3 PREVIEiIV112"IG TODAY'S GAIMNIE S A SECTIO N Ormond and Marcellin clash in the "match of the day' 'at Elsternwick Park today in a game that promises to be as good a contest as we have seen this year Power and Gartner have been in fine form for Marcellin while Naylor is!giving Ormond ~areat drive from the centre bounce Marcellin have some brilliant players but,the side then tends to taper off It's a toss ;up :but I fancy Ormond by a hand-full of points Wooden-spoon "honours" are at stake when the lowly Old Trinity and Coburg meet at Richmond Both are team building but Trinity appear the less 'depleted and should take the points North Old Boys look an excellent chance for,two flags in a+row and will maintain their, unbeaten record in accounting for University Blacks but 'Blacks boast considerable talent and if North don't get on top early there could be a surprise Caulfield Grammarians are still in sight of the four and will not be troubled by University 'Blues who have disappointed to d& te Mike Sleeman and Simon Trumble are relied on too heavily out at the 'Varsity and their influence will not be sufficient to counter a determined Caulfield who will be smarting from last weeks lapse A poser with St Bernard's and De La Salle A 'spasmodically brilliant St Bernard's on Paper should win well But De La Salle are a most even line-up with few stars and every player doing his share They however, do not appear to be playing as well as last year I will not too confidently stick with St Bernard's but I expect little in it at the final siren SELECTIONS : Ormond, North Old Boys, Old Trinity, Caulfield Grammarians, St Bernards - JIM FIDGE B SECTIO N It was good to see Collegians break the ice, thereby making a difficult job im,oossible Flushed with success, Old Melburnians meet Reservoir O B, and will know they have played a game of football However they should have too much aerial ability for Reservoir, whose main avenue to goal appears to be :Ray Shepherd and Tom Byrne in the roving diin sion Geelong put a very ordinary effort last week and do not ~inspire much confidence for their clash with Monash Blues for whom Chris Moore is really firing ~on the forward line Old Scotch, with captain John Anderson back in form, look to be too Powerful for the improving Collegians, however the Cardinals will need to keep :their minds on the job to notch the four points St Kilda C B C and Old Haileyburians, both last round losers, look fairly evenly matched for their clash at North Rd Halleybury icould well control the marking duels and sneak away with the tpoints Ivanhoe, where the Stewart brothers and Charlie Stredwick, appear to be carrying the side week after week, do not appeu~, to have, the even spread of strength and experience so necessary to tackle Old Paradlans with any real chance of ta win The OP's look sure to remain at the head of the list SELECTIONS: Old Melburnians, Monash Blues, Old Scotch, Old Haileyburians, Old Paradians - ALF KEAM C SECTION I'm writing these selections In a queue at Tullamarine - so here goes Good work Old Carey in opening up your score - if MHS could crack it we would see some more interest in the lower half of the ladder Glamour side Old Xav's - just fell in against AJAX - ;it was a+great contest A tip from an old bloke Xav's - don't get too complacent with your wins as you have some good -sides 'breathing down your neck Today Old Xav's meet Carey at home and should add another 4 points Parkside a final four prospect will find difficulties with Kew's ground - but, on form should take out the game AJAX are a good side - although a loss last Saturday it was a great performance and 1+tip them to improve even more At home to UHSOB I select them to will, Fawkner Playing well will be 'too strong for MHSOB, I can't go past them for the 4 points Old Geelong have been a disappointment so far this year and this week they will i ake another battering from Old Camberwell The remaining match of the day will be St Kevin's against State Bank St Kevin's have been up and down so far whereas S tate Bank seem to be settling down and concentrating on the game - State Bank to Will SELECTIONS : told Brighton, Alphington, Elsternwick, Old Camberwell, State Bank - KEITH FINDLAY E SECTIO N Old Mentonians at home to North Brunswick should be good enough but North have a habit of doing the unexpected, including me West Brunswick have another home match against the oldest club in the section, Brunswick, their neighbors from `Dunstan Reserve, and should register a comfortable win Heatherton are to entertain Beverley Hills and the winner will be a place in front on the ladder I fancy the fallacy and therefore select Heatherton ANZ Bank and National Bank should provide a closer match than either side enjoyed last week ANZ should win their second game SELECTIONS :- Old Mentonians, West Brunswick, Heatherton and ANZ Bank - SYD WHITFIELD La Trobe have little to recommend them +Bulleen United's performances reveal a stronger forward and back line than those of the visitors United should have an easy win SELECTIONS :- Bulleen - Templestowe, Glenroy, Footscray I T, Thornbury, Bulleen United - NORM NUGENT JUNIOR SECTION I The Coburg-Ivanhoe match is destined to be a very one-sided affair as the Coburg boys obviously did not take heart in their fine effort against Monash University two weeks ago and plummeted back to the depths of despair against the inconsistent University Blacks last week If the Ivanhoe boys keep a level head and utilise their very good team play to its greatest extent they will will by a huge score Monash University are tapering off a little at this stage of the season and will not find University Blacks an easy team to shrug off Monash will win, but not by a big margin Even though they have only one win each Old Scotch and Ormond should turn on a real thriller Both have displayed real promise at various stages of the season, in particular Old Scotch The Ormond boys will have to work hard on their game to counter Old Scotch's team work which is improving each week :I think Old Scotch will win F SECTION Another difficult game to forecast an accurate result is this, 'one between North Once again performances last Saturday served to further divide the ten sides on Old Boys and St Bernard's The greater the premiership ladder consistency and application to :their game Commonwealth Bank and Bulleen-Templestowe play the main game by the 'North Boys will enable ~them to 'overpower today According 5t Bernard's and register a comfortable win to my records the Bankers are enjoying their best ~ season since 1969 when they won SELECTIONS - 'Ivanhoe, Monash Universiiy, Old Scotch, North Old Boys - CLIFF C 'Section Bulleen-Templestowe have not put :a foot wrong this season BASTOW The big Old Ivanhoe and 'Hampton Rovers, on Harry Trott oval will allow them to develop JUNIOR SECTION 2 equal points, set me today's poser Although their play-on game, provided no local squalls Success at last, and how sweet it is!! blow at home, I think Old I's will find Hampton Off 'the lake I However, now another week is upon us like Bulleen Templestowe despite in full flight and :they look the better side the 'Banker's strength and your scribe must try to repeat the performance, with the most difficult round My Selections:- Parkside, Old From the main game at Albert Park, Xaverlans, that Hampton Rovers, AJAX, Fawkner at Prince's Park will see the bottom two of the season to date sides struggling I hope Graeme is doing the writing next ;to avoid the wooden spoon Undefeated Hampton Rovers play host to week - ALEX JOHNSON Glenroy have scored more than have University Reds Forwards win games so I the other undefeated side De La Salle The home side have been showing brilliant form, select Glenroy while "De La" will be "raring to go" after D SECTIO N Footscray I T smartin g winning on a forfeit last week from two successive losses make the long journey south light of the match should be both sidct The high- Alphington won well last week and are now clear leaders by two games followed to Mentone Awaiting them will endeavouring to get the ball to their rispective forwards in James and Stewart I be the disappointing footballers from St Bede's by Old B righton, State Bank, ~Camberwell and Assumption all struggling to stay in Home ground advantage on have quoted "De la" as favourites for the the sandy the four However some of the teams are Beda oval should assist St ibede's flag and must sticd, with them However now settling down which gives some heart on their inconsistent performances to date Caulfield Grammarians are at home to to a struggling tipster (four winners last I can't see them defeating Geelcng and both sides have won three and the Footscrary week) - (That's more like the form of students lost two This will be >a very close game 1976 Top Tipster - Ed ) Thornbu ry will be all and my selection is Caulfield out to preserve their Assumption meet Old Brighton at Brighton, claim to second place when they meet There is every possibility this could be although the home side did not perform Monash Whites who crashed last week the week for Kew to 'break through against well last week I still think that on their hornbury will M be HS O 'too strong and B, even though it is an away too talenthome ground they will be ~too strong for Td for the 'boys game for them from the "Clayton Farm" They put in a particularly the visitors and should have another big win good performance against Reservoir last Alphington will have no troubles in disposing of bottom of the ladder Power House tain their high rating when La Trobe Reds, Bulleen United will be anxious week The spirit at High must be low to main- after their forfeit last week, but I am The same applies to Elsternwick when they flushed with success, are sticking with them, probably because Alphington got up and won after a forfeit ;their opponents meet LaTrobe Blacks at LaTrobe today Apart from 'last week's success I couple a of Page 4 Page 5

4 West Brunswick visit Aiphington and supporters can expect to see a hard game, with West coming out on top Old Paradians 'suffered from bad kicking last week and today visit Reservoir Old Boys The Reservoir back line will not give Paradians as many opportunities as they had last week and will drive the ball forward often enough for their side to win SELECTIONS: De La Salle, Caulfield Grammarians ~1VLIIS Old Boys, West Brunswick, Reservoir Old Boys - PETER NATHAN 200 GAMES TO UNI HIGH "VETERAN " All players and officials would like to congratulate Lee "Moose" Thomas on reaching 200 games with Uni High Lee started with the club in 1962, missing 2 years since then working in New Zealand, as an architect He has been a committeeman on numerous occasions, had the privilege of bein g awarded Best Clubman, and was awarded Best and Fairest player in the 2nd 18 last year Lee also had the honour to be in Uni Highs last permiership side in 1970 His achievements have been deserved because he is a very enthusiastic player and supporter So from all at Uni High, Lee congratulations for a job well done Caulfield Grammarians thanks go to C A "Bill" Tootell for another of his generous don&tions to the club, this time in the form of several lengths of slotted rods which when assembled will help retrieve footballs kicked into almost inaccessible positions in the pine trees around our Home Ground No 3 Oval, Albert Park "Bill" and brother Tom played for the club in the 'thirties, whilst Bill's three sons John and Tom both over the 150 games mark and Greg now over 200 games and still going strong have since kept the family name well to the fore in the VA F A competitions What a record and what a fine example of loyalty and service as club members The body fitting guernsey that can't be caught! (b) When the ball is caught!without being touched from a kick and has travelled less than 10 metres ; (c) When a player elects to play on after taking a mark ; an d (d) When a player having taken a mark attempts to bring the ball into play by running, kicking or handballing the ball in any ~direction other than over his mark Any player who "faints" ia handpass or other- %vise makes an iarm movement to handball the ball, other than in the direction of his mark, and ithen decides to withhold the ball is regarded as attempting to bring the (ball into play Umpires are continually under the microscope of criticism and -in the majority of instances destructive criticism can result from an umpire making an instant decision which in his opinion would be advantageous to the team offended against His best intentions can go astray through no fault of his Umpiring is =a reflex action and every decision Must be done 'on the `spur of the moment' The vast majority of his decisions are correct and bring no comment or criticism Umpires are only human and this fact is often forgotten GET GOAL-KICKERS RIGHT Press Correspondents are reminded that Goal-kickers for the match MUST be shown in order '- highest number of goals first, eg SMITH 5, ROBINSON 4, JONES 4,,CARTER 3, BROWN 2, McDONALD, MAXWELL, etc - NOT -BROWN 2, MAXWELL 1, ROBINSON 4, McDONALD 1, SMITH 5, CARTER 3, ROBINSON 4 Which is similar to the list of goalkickers submitted by one club this week IT WAS NOT ACCEPTED It is essential also that CORRECT FORMS, (which were handed out just prior to the commencement of the season), be used, not odd sized scraps of paper CHECK YOUR TEAM LIST Club Secretaries, Press Correspondents and Team Managers are requested to check their Club's Team List as appearing in The Amateur Footballer, and if there are any inaccuracies, please submit a COMPLETE NEW LIST, on the PROPER FORM as supplied at the beginning of the season, by next Monday, MAY 23rd, to be included in the JUNE 4th issue Make sure your Captain and Vice- Captain are included Secretaries and Press Correspondents are particularly requested to note that the Week-by-Week corrections to Team Lists (except for A Section) have been discontinued 150 UP TO HAMPTON VETERAN Hampton Rovers congratulate Ron Tregea r on playing his 150th game for the club against Fawkner last Saturday and as usual he was one of our best players Ron started his football with our juniors and quickly received -promotion to the firsts when the club realised his potential A fine mark and a long kick 'Tregga' has played in almost every position and at present is having his best year to date Keep, up the good work Ron and we look forward to many more games from a great clubman Page 10 Rage 11
