellin by 29 points Marcellin "blitzed" Bank in the fir3t quarter, scoring 9 10 to nil Stars were Mahon, P Toohey, and Hurley (Marc) and Inglis, Spithill, and Wright (S S B ) 200 games to John (Herb) Adams (North Old Boys )and 100 to John Butcher (Caul Gram ) (John is now a member of V A FA executive - Ed ) End of an era for Old Haileybury when veteran Andrew Home, 205 games in 12 years, played his last game In his 12 years Andrew only missed 8 games, none of which was due to injury 10 YEARS AGO Phil Hay (St Kilda C B C), Peter Bowring (Old!Haileyburians) and Spence Williams ( Old Paradians) chalked up 100 games Coburg, after winning the first four, suffered their second defeat by 27 points it the hands of Caulfield Gramma rians AJAX and Parkside were undefeated leaders in ID' Section with 6 wins each Only senior teams yet to break the 4 ce were Old Melbu rn ians ('B') and Elsternwick ('E') Old Scotch,(2313) annihilated University Blacks (4 11) 25 YEARS AGO Uaurie (Socks) Holman played his 100th game for Ormond Adrian Schrader (still well known to many followers) starred for Old Xaverians M H S O B (1 6) against Ivanhoe (10 16 ) recorded their lowest score ever Bill Mason (now an umpire) was starring for Ivanhoe Juniors Coburg (13 18) to East Malvern (49) continued their unbeaten run in `C' Section Murray (11 goals) was a star in Caulfiel d Grammarians' big win over E S &A Bank (2318) to '(6 3) x t ek'a M atches Jume 4 On ground of first-named club at 2 o m - Reserves at am N Old Trinity Gramm v N otiorth Old Boys Marcellin O C v University Blacks University Blues V St Bernard's O C (at Elsternwick Park ) Caulfield Gramm v Coburg Ormond v De La Salle O C B SECTIO N Old Scotch Coll v Monash Blues Reservoir O B v Geelon g St Kilda CBOC v Old Paradians Old Haileyburians v Collegians Old Melburnians v Ivanhoe C SECTION Old Ivanhoe Gramm v Old Xaverians Parkside v Old Carey Gramm A J AX v MH S Old Boys U H S Old Boys v Hampton Rovers Kew v Fawkner La Trobe Blacks D SECTIO N v Power House Assumption O C v Alphington Old Camberwell Gramm v State Bank Old Geelong v Elsternwick Old Brighton Gramm v St Kevin's O B E SECTION AM P Society v West Brunswick North Brunswick v Brunswick A N Z Bank v Beverley Hills Old Mentonians v Heatherton National Bank a bye F SECTION St Bede's O C v University Reds Bulleen-Templestowe v Glenroy Thornbury v La Trobe Reds Monash Whites v Footscray IT Commonwealth Bank v Bulleen Unite d JUNIOR SECTION 1 Old Scotch Coll v Monash University Ivanhoe v University Blacks University Blues v St Bernard's O C Coburg v North Old Boys Fawkner v Ormond JUNIOR SECTION 2 MH S Old Boys v Caulfield Gramm De La Salle O C v Geelong Alphington v Old Paradian s West Brunswick v Kew Hampton Rovers v Reservoir O B THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER - May 28, 1977 Page 7
