3 THE AUSTRALIAN FRESHWATER FISHES CATALOGUE 2 3 Compared to the other continents with warm to mild climates, Australia is home to a relative small number of freshwater fishes. Only 4 species are considered to be primary freshwater fishes, species which evolved in freshwater. All others are believed to have marine ancestors, and many still move from sea to freshwater (or vice versa) during their life. Some need to do so in order to reproduce. Whilst some spent most of their life in freshwater, others may only do so for short periods, so the definition of what a freshwater fish is, is somewhat open to interpretation, it depends on the viewpoint of the interested party. So depending on this view, this number can vary from about 200 to 300 species. This volume contains images of the remaining perch-like fishes not covered by THE AUSTRALIAN FRESHWATER FISHES CATALOGUE 1, the gudgeons & gobies, as well as species like soles, toadfish, sharks, rays and sawfish, as well as introduced fishes. It covers most species. Hardyheads, rainbowfishes and blue-eyes can be found in THE RAINBOWFISH CATALOGUE. 4 As in the other catalogues in this series, the text is kept to a minimum. 4 Only common and scientific names, author and year of description, as well as place of origin (if known), either of the fish in the image, or the parents (if captive bred) are given. The sizes given in centimetres (cm) indicate the size of the fish in the image, not the size the species may reach. The size given refers to the largest fish in the image. Sizes are also given in standard length (SL), from the tip of the snout to the beginning, not end, of the tail fin.
