3 AWAULFIELD KNOCK NORTH OUT OF,PREM IERSHIP FIGHT Kew too strong for Old Trinity Narrow wins to Fairfield, Power House By GEORGE McTAGGART Caulfield Grammarians finished too strongly for North Old Boys in the First Semi-final last Saturday, and knocked North out of the fight for this year's premiership. Old Trinity could not match Kew in the second half and faded out of the picture. Both C Section Semi-finals produced exciting finishes to high-scoring games - Fairfield beat Old Melburnians by three points and Power House "pipped" Parkside by two points. It was even closer in the Old Haileybury - Fairfield Reserves game, which ended in a draw. The game will be re-played today. Caulfield and North gave nothing away in a tight opening in which the back lines of both sides were on top, and the scores were level at quartertime (2.2 each). North broke away for a couple of goals against the breeze early in the second term and looked like getting on top, but Caulfield fought back well, although they missed many opportunities through inaccurate kicking for goal. Caulfield took charge shortly before the interval, and kicked three quick goals to go to a 20-point lead, a handy advantage at the half-way mark. North were unable to break through effectively in the third quarter and added only 2.4 while Caulfield kicked two straight goals and led by 16 points at three-quarter-time. Caulfield kept the pressure on in the last term despite North's strong resistance, and went further away to run out winners by 37 points, and go into the Final next week. 'Kew jumped away to a 4-goal lead over Old Trinity in the first quarter but Trinity hit back to be only a goal down at half-time. Then Kew added 5.7 to 1.3 in the third quarter and held Trinity off in the last to score by a comfortable 33- point margin. Old Melburnians led Fairfield narrowly practically throughout, except where it really counted, and went down by 3 points in an exciting finish. They were 14 points ahead at quarter-time and three-quarter-time but Fairfield finished a little too strongly for them. Power House slammed on 10 goals in the opening term against Parkside to lead by 50 points at the first change ond it looked as if it was only a matter of how much they would win by. But Parkside fought back strongly and gradually reduced their leeway - to 31 points at the interval and 16 points at three-quarter-time, and then shot to the front shortly before the finish. 4 Power House still had a little in hand however and kicked 2 goals to win by 2 points. State Savings Bank beat LaTrobe Blacks by 11 points in a high-standard, high-scoring, see-saw game. LaTrobe led by 3 goals at quartertime but the Bank side kicked 7 goals in the second term to lead by 14 points at the interval. LaTrobe hit back with 8 goals in the third quarter and were 23 points up at the final change, but Bank were equal to the task and added another 7 goals in the last quarter to take the game. Marcellin offered little resistance to Alphington in a rather disappointing, one-sided game, and Alphington were not troubled to win by 15 goals. Poor shooting for goal robbed Elsternwick of their chance to beat AMP Society, who scored by 3 goals although they had seven less scoring shots. Elsternwick were a point in front at half-time but A.M.P. kicked 5 goals in the third term. Old Ivanhoe were in front throughout against Old Camberwell and were in a sound position at the interval, with a 34-point lead. It was a great third term with Camberwell kicking 7 goals and Ivanhoe 6, but Ivanhoe held on to their lead and won by 32 points. LaTrobe Reds were no match for St. Bede's who went to a 29-point lead at half-time and finished more than 9 goals in front. Fawkner had little difficulty in beating Monash Whites who were more than 10 goals behind at the finish. The first quarter was fairly even but after that it was all Fawkner. In the Junior Section games, Monash University beat North Old Boys by 19 points and Ormond were much too strong for University Blues, winning by 12 goals. Beverley Hills' straight kicking (13.4) gave them a 7-point win over Old Paradians and Coburg beat Parkside by more than 9 goals. Apart from the draw between Old Haileybury and Fairfield, most of the Reserve games were won by decisive margins, the only exceptions being St.. Kilda CBC's 7-point win over Parkside and St. Kevin's 8-point victory over Old Geelong. Power House, Alphington, Old Ivanhoe and Fawkner, and Coburg Juniors, winners of the second semi-finals in their respective sections last week, have gained promotion to a higher section next season. SNOW'S STORM Dunno wot 'appened to me story larst week and the week befour reckon George Mc- Taggart was sore on me gettin' me team inter the four, an' jest left it out. Wooden put it pas t 'im yer know. (No comment-ed.) Well, we did make the four, an' wot' s more we won the last 'ome-an-'omer by over 12 goals an' got up inter second possie. An' that's not all - no fear, not by a long shot - we won the seccund semi an' now were in the grand final - wacko! Gee, but the semi was a real nail-biter though, we's got in front with only about five minnits ter go, an' I thought we wus 'ome an 'osed. Then the dum clucks relaxed an' the other mob was quick to see it an' they got in front and then it was levvul peggin's and I thought it wus gunna be a draw. But me boys rise to the uccasion and "Johnno" kicked a goal an' naturally was the 'ero of the club. An' a course, I come in for a latter praise too, an' I'm the proudest man in Australia at present. Terday, I'll jest be lookin' on an' assessin' the form of the mob we'll come up against in the grand final. Tell you'se all about it next week mates! Page 4 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-September, 1, 1973

10 BALL BRIEFS 150 GAMES TO R.O.B.'s VICE-CAPTAIN - CLUB RECORD Congratulations to John "Spidge" Martin who reaches his 150 game milestone today with Reservoir Old Boys. John is the first Reservoir player to reach 150 games and naturally holds the club record for most games played. He has been with the club since its inception in 1965 and was a member of the premiership team of that year. A top class centreman and half-forward, John can adapt to any position as the situation arises for the benefit of the club, this typifies his unselfish attitude and desire to place the club's success above all else. His success has not come without effort and his dedication to hard training has been an inspiration to team mates. Consistently among the top vote pollers and twice the winner of the club's Best and Fairest award, he again appears certain to be among the top vote earners this year. A natural leader, John's enthusiasm and dedication has no equal. Off the field he has been a hard worker for the social club, and his efforts have ensured the success of the recent Presentation Nights. Once again, congratulations John from all at Reservoir and we are all looking forward to you reaching UP TO A PARKSIDE R Congratulations from all at Parkside to Peter (Jump the Fence in the Dark) Byrne on playing his 100th game last week. Earlier in the season Peter was struggling to secure a place in the side but his persistence has now paid off and he has become a regular member of our Reserves team. Well done Peter - ke@p up the good work and go on to the 200. Congratulations to David Wood on completing fifty games for Marcelliin last week. "Woodie" has played in many positions in our Reserves and his enthusiasm and dashing style make him a most useful player. 14 eeeeeeeeeseeeeeeeeeeeeeoeeeeeoeeeoeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeo e,. given it a way eh? by Mike Dunham "Given it away, eh? The question was asked by my companion of some years standing as he shrewdly eyed my sarsaparilla. "Feeling crook? " "No, it's a personal decision." "Won't be seeing you in here eh?" "Well, I'm here now aren't I? " "Yes, well you know what I mean, you won't be drinking that stuff all night," he said. He was quite right of course, I learned later. I couldn't include myself in the long drinking sessions on Friday evening, and over the week-end and it wasn't the sars either. The Blokes started off the same way with convivial chat, but as the time passed, I found the conversation growing louder and the laughter more raucous and I just couldn't see the funny side of their jokes which I realised had been repeated over and over again. So, I began to slip away, and on the way home I even bought a box of chocolates for my wife. "You're home early," said my wife. My small daughter screeched, "it's Daddy, it's Daddy," and two scruffy footballers came in from the garden with smiles on their faces. As I settled myself in an easy chair I was 'bombarded with statements and questions and stories of what "Sir" had said at school, and would I fix this broken doll, and "the Tigers are best, aren't they Dad?" i was wanted, it seemed. Yet this is what I said I couldn't face after a'herd-day's-work, I'd had to relax with a few beers with the boys. It happened quite slowly really and it wasn't till the fourth Friday night in a row that my wife said. "It's nice to have you home early these days, it makes the week-end so much longer," and the boys anticipating my early arrival had set up the chessmen. It was then that I realised that I was looking forward to it as much as they were. I don't get involved in chook raffles anymore but I don't think I ever came out in front with them anyway. One week, I did win three, but for the most part it would have been cheaper to buy one at the delicatessen. At the football, I don't drink and I don't miss the important incidents. Well, I'm $10 a week better off. I've lost weight. I like Monday morning a lot more. I'm facing up to difficulties, and I'm taking a real interest in things, especially at work. It's funny, I used to say that grog made no difference to me. I could take it or leave it, and all that rot about it _being manly to drink, why I've never felt better in my life. And I seem to find more time to do things - maybe it's because I want to do them. "Still off it then?' said my erstwhile drinking companion. "Still crook? " "Not on your life," I said, "never felt better. Must rush, I'm taking the boys to the football." 17 LOOKING BACK 5 Years Ago Only 3 points separated Caulfield Grammarians and Uni Blacks at half-time in the first semi. However in the third quarter Caulfield kicked 7.4 to take a good lead and hold off a determined finish by Blacks to win by 11 points and enter the prelim. final. Best were Atchison, Butcher (5 goals) and Clark for the victors and for Blacks Crouch, Pruden and Patterson starred. Norm Willoughby played his 150th game for Parkside in the 'D' Section first semi while Barry Saunders played his 150th game for the Blacks, a'first" for any Blacks player. Uni Blues rover Phil Moran won 'A' Section best and fairest with 25 points from Caulfield Gram. winger Alan Chaffey (20 points) while in 'B' Section David Hone (Monash) and Mick McKenzie (Old Xav.) tied on 18 points and could not be separated on a count-back. 25 Years Ago Best and fairest awards were as follows ; 'A' Section, Denis Cordner (University Blacks) 5, Sam Birtles (Hampton Rovers), Ted Cordner (Old Melb.), Kenith Gough (Old Scotch), Doug Heywood (Blacks) 3, and in 'B' Section John Kennedy ( Teachers College) 5, H. Lummas (Elst.) 4. Old Melburnians defeated Old Scotch by 10 points in the first semi played at Parkdale while in the second semi Uni Blacks, led by Denis Cordner, were too strong for Hampton Rovers, led by Doug Arnold. The Rovers were appearing in their first 'A' Section semi-final. In 'B' Section, Old Xaverians narrowly beat Balwyn to gain admission to 'A' Section and the right to play Brunswick in the grand final. Best for Old Xav's were Peter Murphy, Joe Barbaro and Ken Phelan. Geelong won the 'C' Section flag when they kicked 6.6 to Alphington's 1.1 in the first quarter. The 'Tons fought back and in a great last quarter kicked 5.1 to 1.2 but went down by 21 points. Fairfield beat Murrumbeena in 'D' Section and Ivanhoe won the Junior flag against old rivals Hampton Scouts. 10 Years Ago Collegians in their seventh successive final series appearance met Old Xaverians in 'A' Section first semi. The teams were captained by Brian Powell and John Sanders respectively. Old Xaverians got off to a great start leading 4.3 to 0.3 at quarter time. However Collegians then took over and ran out easy winners to Best for Collegians were R. Walduck, Daff and Johnson while Slattery, N. Gibson and Wardlaw kept Old Xav's in the game. In 'B' Section U.H.S.O.B. beat Coburg to go into the Grand Final while Geelong defeated De La Salle to go into the Prelim. final against Coburg. Denis Dalton (Old Paradians) won 'A' Section fairest and best with 27 points, while two Melbourne High players, "Jocka" Nelson and Ian Turnbull filled second and third places with 22 and 15 points. Bank), Brian Chettle (Preston) and John Adams (North Old Boys) won best and fairest awards in C, D and E Sections, while Coburg's Graham Warfe won the Junior Section trophy. Among other items of interest on this day "sincerest congratulations from all at St. Bernard's to hard working secretary Peter Nathan on his recent engagement". Caulfield Grammarians met St. Kilda CBC in the 'C' Section final to win the right to play Parkside in the grand final.
