September 2018 Newsletter Community News and Upcoming Events International Coastal Cleanup Date Has Been Changed Due to water conditions at our beaches caused by red tide, Keep Lee County Beautiful has decided this event will be postponed until October 13, This will give the red tide situation an additional four weeks to subside. The water quality has already improved by a tremendous amount from what it was like at the end of July. By October 13 we should have much nicer conditions for our Coastal Cleanup volunteers. This will also allow our Cape Coral sites time for the blue/green algae problem to improve. Our registration site will remain open until October 12, 2018.

During the 2017 International Coastal Cleanup, nearly 800,000 volunteers collectively removed more than 20 million pieces of trash from beaches and waterways around the world.

3 Plastics In The Environment New studies that have been published in the last five years by leading researchers have led to some startling findings. It is now estimated that the total amount of plastic entering the ocean from land to be about 8 million metric tons per year. Here are a few of the pieces to the marine debris puzzle that have been recently discovered. Microplastics are not just an ocean problem, but rather a global problem, affecting freshwater and even land based ecosystems. It has been shown that exposure to microplastics decreases the reproduction and population growth rate in zooplankton animals that form the base of the ocean food chain.

Keep Lee County Beautiful gives these calendars to our local schools so they can sell them to generate funds to be used for an environmentally themed project. By doing this the students first become aware of protecting the environment through art and then they continue this environmental education in a number a ways with the funds they raise from their calendar sales. 6 Monofilament Madness November 3, 2018 Join us in removing monofilament fishing line and other harmful debris from the waters around the Mound House, Matlacha Community Park and Fish Tale Marina. Volunteers will go out in kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, boats and jet skis to gather fishing line and debris. This project not only cleans these popular fishing areas of a large amount of fishing line and litter, it also helps to bring awareness to those in the local area when they see this project taking place. 7 America's Largest Grocery Chain Is Going Plastic Bag Free Kroger announced that they plan to no longer be using plastic bags at any of their nearly 2,800 stores by Annually Kroger orders about six billion plastic bags a year. Removing these from our waste stream is a remarkable win for the environment and will hopefully encourage other retailers to follow their lead. Event Updates

Circus TransformUS August 25 & 26, 2018 Keep Lee County Beautiful, Inc. had the pleasure to be able to have an information table set up at this wonderful show.

8 Circus TransformUS August 25 & 26, 2018 Keep Lee County Beautiful, Inc. had the pleasure to be able to have an information table set up at this wonderful show. We had the opportunity to meet many of the patrons that came to view this performance that showcased the plight of our environment in a moving portrayal of how we must protect the world we live in. This was produced by Carla Hyde & Christar Damiano and it was held at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre. The performance was done in a circus atmosphere with fantastic gymnastics and spectacular costumes to tell the story of what is being done to Mother Nature.

Morning After Mess Cleanup July 5th, 2018 As expected there was a bit of a mess on the beaches to be cleaned up in the morning following the 4th of July celebrations.

9 Morning After Mess Cleanup July 5th, 2018 As expected there was a bit of a mess on the beaches to be cleaned up in the morning following the 4th of July celebrations. We had a very good turnout of volunteers who gathered over 385 pounds of litter from the beaches. This makes a significant difference as all of this trash is only one storm away from getting washed into the ocean. Keep Lee County Beautiful wants to thank all of our volunteers for their hard work and help in protecting the environment. Would you like to help keep Lee County beautiful!
