3 St. Bernard's beat Ormond, take top spot Three bottom sides in upset wins Old Brighton, Hampton Rovers lose places By GEORGE McTAGGART A slashing first quarter effort by St. Bernard's, in which they cut the Ormond defence to pieces, enabled them to score a 2-goal win and edge Ormond out of top place on the list (by four-tenths of one per cent). The three bottom teams, Ivanhoe, Monash Blues and Old Paradians caused upsets - Parade beat North Old Boys (third), Monash beat Coburg (fifth) and Ivanhoe beat University Blues (sixth). Defeats to Old Brighton and Hampton Rovers cost them places in their respective fours, allowing Fairfield and LaTrobe Blacks to come in and contest the finals. There were no other alterations to the final fours, even in the placings, except Ormond's loss of top place to St. Bernard's, already mentioned. The fifty six contenders for premiership honours will be reduced by 14 today, when the losers of the first Semi-finals will retire from the competition until next season. St. Bernard's really caught Ormond napping in the first quarter, kicking 8-9 and holding Ormond scoreless. It was a most "un-ormond like" performance by the leaders. who looked a ragged, second-rate side at this stage. They fumbled, missed marks, lost the run of the ball, allowed their opponents to roam around unattended, and just generally couldn't do anything right. They showed little improvement in the second quarter, when they were able to pick up only 13 points with the assistance of the breeze and were 44 points behind at the interval. Ormond hopped out in the third term and kicked 3 goals in what looked like being a grand recovery, but St.. Bernard's then steadied and kicked three to be 45 points in front at the final change. Ormond made a great effort to make up their leeway in the last term, when they kicked 5-5 and held St. Bernard's to 2 points, but they couldn't quite make it and went down by 2 goals. Monash Blues also came home in fine style against Coburg and they DID make it. They trailed Coburg by a couple of goals or so for three quarters but kicked 5-2 to 3 points in the last and won by 17 points. A burst of 6 goals in the second quarter gave Old Paradians a 19-point advantage over North Old Boys at the interval and they held North off to win a low-scoring game by 8 points. This win saved Parade from relegation, as Monash would have headed them on percentage. Ivanhoe went further ahead of University Blues each quarter and finished 34 points in front, while Caulfield Grammarians made sure of holding their place in the four with a 10-goal win over Geelong. 4 Collegians ended their slump with a 39-point win over Old Scotch and Reservoir Old Boys had a comfortable win of 25 points against University Blacks. De La Salle, who troubled and toppled some of the leading teams in recent matches, were well beaten b y Kew, who held their place in the four. Old Carey easily beat Melbourne High and Old Trinity were not troubled by Assumption. Parkside beat Power House by 3 points, Fairfield won by 9 points from Old Melburnians to knock Old Brighton (who went down to National Bank by 7 points) out of the four. Uni. High saved their place in the section with a 22-point win over Old Xaverians and St. Kilda CBC beat Old Haileybury by 15 points. Brunswick surprised State Savings Bank, defeating them by 14 points, and Old Geelong beat LaTrobe'Blacks by the same margin. But LaTrobe sneaked into the four despite their loss, as Hampton Rovers were swamped by Alphington an d dropped out. Commonwealth Bank drew with St. Pat's, and saved themselves from going down. Elsternwick scored a 2-point win over AJAX and Footscray Tech. beat West Brunswick by a goal. AMP Society easily beat ANZ Bank and Old Camberwell thrashed Glenhuntly. Thornbury scored a surprise win over Monash Whites, the margin being 29 points, and University Reds ran Fawkner to 7 points. Had they kicked straighter (5-15 to Fawkner's 7-10) they may have won it. LaTrobe Reds and St. Bede's won their games against North Brunswick and Old Mentonians respectively. Main interest in the Junior games was Beverley Hill's 15-point win over the leaders, Coburg, who had only been beaten once previously. In the Reserves, Ormond beat St. Bernard's by 25 points, Reservoir beat the Blacks by 5 goals, St. Kilda CBC beat Old Haileybury by 26 points, Marcellin beat St. Kevin's by 15 points in a low scoring struggle (4-5 to 2-2). ANZ beat AMP by 5 goals, Old Camberwell beat Glenhuntly by 13 points to hold their place in' the four and although St. Bede's downed Old Mentonians by 22 points, they were unable to displace them from the four. Only one team went through the home-and-home round unbeaten. That was Ormond Reserves, who however, had to be content with a draw with Caulfield Grammarians. 19 given seeo :e eooeeeeoeeeooeaeooeoooooooesooeseooeeeeeaoee o~,.s it yeh by Mike Dunham "Given it away, eh? The question was asked by my companion of some years standing as he shrewdly eyed my sarsaparilla. "Feeling crook? " No, it's a personal decision." "Won't be seeing you in here eh?" "Well, I'm here now aren't I? " "Yes, well you know what I mean, you won't be drinking that stuff all night," he said. He was quite right of course, I learned later. I couldn't include myself in the long drinking sessions on Friday evening, and over the week-end and it wasn't the sars either. The Blokes started off the same way with convivial chat, but as the time passed, I found the conversation growing louder and the laughter more raucous and I just couldn't see the funny side of their jokes which I realised had been repeated over and over again. So, I began to slip away, and on the way home I even bought a box of chocolates for my wife. "You're home early," said my wife. My small daughter screeched, "It's Daddy, it's Daddy," and two scruffy footballers came in from the garden with smiles on their faces. As I settled myself in an easy chair I was bombarded with statements and questions and stories of what "Sir" had said at school, and would i fix this broken doll, and "the Tig_=rs are best, aren't they Dad?" I was wanted, it seemed. Yet this is what I said I couldn't face after a 'hard-day's-work, I'd had to relax with a few beers with the boys. It happened quite slowly really and it wasn't till the fourth Friday night in a row that my wife said. "It's nice to have you home early these days, it makes the week-end so much longer," and the boys anticipating my early arrival had set up the chessmen. It was then that I realised that I was looking forward to it as much as they were. I don't get involved in chook raffles anymore but I don't think I ever came out in front with them anyway. One week, I did win three, but for the most part it would have been cheaper to buy one at the delicatessen. At the football, I don't drink and I don't miss the important incidents. Well, I'm $10 a week better off. I've lost weight. I like Monday morning a lot more. I'm facing up to difficulties, and I'm taking a real interest in things, especially at work. It's funny, I used to say that grog made no difference to me. I could take it or leave it, and all that rot about it being manly to drink, why I've never felt better in my life. And I seem to find more time to do things - maybe it's because I want to do them. "Still off it then?' said my erstwhile drinking companion. "Still crook? " "Not on your life," I said, "never felt better. Must rush, I'm taking the boys to the feetball." 20 BALL BRIEFS TREBLE FOR MONASH WHITES Three players reach milestones with Monash Whites today. Wayne Smith, playing his 100th game, began with the Blues before joining the Whites in Last year, Wayne captained the Senior side before leaving for overseas mid-season. His rugged and vigorous play has been an inspiration to all fellow players. Neil Hewson and Bruce Halliday have both reached 50 games. Neil's career began with Old Scotch Juniors, followed by Blue's Reserves, before joining the Whites in 1971 and he has actually played over 90 Amateur games. "Ankles", so named for his perpetual injury, is having his best season, holding down full-back in the Seniors. His strong marking and clearing dashes have proved a real headache for all opposition full-forwards. Neil was also a member of last year's Whites Reserves Premiership side. Bruce's career began with Monash Juniors and he joined the Whites in "Big Bruce", 6' 7", has been a dominating force at the centre bounce and around the ground. In his first season, last year, Bruce not only won the club's best and fairest but was also runner-up in the V.A.F.A. voting. All at Monash extend congratulations to these three players and wish them all the best in today's Semi's. Congratulations to Power House centreman, nick Hadjigerorgiou who plays his 50th game with the club today. A former captain of the juniors, Nick is a great inspiration to his team-mates with his determination and rugged play. His strength and ball getting ability will undoubtedly play a vital part in our quest for B Grade in Congratulations for today Nick and we hope you play many more fine games with Power House. Brunswick congratulates Russell Abernathy on winning the club's Best and Fairest and to Reg Johnson on being runner up in his first year with the club, also to Arthur Barnett for winning the Reserves Best and Fairest from Ray Gillett. 100 UP TO O.G.G.'s DEFENDER O.G.G.'s player Peter Reid has timed it well - his 100th game comes up this Saturday in the Reserves finals. Peter joined the club in 1966 and was a member of the premiership team of that year - a most reliable backline player. Since then, despite missing a couple of seasons, he has given great service to the firsts and more recently to the Reserves. Congratulations Peter, and let's hope that 1973 might also go down as a premiership team for you. CENTURY TO FAIRFIELD MAN Congratulations from all at Fairfield to Terry Richardson who plays his 100th game in the semi-final against Old- Melburnians today. A great player and clubman, we have no doubts that Terry will rise to the occasion with another great game today. TRIBUNAL (August I1th Round) C.
