A Busy Week in Stable Yard In our penultimate week of term, the children have continued to work at 110 miles an hour. With the postponed World Book Day looming, the children have been busy practising their extracts once again. Dr hall and Mrs Rice brought along Year 5 to hear the children who had made it to the second round. Well done, to Amelia Drake, Jeremy Sibun, Noah Gillott, Ruby Cornish and Joseph McGrath from Year 3 and Helena Pascalides, Oscar Wright, George Romer-Lee, Rory Hargreaves, Matteo Barberini, Isabelle Baudains, Albie Mann and Bertie Mayhew for reading their extracts so brilliantly. It was clear how hard the children had worked to polish up their performances and it was a very difficult choice for the judges. The eventual winners were Amelia Drake and Jeremy Sibun from Year 3, Rory Hargreave and George Romer-Lee from 4NP and Albie Mann and Oscar Wright from 4SG. All these children received Pluses for their hard work and also were lucky enough to be treated to an edible Plus from Dr. hall. We look forward to hearing their performances again in our World Book Day assembly next Thursday. Many thanks to Mrs Rice and Dr. hall for taking the time to come and listen. A reminder that all the children will be expected to dust off their World Book Day costumes and wear them into school on Thursday 22 nd March. We look forward to seeing everyone s brilliant efforts. That same afternoon, the children will all be taking part in our annual Fun Run and this year we are raising money for Water Aid and Daisy. Please use the time over the home weekend to rustle up plenty of sponsorship. It is going to be a busy day! Thank you for all for taking the time to meet with your child s class teacher in our recent parent meetings. You will have seen first hand the excellent work that is taking place and the children s exercise books are brimming with excellent examples of dedication and hard work. You should all be very proud of your children. With just one week remaining of the Lent term, it promises to be a busy run up to the Easter holidays. Mrs Warren, Mr Gillott and Mr Pascalides

The Friends: Quiz Night On Friday night the Britten Hall was buzzing with fifteen teams of excited quizzers for the ultimate honour of being the winners of the annual Friends of OBH Quiz Night. There was much cheering when answers were correct and much sighing when they were not! Music, sport, history, art, science, television and nature rounds and some fiendishly difficult anagrams tested the brains of the OBH parents and staff, but for the third time the eventual winners were the staff team! Everyone enjoyed delicious curries and brownies. Thank you to everyone who helped and supported us on the evening 2092 was raised, which will go towards the continued refurbishment of Rory s Place. Friends of OBH: Lunch Invitation

In Vain Oliver Stanton The wind howled, a starving wolf, feral and crazed, before abruptly falling silent. The brooding clouds that had dominated the horizon, casting the land into shadow and obscuring the sky like a dark hood, gradually slipped away. Beautiful golden rays of sunlight speared from the heavens, piercing the treetop canopy and bathing the world in dazzling gold. The sky was a blue ocean, islands of cloud floating along thoughtlessly. Twigs crunched underfoot with a satisfying crack. Out of my peripheral vision, I noticed a red streak dart from behind a tree. I swung my gaze, but the red had faded into the dull browns and greens of the forest. A twig snapped, ringing through the wood. Whatever caused it had already ghosted away, slipping through the wood like a wraith. Again the red streak slipped through the treeline at the edge of my vision. As before, it was too fast for me. Then the fox emerged from the undergrowth. Feet clad in dark socks. Its beautiful coat silky and smooth, shining radiantly. The tail swished back and forth, long, elegant; amber red fur fading into deep inky black. The long snout quivered, scenting, testing the air for the slightest threat. The fox cautiously creeped forward, tense and wary for the slightest danger, before stopping right before my feet and slowly dropping to a seating position. Its eyes glimmered like dazzling emeralds, glowing in the brilliant light. And in those beautiful eyes, there was a sparkle of intelligence staring into mine, seeing right through me into the deepest depths of my soul. Again, our eyes met, and a glimmer of understanding passed between us. It was just a look, just a brief moment, and yet it meant more to me than I could explain in a thousand words, a thousand pages, a thousand years of spilling my heart out onto the page. In that second, I felt like we were blood brothers, connected in ways beyond my wildest imagining. I stared into those brilliant eyes, beautiful green gems, rippling with life like an ocean of feelings and thoughts I could never begin or hope to comprehend. I saw compassion, beauty, determination, tenderness, love and much more. Then, without warning, the fox turned and disappeared into the dense forest. I watched it go, my heart yearning and calling out for it to stay. The fox never even looked back. In that moment, a part of me was torn out and thrown into the abyss, never to be found again. Every day, in summer, winter, rain, sun, storm or flood I search for that fox. Calling for it with all my might, weeping for my loss and voicing my misery to the four corners of the Earth. All in vain.

Year 8 Science Trip to Birmingham NEC On Thursday March 15 th the Year 8s set out for the NEC in Birmingham to visit the Big Bang Fair. This is a huge STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) event which is visited by schools from across the country. The outward journey was tedious in the extreme, with a variety of hold-ups on the A14, but this was soon forgotten as the children enjoyed the novelty of a bus ride from the car park to the exhibition centre. Once inside, we all watched an interesting STEM presentation on one of the big stages before the children separated into their groups to visit a large variety of shows and demonstrations. These included building robots, learning about the use of technology in the armed forces, Dangerous Equations Operating Theatre Live and learning about medical research. This was an excellent day out and gave the Year 8s some extra insight into the vast number of career possibilities available in STEM. Luckily the return journey was relatively straightforward!

News from the Boarding Houses Spero After a week of almost tropical monsoon weather the boarders were ready for the Grand Masquerade Ball. Yes, Lord Buckenham again rolled out the barrels, the barrels of fun, as the guests who were dressed in all their finery danced the night away after a splendid dinner. And what a superb dinner it was with, of course, a wonderful chocolate marquise with vanilla terrine and a raspberry sauce. Everyone took a small breather after that whilst the auction began and prizes such as Mad Hair Day, an Evening with Ben & Jerry and Queue Bargers, all went to the highest bidders. Then it was time for the magician who had already astounded the guests when they arrived in the inner hall for drinks and canapés. On the stage in the dining room he unravelled things from out of nowhere, tied balloons in various shapes and sizes and stuck things through those balloons without them popping. Batman aided and abetted him at times whilst the children looked on suggesting that they all knew how each trick was done. Then Barbara s dance class took centre stage as the first dance was a waltz. The boys had been practising all week and had made great strides.which missed the feet of others.and happily led the way before the Top 20 tunes began to dance off the decks. The rocking dance floors continued as each year took their turn indulging in the chocolate fountain. A wonderful evening was had by all who slept very well before a pyjama breakfast on Sunday morning, followed by church at Brettenham. The trip to Ampton for the point to point was fun although the inclement weather at stages tore across the hillside with people scattering for cover. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous roast before settling in front of films with some tuck. Well done, to all the girls and boys for their efforts over the weekend. I have throughly enjoyed my time up in Spero this week. The atmosphere up here has been very welcoming and if I were a child again I would certainly like to board! The children happily bundled up the stairs to get ready for bed before tucking into a delicious platter of fruit and toast. Games were played in the cosy shared common room before settling down for a good night s sleep. Jo Drake Masquerade Prize Winners On Monday the children who won Mufti Day may wear home clothes:: Charlie Drake, Francis Topham-Smith, Ollie Devine-King, Rufus Harrison, William Wright, Alice Romer-Lee, Elena Garcia and Diego Suarez. Again on Monday the children who won Mad Hair Day may come in with crazy hair but still in school uniform: Charlie Lock, Hugo Harrison, Edward Raymond and Ben Moore.

obh mail IAPS Ski Competition Another triumphant year for the OBH Ski Team in Passo del Tonale. We entered three teams into the championship and each team performed at the top of their game. U9 boys team Champions gold medal U11 mixed team Champions gold medal U13 mixed team Bronze medal. The OBH team was ably lead by Rupert Guinness who won the overall Fastest time on the course. For the second year in a row every member of the team has come away an IAPS medal holder!

Pre-Prep & Nursery In Hedgehog class, we have continued talking about life cycles and had great fun planting bulbs in our wellies! We have been very creative on the build up to Easter...cuteness alert! We have been ordering the magnetic numbers and we have been making number sentences using fruit. This week Grasshopper class have been learning about under the sea and have created their own under water world in a box. The children have also begun thinking about halving and enjoyed halving their cupcakes. During their MBE session with nursery last week, the children made bird feeders and we have been watching a few friendly birds enjoying the treats we have hung up in our outside area. This week the Acorns have enjoyed making hot cross buns in RS whilst learning about Easter. We compared volume and capacity using water and different size containers in numeracy and learnt the different parts of a daffodil by dissecting it in science. Woodpeckers have been continuing their learning about famous people. They learnt that Antarctica is a desert and that in the peak of the summer it doesn t get dark. This week s explorer has been Ed Stafford walking the Amazon. In PSHCE the children remembered the amazing Physicist, Stephen Hawking. A very exciting visitor On Tuesday, the delightful Minnie Winnie (and her owner Rebecca) visited the Pre-Prep. Rebecca read the children her wonderful children s story and then the children were invited to ask questions. The children mainly wanted to tell Rebecca about their own dogs, but she was enchanted and commented many times about their wonderful manners and beautiful behaviour. The children were then invited to either tickle Minnie Winnie s tummy, give her a high 5 or give her a little cuddle. Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Year 1 Reception Nursery Next week Henry Williams Alexandra McVittie Dougie Abbott, Samuel Gosling Ivor Wright We are really looking forward to welcoming parents in twice next week, for the Easter afternoon tea on Tuesday afternoon at 2.30 pm and the Toddle Waddle on Thursday afternoon. Happy Birthday We had a bumper week of birthdays this week. Happy Birthday to Charlotte Warner, Rufus Wells, Charlie Neil, Henry Williams and Jack Barton. It was a really lovely morning. Many thanks indeed to Rebecca for giving up her time to visit us. Have a lovely weekend, Camilla Webster

From the Director of Sport.. Girls Sport Girls U13B Tournament with U11 team Girls U13 v Parents This fixture is the highlight of the girls term! They absolutely love playing the parent match and it is where you see the competitiveness at its highest! Thankfully the rain held off and the centre pass was taken. The girls had a brilliant start and took an early lead thanks to the shooters. Parents played well and there were definitely some hidden talents in their team but they soon realised that scoring goals is harder than it looks and only managed to score 3 in the entire game...but we won't go on about that! The girls continued to play well despite lots of changes to the team and they took the win 12-3! It was a lovely, but very windy afternoon on the netball courts. OBH were hosting their first ever netball B tournament, with lots of very excited girls from four other schools and two teams from OBH. The U13 team played Orwell Park first and held them to a draw (2-2). The girls worked their socks off and played their best ever netball, it was a well-deserved result. Moreton Hall were next and although OBH played well, they lost 5-2. Holmwood House was a very close match which OBH narrowly won 2-1. Girls U11 v Parents On Saturday seven fabulous parents turned out to take on their daughters in a parents v pupils match. It was a tight run game in which the parents took an early lead. However, after settling down post the initial excitement of playing their parents, the U11s came back in the second quarter to bring the score to within one goal. In the third quarter the girls continued to prove successful in attack and going into the last quarter were leading by 5 goals to 4. The more technical aspects of the game proved more difficult for the parents, meaning that they were only able to score one further goal against the girl s two. The final score was a 6-5 win to the girls. Well played to all, a lovely afternoon despite the drizzle. The U11s played in the U13B tournament at home. This was essentially for experience and to stretch the girls in their netball. They rose to the challenge and despite the tough and much taller opposition conducted themselves very well. They lost their matches against Holmwood House and Orwell Park, who were the eventual runners-up and winners. The girls then had very close matches against OBH U13Bs (0-3) and Moreton Hall (1-5). They played a strong match against Riddlesworth Hall, which they won 6-1. A taxing afternoon, but a useful one with lots learnt. Well played, girls.

Girls & Boys Sport Boys 1st VII IAPS U9A & B v Culford On Friday the U9s played against Culford at home. It was a great match with good play from both teams. Both of which had attacking opportunities including penalty corners. OBH played with true tenacity and continued determination. This ultimately paid off in the last 10 minutes, in which they scored two goals in close succession. The final score was 2-0 to OBH. U9A v Orwell Park This was a well fought match with both sides playing some lovely hockey. Orwell Park were slightly more dominant in the first half and this led to them scoring a goal from open play. In the second half OBH continued to play well in both defence and attack; winning long and penalty corners, as well as creating lots of scoring opportunities. There were several exciting moments; including a quick break away with an open chance on goal. Unfortunately, these were not to be and we ended the game 0-1. A well played match, which showed the progress the U9s have made so far this term. U9B v Orwell Park After winning the toss the U9B girls had first push back. We had some good set plays with some strong defending. Half time the score was 1-0 to Orwell so all to play for. They were ready to get back on and play determined to fight hard against them. They kept the pressure going with many near chances. Even though the final score went to Orwell the girls all played excellently and tried to the very end, they should all be proud of themselves! Very well done! This was a rescheduled IAPS tournament after the wintery weather earlier on in the term. For once, at Bishop Stortford, the sun was out! St. Andrews were first and although we played the better hockey we conceded in the final minutes losing the game. Beeston Hall were next and both sets of boys played well, but neither side could score and the game finished 0-0. Witham Hall were a side we had not played before and it was another tight game, again ending up 0-0. Our final game was against Eagle House and we finally managed to score, winning the game 2-0. Unfortunately it was not enough to go through to the finals, just missing out by one point. This was a very close group and one which we should have won, but to give the boys their credit, they played the best hockey! Well done, to the entire squad.

Boys Hockey U13 v Parents Last Saturday it was the parent s chance to dust off the sticks and boots and take to the astro for some fun hockey against their boys. With so many parents wanting to play, the afternoon was packed with games, and the weather, although still a little damp, was perfect for some entertaining action. It is always fun to umpire these games, watching the boys get a real kick out of playing hockey against the mums and dads; some seasoned hockey players enjoyed showing off their silky skills but it is pleasing to report that overall the boys came out on top, and no injuries reported, apart from the odd grazed knee! Plenty of stiff limbs reported on Monday and Tuesday perhaps we should re-kindle the mixed parent s hockey in the summer? Well done, and thank you to all parents that took part. 2 nd VII v Framlingham The second team was able to play against Framlingham on Wednesday afternoon and it was great to see many boys taking the opportunity to play together for the first time. It was going to be tough against a well organised opposition however the boys came together and stuck to their roles superbly well. The first half came and went with the score at 1-1. The boys had held out for long periods of play before the team made plenty of accurate passes and put pressure on the opposition goal. During the second half the game remained finely poised until the opposition squeezed home a winner. It was decided that we would play a final quarter before going to tea although the fixture had ended. The boys were thrilled to have the chance to continue and were able to score a goal with which they were ecstatic. Well done, to the boys on their brilliant efforts. Colts v Parents The boys had a great match against the parents on Saturday. It was an end to end game with the boys fighting hard to get a result. The boys moved the ball with pace and linked up well in the attacking third. The parents did the same however, a few missed chances allowed the boys to keep themselves in the game and make the most of this situation. It was 2-0 to the parents but with some excellent running off the ball and accurate shooting the boys came from behind to come away as 3-2 winners. Well done, to everyone who played and for a great afternoon of hockey. 3rd, 4th & 5th VII v Parents The boys from the third, fourth and fifth teams had been looking forward to playing against their mums and dads who were again delighted to be running around after them. The umpires had had the brief of making sure the contests were fairly adjudicated and then the games commenced. The determination of all was very apparent from the word go and it was not long before the parents were able to get to grips with the surface, the pace of the ball and how if you tried to turn quickly in trainers your luck would run out!! Score draws and narrow wins for the boys meant that the parents could hang up their sticks for another year hopefully injury free barring the skinless knuckles and knees. Occasions like this are great to see and we hope that all enjoyed the fun and camaraderie both on and off the pitches before, during and after the games. The boys very much appreciated their parents turning out to play.

Boys Sport 1st VII Hockey Tournament at Orwell Park Having survived the Beast form the East, the 1st VII boys were struck down with some serious man flu, this meant that some very eager 2nd VII boys stepped in to fill the gaps. It was going to be a tough afternoon but the boys were clearly up for the challenge. The three pool games ended with three losses, but all at 1-0, which meant that OBH were very competitive. In the plate games they beat Orwell and then Ipswich 2-0 which placed them as joint plate winners but unfortunately they lost out on taking the trophy home on goal difference. Credit must be given to this set of boys; they certainly rose to the challenge and showed what real depth we have in our squads. U8 Holmwood House Tag Rugby Tournament The OBH U8A tag rugby team played at Holmwood House on Saturday. It was a brilliant morning of rugby with lots of matches played and a great amount of improvement seen from the boys throughout the tournament. OBH came away from the tournament winning five, drawing two, and losing one. Well done, to all of the boys who took part. Tennis U9 Rugby Festival at Orwell Park OBH played in a tough rugby festival at Orwell Park on Wednesday. They worked hard in each match however struggled to match the size and speed of the many of the teams. During the afternoon the boys lost four matches and won one. It was very pleasing to see the boys fight hard to win against Ipswich. They moved the ball quickly and found the gaps to score a number of well worked tries. Well done, to all of the boys who played and the effort they put into each game. U9 A & B v Culford The boys had a difficult afternoon against two strong Culford sides. The A team struggled to move the ball with pace and gave it away too easily. With strong forward runners and quick offloading Culford were able to score numerous tries and come away as winners. The U9 B team played some good rugby however, too many mistakes enabled Culford to keep possession and score a number of tries. OBH fought hard though and scored a few well worked tries however it was Culford who were victorious on the day. Mum's tennis is now up and running on a Monday morning. We have a nice number playing each week and have approximately three spaces remaining. The session time is 8:30-10am and is a great chance to pick up a tennis racket again, stay fit and maybe even meet some new friends. If you would like to play, or would like to know more, please josh.bolt@obh.co.uk Thank you. Mr Bolt and his team will be running the usual Sports and Tennis Camps at Easter. These usually prove very popular and consist of a variety of indoor and outdoor sports in addition to plenty of tennis. They will run on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th April from 9:30am-3pm. The cost is 25 per day and is open to all pupils in the prep school. Please josh.bolt@obh.co.uk to book in or for further info. Thank you.

And finally Another incredibly busy week has concluded and we continue to hurtle towards the end of term. The Masquerade Ball was a triumph, the Big Bang Fair in Birmingham much enjoyed by our budding Scientists, our skiers have once again been crowned IAPS champions in two different age groups, Year 7 and 8 have been going through their recent mock exams and the rest of the school has carried on working hard too! Next week plans to be no less busy! I hope that many of you managed to meet David Griffiths today, if not we will soon be publishing his visits to the school next term. In the meantime he has been kind enough to write a few words of introduction below. Have a wonderful weekend. Tom O Sullivan Headmaster And finally. From David Griffiths Dear Parents, It is a challenge for me to write concisely about how excited we are to be joining Old Buckenham Hall. We cannot wait! When I first saw the advert for a Head to replace Tom O Sullivan, certainly ticked all the right boxes. Boarding and day, rural, successful, a strong board of governors and a good reputation. On paper it looked to be a great fit. However, it was not until Becky and I drove through the gates, that we really got a sense of just how special was. It is not an overstatement to say that we were absolutely convinced that this was the right school for our family and that we could carry on the great work that Tom has led in recent years. We were met (and grilled!) by lovely groups of children from Years 3 and 4 and then Years 7 and 8. The staff were generous with their time and gushing about the school and we were enchanted by the buildings and the history of the school. In short, it was more than we had ever expected. When I was offered the headship after the final interviews, it was simply not something that we had to think about. Becky was out shopping when I took the phone call and all I had to do was greet her with a glass of champagne. We are delighted to be joining you and look forward to many years at your wonderful school. The same can be said of our children Lucy, Llywelyn and Gwenllian. They will become Old Buckenham Hall children in every sense, and we are looking forward to giving them an introduction to the school over Easter. We also bring with us two welsh boarder collies and our cat. While the eldest collie is now very aged, our 11 month-old puppy will thrive at and I hope that he will become as loved as Scooby. While I have lots of ideas for the school, at this stage, all I want to do is reiterate that we are extremely excited about our summer move and we look forward to getting to know you and your families in the months and years to come. We will visit several times this academic year and hope that we can say a quick hello at the very least. has a wonderful history and the future of the school is bright indeed. I am delighted to be a part of it. Very best wishes to all and I hope to meet you soon. David Griffiths
