PA PA PA None Franklin News-Herald - 19 October 1923 The Young Crusaders Sunday school class and their teacher, Maude Watson, were delightfully entertained last Thursday evening in the Cassidy home. Refreshments were served and during the evening a box of gifts was presented their teacher as an expression of appreciation of her faithful service in their behalf. Also a farewell party was given in our own hall on the evening of October 13, in honor of Mrs. William Watson and daughter, Maude. Games, music and socialbility and refreshments were enjoyed by all. The Watsons left for Pittsburgh on Saturday to remain until Tuesday, with the son and brother, McKay Watson and family. They then go to East Bakersfield, Cal., to spend the winter with Mrs. Kate Troutner and her daughter, May. Obit of Catherine (Pryer) Troutner, from a Bakersfield, CA Newspaper 23 Nov 1923, p 1 Catherine Troutner Mother of Local Teacher Passes On Mrs. Catherine Pryor Troutner died this morning at her home at 1006 Oregon Street. She had resided in East Bakersfield 10 years. The deceased is survived by one daughter, Miss Mary Troutner, who is a teacher in the Williams School, also two sisters and one brother who live in eastern states. The body is at the Hopson mortuary from where funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o clock with Rev. Irvin Engle, pastor of the East Bakersfield Methodist church officiating. Interment will be in the Union cemetery. Obituary of Catherine (Pryer) Troutner, Oil City Derrick 5 December 1923 Catherine Troutner Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Kate Troutner, which occurred at Bakersfield, California on Nov. 23 after a short illness from pneumonia. Mrs. Troutner was a resident of Rockland for many years, but has made her home with her daughter, Mae, who is a teacher in the Bakersfield schools. Mrs. Troutner was in her 87 th year. Evelyn said that Mae Troutner was an old maid schoolteacher. Evelyn barely remembers her. Shortly after Evelyn started to school, Mae moved to California and taught school out there and eventually died there. Evelyn remembers a family of Troutners that lived close to Davis Corners but she didn t know their names. There was an area which was called the old Troutner place. Mae was a cousin to Abner. Mae s mother was probably Catherine Pryer Troutner. Phone Interview With Charles Gordon Pryer of Stuart, Florida, 8 Dec Charles used to know Oren and Hollister Sollinger. He knew of no Shawls. Charles knew where the Troutner homestead was. When he was a boy the place was deserted an no one lived there after that. The place was always deserted as early as he can remember. Death Notice of James D. Troutner, 19 July 1877 James D. Troutner of Rockland Twp. died at Dixmont Hospital on 10 instant. His remains were brought to Rockland for burial. Troutner a Civil War Veteran who died ten years later.

5 They lived in Rockland, Venango County, Pennsylvania one mile north of Davis Corners. To them were born two children: Burton Lovell who died in infancy and Mary May, born April 7, Mary May graduated from Clarion State Normal School in June She taught school from then until she retired at the age of 65. She taught mission schools in Georgia, Florida, and Missouri under the Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church. About 1913 she went to Bakersfield, California where she taught in the primary grades until she retired. As there were only she and her mother left of the family her mother went with her wherever she taught. Catherine Pryer Troutner died at Bakersfield, California enjoying good health until six months before her death at the age of 85 years and 9 months. After Mary May retired she married Carl Byers, a retired mail carrier. Their married life was not the happy one they had anticipated because of sickness. First Mary May was sick for some time. After she recovered Carl had a stroke and became quite a care until his death July 19, Mary May died June 14, 1950 less than a year after her husband. Both Catherine P. Troutner and her daughter, May, were faithful active Christians, members of the Methodist Church. Notes From A Letter Written By Mae Troutner To Her Cousin, Maudabelle Watson Where did this Fred come from? He was not around there when I was, or least I never heard of him until that gas station came across the road from you. I was glad and interested in hearing about the improvement of the Emlenton Cemetery. That is a real hill. I remember how steep it used to be and I suppose it is about the same. I just cannot imagine how Delbert, Dana, Fan, and Kit Jolly would look, all older of course. I wish Delbert Jolly luck in his undertaking, but I fear he will not get back very far. I am quite sure that our Grandfather Pryer came from Center Co. but I do not know his father s name. I couldn t name Myra s children or Lizzies either. And Pearl, she must have a dozen or more. Where does Nita live? Over in Cranberry somewhere perhaps. So it was Aunt Jane who got the old Bible. I was not sure. I thought it might have been Aunt Hannah, but Aunt Jane was the oldest. The Abraham Lusher which you say was my step-grandfather. He married my grandmother Troutner after grandfather Troutner died. Abraham Lusher was the father of Uncle John Lusher, Uncle David, Aunt Jane Hughes, Aunt Kate McGinnis and Aunt Nan Gilger. He was a brother of our grandmother Lusher-Pryer and Uncle Jonathan. My mother s step-father-in-law was her uncle. But my father and mother were no relation. Wish I could see a copy of what Delbert gets worked out. And just now I cannot think of Delbert s grandfather Pryer s name. Aunt Katie was his grandmother. I remember being there several times. Info Provided by Beverly Card, -- betty26@airmail.net Here is what the 1933 American and Canadian Hospital had to say about Dixmont. It was a hospital in Allegheny County, it was called at that time Dixmont Hospital for the Insane. "It was a specialized hospital--services in mental and nervous diseases". It had a school of nursing which was established in 1889, x-ray and clinical labs, physcal and occupational therapy, and 962 beds. Owned by an association and governed by a board of directors. It was established in 1847, when $30,000 was raised to establish the hospital. When the first patients were accepted in 1853, the criteria was the sick poor, the infirm, the helpless and the lunatics. Later the board decided in 1854 that the insane could not be best treated in general hospital, so ground was purchased fronting the Ohio River about 8 miles west of Pittsburgh at a place known as Dixmont Station. As of 1931, the census was 1,146." don't know when it closed.... in the 1950's,... sent to Woodville State Hospital for our psychiatric service and this was used to treat citizens of Allegheny County outside the city of Pittsburgh; Mayview State Hospital treated patients who were residents of the city. So it may have been closed by then. I don't know whether the place was Dixmont

6 Station because of or before Dorthea Dix although she was widely known for her work in both military nursing and psychiatric nursing.
