2 U16 Football Championship report Valley Rovers 2-16 Castlelyons 1-6 Valley Rovers under 16 footballers followed their victory over St Colmans the previous week with a well-deserved win over Castlelyons in Whitechurch last Monday evening, thereby qualifying for the final of the East A championship. The match was not as one-sided as the winning margin would suggest. Castlelyons got the opening score and had their fair share of possession in the opening quarter, but did not capitalise enough on their chances. When Robert-Sean Sweetnam put the ball in the net, that started a good period for Valley Rovers and they finished the first half with a seven-point lead, 1-6 to 0-2. Rovers had the better of the opening exchanges in the second period, extending the lead by a few more points. However, when Castlelyons scored a goal from a penalty mid-way through the half, followed quickly by two points, this brought them back to within five points, so the game was all to play for. But that s when Rovers broke loose and a in great last quarter they scored 1-7 against their opponents 0-2, with the outstanding Patrick Hurley contributing 1-4 of this. This was another excellent team performance from the Rovers lads from goalkeeper, Cian O Donovan, who pulled off some first-class saves, right through the team, including the subs who contributed their part. 3 Valley Rovers held a very successful Sponsored Walk and Fun Day on Sunday September at the Bleach, Innishannon. Fun and games was had by all including sponge throwing at mentors of each age group. The large crowd that attended highlighted the strength of the juvenile club. This is the only specific fund-raising event being held by the Valley Rovers Juvenile Club this year, andthe Juvenile Club would like to thank everyone for their fantastic support. Golden Goal Winner Congratulations to James Murphy from Goggins Hill who won the 500 Euro prize in the golden goal competition. The winning ticket was bought in the Crossbarry Inn. The Ladies Football and Camogie Clubs would like to thank all those who supported this fundraiser, especially the people who bought and sold scratchcards. Over 5800 euros was raised by the clubs. 4 Camogie Report Senior B Ch'ship Semi Final Clonakilty 3-7 Valley Rovers 2-8 Valley Rovers bowed out of Ch'ship when Clonakilty defeated them by 2 points in a game played in Bandon on Sunday. The first half was very even with Katie Lynch accurate from placed balls for Valleys. OrlaDeasy scored Valleys first goal after receiving a long delivery from Katie Richardson and make no mistake hand passing the ball to the net. Eimear O Regan also pointed from play. Valleys led at the interval 1-5 to 1-4. Clon started the second half with two early goals and lead from there to the final whistle. Valleys tried hard and were unfortunate not to score two late goals. OrlaDeasy scored Valleys second half goal with points coming from Lisa Lynch and Maryanne Hawkes. U16 South East League Courcey Rovers 5-6 Valley Rovers 1-6 Valleys and Courceys played in U16 league in Ballinspittle on Sunday evening. As Courceys only had 13 players both teams played with out a full forward and full back. Courceys had the better scoring forwards and scored some fine goals. The girls performed heroically to beat Sliabhrua and Bishopstown in the group stage and while they lost to a strong Tracton team they did enough to reach the semi-final of the shield. They met a strong St Finbarrsteam( winners of the cup the previous year) and played outstandingly well and we very unlucky not to go through to the final, loosing narrowly by the 1 goal. Well done to all the girls who did themselves and the jersey proud and these girls are the feature photo on page one of the Newsletter this week.
