2 MAP OF ALBERT PARK GRO UNDS Page 2 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-APRIL 26, 1975 ORMOND TURN TABLES ON BLACKS GOALS STRAIGHT IN THIRD TERM TRINITY'S BIG WIN IN TOP GRADE DEBUT By GEORGE McTAGGART Ormond avenged their 1974 Grand Final defeat when they scored a 29- point win over University Blacks in the opening round of the 1975 season last Saturday Ormond kicked eight goals straight in the third quarter and this was the turning point of the game Old Trinity, playing in A Section for the first time, made an impressive debut when they over-ran Geelong and chalked up a 70-point win University Blacks were only one of five of last year's premier teams to be defeated, the others being Marcellin, Brunswick, Reservoir Old Boys Reserves and Mentonians Reserves Thirty-four century scores were recorded last week, only three being in the Reserves Blacks and Ormond were locked in a keen struggle in the first half with Ormond leading by 4 points at the interval (5-7 to 4-9) The Blacks kicked 8 goals in the second half but Ormond's phenomenal accuracy in this period (13-1) earned them a sound win Trinity raced away from Geelong in the second quarter holding them to a single point, then kicked 7 goals in the third term to settle the issue Despite the strong breeze, there was never a great deal between St Bernard's and Coburg Coburg opened smartly but St Bernard's caught them, only to see Coburg slip away to a 4-goal lead Then St Bernard's got to within 15 points at the change Coburg had slightly the better of things for most of the second term and fought on well against the wind but their lead was cut to 5 points at the interval It was goal for goal in the third quarter and Coburg were in trouble with a lead of only 3 points at threequarter-time St Bernard's missed many chances in the final term but managed to score by 8 points Coburg's forwards were badly out of position for most of the second half, and this may well have cost them the game Reservoir Old Boys were on top of Old Paradians all day, and their fast, play-on paved, the, way for a big win Monash Blues trailed North Old Boys for three quarters but came home strongly with a 7-goal burst in the last term to win by 3 goals North lead by 28 points at the interval and looked to have a firm grip on the game University Blues beat Ivanhoe by 3 goals in a high-scoring encounter and Collegians, despite shocking kicking (8-23) pipped Kew by 2 points Old Scotch beat Old Carey by an even 10 goals, Caulfield Grammar scored a sound win over Old Haileybury and De La Salle crushed Marcellin Alphington beat Uni High by points, Melbourne High won by 23 points over Power House in a big-scoring game and St Kilda CBC had 1 5 THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER-APRIL 26, 1975 Page 3

3 points to spare over Old Ivanhoe, whose poor kicking contributed to their defeat Old Brighton beat Brunswick by 6 goals and Parkside went down to Old Melburnians by nearly 10 goals Fawkner overwhelmed Old Geelong, winning by just over 10 goals, after scoring by only a point in last year's Grand Final Other winners in D Section, Hampton Rovers, Old Xaverians, State Savings Bank and Assumption, all had plenty to spare over their respective opponents North Brunswick beat AMP Society by 15 points, St Bede's won by 13 points from ANZ Bank, with AJAX, LaTrobe Blacks and Elsternwick being the other winners Two of the new clubs, Bulleen United and Heatherton, opened up with wins over University Reds and Footscray Tech respectively, but Bulleen- Templestowe, playing their first game in the seniors, were well beaten by Beverley Hills Inaccuracy in front of goal marred the main Junior game, between Ormond and University Blues, which the Blues won by 2 goals (11-18 to 8-24) Coburg easily beat Monash University, Parkside crushed Power House and University Blacks won well over Ivanhoe In Section 2, new teams Old Carey and Reservoir Old Boys scored well from Hampton Rovers and Caulfield Grammar but Thomastown were well beaten by St Bernard's Bulleen- Templestowe beat Parade by 2 goals and West Brunswick had more than 6 goals to spare over Geelong In the Reserves, Reservoir went down to Parade by 21 points St Bernard's pipped Coburg by a point, Monash Blues beat North Old Boys by 3 goals, Parkside beat Old Melburnians by only a point while Power House and Melbourne High played a draw, each kicking 10-8 ELSTERNWICK PARK MATCHE S Matches to be played at Elsternwick Park for the remainder of the season are shown hereunder: April 26 - Ormond v Reservoir Old Boys May 3- Coburg v Old Paradians May 10 - Reservoir Old Boys v St Bernard's O C May 17 - Old Paradians v North Old Boy s *May 24 - Old Haileyburians v North Old Boys May 31 - Geelong v Ormond June 7 - University Blacks v Old Trinity Gramm *June 21 - Caulfield Gramm v Ivanho e June 28 - Old Trinity Gramm v Coburg July 5- North Old Boys v University Blacks July 12 - University Blacks v Geelong *July 19 - Old Carey Gramm v Caulfield Gramm July 26 - Old Trinity Gramm v St Bernard's O C August 2- Monash Blues v Old Trinity Gramm August 9 - Old Paradiaris v Ormon d August 16 - Ormond v University Blacks August 23 - Reservoir Old Boys v Coburg 11 Indicates B Section match ' Page 4 THE A MATEUR FOOTBALLER- APRIL 26, 1975 LAST WEEKIS A SECTION Reservoir Old Boys Old Paradians RESERVOIR OLD BOYS: T Byrne 5, R Shepherd 3, Crompton 3, Devlin 3, Dowell 2, Bates, J Paulka, G Tuininga, Dryden, S, Wilson Best: Bates, R Shepherd T Byrne, Dowell Dryden, Slater OLD PARADIANS : Clark 2, Duke 2, Johnson 2, Jordan 2, Roe 2 Best : Assetta, Tudor, Duke, Kendall, Johnson, Carroll St Bernard's Coburg ST BERNARD'S OC: Thompson 3, Wade 3, Slater 2, Drennan 2 Angel 2, K Phelan, M Mahoney Best: Doolan, Slater, M Mahoney, King, K Phelan, Angel COBURG: Green 3, King 3, A Handley 3, Finlay 2, Beattie 2, Callesen Best: M O'Brien, Cunningham, King, Beattie, A Handley, Zanon Monash Blues North OB MONASH BLUES : Moore 6, Golding 4, Booth 2, R B Anderson, Hargreaves, Olding, Alderton, Murray Best : Golding, Booth, Gumley, Sweetland, Hargreaves Moore NORTH OLD BOYS : Murray- 5, O'Connor 4, Robertson 2, Wilson, Sheales Best: Anderson, Borcich, Murray, Ferguson, O'Donnell, O'Connor Ormond University Blacks ORMOND: Alan Graham 4, Fisher 3, Ladd 3, J Smythe 3, Russ 2, Bourne, Anrep, Chisholm Best: Russ, Bourne, Buckley, Thomas, Alan Graham, Naylor UNIVERSITY BLACKS : Perrett 3, Webster 2, Johnson 2, Llewellyn 2, King, Clarke, Hays Best: S Costello, Holmes, Perrett, Burne, Pascoe, A Costello Old Trinity Gramm Geelong OLD TRINITY: Hansen 6, Fellows 3, Fekete 2, Dann 2, Weir 2, Peers, Watsford, Quarterman, Jones Best: Dann, Fletcher, Hansen, Johnston, Kennedy, Quarterman GEELONG: Tucker 2, Trevaskis 2, Allden, Lowcock, Bullen, Coad Best : Paulke, Trevaskis, Bullen, Davies, Davis, Lowcock RESULTS B S ECTION Caulfield Gramm Old Haileyburians CAULFIELD GRAMM : Griffiths 5, Tootell 4, Butcher 3, White 2, Waxman 2, Edney Best: Morphet, Griffiths, Waxman, Dickeson, Atchison, Clark OLD HAILEYBURY: Sincock 5, Bourls 2, Legge, Paul Best: Cracknell, Houston, Langford-Jones, Poole, Shapter, Sincock De La Salle OC Marcellin OC DE LA SALLE OC: H Halasa 5, Murnane 4, Pollard 2, M Bourke, P Mcllroy, Mc- Henry, Beddoe, Eddy Best: Lyons, Murnane, H Halasa, Wright, B Bourke, Dunn MARCELLIN OC : B Crimmins, Denning, C Mahon Best: Turci, C Mahon, Power, J Gartner Old Scotch Coll Old Carey Gram OLD SCOTCH : Morgan 7, Anderson 3, Moulds 2, Booth, Heggie, C Marks, J Marx, Tallent Best: Morgan, Molyneaux, Alder, J Marx, Tallent, Anderson OLD CAREY: Constable 3, R Cooke 2, M Cooke; 8 % UMPIRE'S By Kevin McKay ORN FIELD UMPIRIN G FITNESS - Training is a very important part of umpiring First thing to do is to get a positive mental attitude to training On nights when you don't feel like training which does happen on cold rainy nights In other words motivate yourself to train and to train hard - it pays When you have been appointed to umpire a game, pack your gear the night before and check it Make sure you leave home in plenty of time - less worry for you Get a positive mental approach by telling yourself -^you will go well" - also think about concentration POSITION - The most important thing You must know when to run (example : when a player has the ball and you know he is going to kick the ball that's when you run Not after he has kicked the ball ) You do not follow the flight of the ball for 10 metres then run out on the side, you must run straight out on the side of play at all times Make sure you move around at boundary throw-ins, don't stand in the one place Run in a diamond pattern and keep on the inside of play Give your decision and move into position do not stand and point When you blow the whistle blow it hard Talk to players, tell them what the free's are for, move into position keeping the man on the mark under control Never turn your back on the play, this is unforgiveable, turn when you get to the player who has got the ball, not the player on the mark Concentration alterness, fitness, Common sense, are all part of being a good umpire 15 metres penalty is not to be used as a lever of control, it is for deliberately and wilfully wasting time Above all - enjoy umpiring - if it becomes a burden to you, you will never umpire well P,age 14 "GOAL UMPIRING" Goal umpires must be alert and concen- trate on the game at all times POSITION Always endeavour to keep the ball in front of you, it can be disastrous if you have to turn your head to follow the flight of the ball, it is easy to I ose sight of it Give your decision from behind the line, not on the playing arena Be up on the goal line when giving your decisions, because it is where the ball is when it crosses the line that is important, not where it is when it is three or four feet over, the line; also if you get into the habit of working back from the line, occas- ionally the ball will drop short and you will be caught out of position Perhaps the only exception to the above advice is when a player is having a shot from dead in front at point blank range, a difficult one for the goal umpire, then you may drop back and take advantage of the extra three or four feet that maybe available Always be ready to move across quickly for wild shots that come in near the behind posts, make every endeavour to get right icross to, the post and look for co-operation from your boundary umpire Whenever the ball crosses the line for a score, look first to your field umpire for an "all clear" before you commit yourself to a decision, he may have given a free kick At all times keep the forward and half forward lines under surveillance, however don't get into the habit of constantly running on to the arena, unless you intend to report a player Don't leave your goals if play is in the vicinity, you may even have to wait till the next interval before you can speak to the player concerned Look smart in your appearance and move smartly at all times, and remember you are one of a team who have been appointed to control the game THE BLACK LIST Missed publication dead-line (5 p m, Seniors and Juniors, 3 pm Reserves) - Fine THREE DOLLARS POWER HOUSE RESERVES Missed phoning scores to Herald before 530 pm Fine - SIX DOL- LARS ELSTERNWICK ELSTERNWICK RESERVES Failed to phone scores or detail s to Press Correspondent before 7 p m Fine - SIX DOLLARS OLD HAILEYBURIANS ELSTERNWICK ELSTERNWICK RESERVES RESULTS OF MATCHE S Results of amateur matches are broadcast in the Sporting Sessions of Radio Stations 3LO, (commencing at 620 p m), 3DB and 3KZ (included in 7 p m News) each Saturday evening and from Television Channels ABV-2 and HSV 7 Channel 2 also provides quarter-by-quarter scores of A Section matches' each Saturday afternoon THE AMATEUR FOOTBALLER- APRIL 26, 1975 On ground of first named Club at 2 p m Reserves at a m Likely winners of Senior and Junior matches in Bold Type Umpire for Reserves shown in brackets A SECTION Ormond v Reservoir OB (at Elsternwick Park) - Goodman Goal : Cust, Peters (Sutherland) Coburg v Old Trinity Gramm - Rowe Goal : E Jenner, K Jenner (Minson) North Old Boys v St Bernard's OC - Wills Goal : MeCusker, Murray (Wood) Old Paradians v University Blacks - Rowell Goal : Allen, Wilson (Blair-Holt) -Geelong v Monash Blues - Jorgensen (A Williams) Goal umpires from Geelong District League B SECTION Kew v Old Haileyburians - Cordner Goal : Ahlm, Box (Jenkin) De La Salle OC v Ivanhoe - Hill Goal : Dunstan, Hillier (Thomas) Old Carey Gramm v Marcellin OC - Hindle Goal: D McKenzie Paizis (Maebus) Caulfield Gramm v Collegians - B Nicholls Goal : Bridges, Smith (Lowe) University Blues v Old Scotch Coll - Simpson Goal: Stratton, L Williams (Tracey) C SECTIO N Old Ivanhoe Gramm k v Power House - Dodds (Burridge) Alphington v Brunswick - J Field (Cunneen) Parkside v UH S Old Boys - Bishop (Amor) M H S Old Boys v St Kilda CBOC - Mc- Taggart (Mead) Old Brighton Gramm v Old Melburniar,s - Dressing (Conway) D SECTION - Old Camberwell Gramm v Fawkner - C Nichol (Cavanagh) National Bank v Assumption OC - Fogarty (Borci) St Kevin's OB v Hampton Rovers - Marks (Holst) Old Geelong v State Sav Bank - Phillips (Muller) C'wealth Bank v Old Xaverians - Pritchett (Shelton) E SECTIO N West Brunswick v North Brunswick - P Fell (Ray) AJ A X v Elsternwick - McMahon (White) St Bede's OC v St Pat's-Monivae OC - King (Collister) A M P Society v La Trobe Blacks, - Sommerville (Stead) Old Mentonians v A N Z Bank - Budge (Myors) F SECTION Footscray IT v Bulleen United - Botsford (Grace ) Bulleen-Templestowe v Glenroy - Kelly (Glenroy Reserves a bye ) Thornbury v Beverley Hills - Andrews (Gannon) University Reds v Heatherton - Reilly (G Murray) La Trobe Reds v Monash Whites - Wakefield (Booth) JUNIOR SECTION 1 Ivanhoe v Coburg - Johnston Power House v Ormond - Power Monash University v University Blacks Cogdon University Blues v Old Scotch Coll - Paddy Parkside a bye JUNIOR SECTION 2 North Old Boys v Buileen-Temples'owe - Mason Old Paradians v West Brunswick - Marsden Hampton Rovers v St Bernard's OC - Jennings Geelong v Caulfield Gramm - Gow Thomastown v Old Carey Grani m - Sharpe Reservoir Old Boys a bye EMERGENCY UMPIRES : George, Halbish;
