2 It seems we had a silver lining when we moved our auction date from February to March. We had a large group of supporters and they came to buy. They also came to eat! The kitchen staff reported record numbers as did the Aucton Committee. Thank you to all the people that worked and helped to make this day enjoyable. We had Ray Bierbower from Erie Aquarium Society speak at our meeting in March on building a fishroom and it was well received.. The members asked good questions and lots of them. Ray is very well educated and can hold the audience interest while he is talking. I believe he is one of the best speakers we have had at our meetings and and in my opinion well become a world renowned speaker if he so chooses. If you are lucky enough to get a date booked for him, you will not be disappointed. April brings the annual awards banquet and this month. We have many awards to present so I know that many of our members have been busy breeging, propagating, and writing. in regards to this hobby. Our membership chairman is reporting new memberships each month and I am seeing many new and young faces at the recent meetings. It is good to see that the hobby will be represented by the younger generation. I have nothing new spawning in my tanks at this point but Kim was gracious enough to provide me with a spawning pair of Jewels. Thanks Kim! Perhaps I will see some fry in the near future. I know they are common but they are very pretty and relatively mild tempered for an African riverine cichlid. That is all for now. 5 Breeding Discus Symphysodon aequifasciatus By Josh Vito For many, discus fish are considered the king of the aquarium due to their unique coloration, size, and shape. This South American Cichlid originates from the Amazon River basin, but most aquarium species are selectively bred for color variations by fellow aquarists and fish farms. For many years now, discus have been part of my collection, but due to space constraints, I could not attempt to breed the species. In a way, my current breeding pair was an accidental pairing. While I set up my new fish room, three large adult discus fish were sharing a 75G tank. Two fish were recently acquired at an auction. Since I was unsure of their age, and they were of a smaller size, they were placed into a 55G community tank for growth before adding them to the rest of the group in the 75G tank. Of the three in the 75G, it appeared that a pair had formed. Two of the three fish secluded themselves to one side of the tank, and the other fish were giving them space. Once this perceived pair started cleaning spots on the driftwood in the tank, I removed the one outcast discus to the 55G community tank. Still, many weeks later, this original pair has not spawned, but continue to perform their mating dance. They swim together, and continue to clean the driftwood in the tank. I think they may both be of the same sex, because I have not seen any eggs in the tank. I have only noticed one or two surviving fry from these initial spawns. Simply Discus forum has many accounts that are similar, and I assume the pair just needs a bit more practice. I ll continue my account of the behavior with fry in the second part of this article. I just need to give nature more time, so that I am talking from experience and not expectations. Current water parameters and feeding regiment is as follows: Water changes are performed as often as I can make RO water (~3-4 times a week) Each water change is about 50% tank volume, and I do not change water while there are eggs, only when there are wigglers or fry. I always attempt to keep eggs/wigglers submerged. ph is between 6-7; TDS on my meter reads ~50; temperature is Meanwhile, of the three fish in the 55G, another pair had formed and were guarding the eggs in one side of the tank. The 55G has since been divided, and the pair have spawned every ~5 days since. Each consecutive spawn has been more successful, and I attribute it to the new pair figuring out parenthood. Here are some photos of the different locations my pair has utilized for their spawning site. Tropical Fish Club of Erie County. Inc. Newsletter April 2015 Page 5
6 consistent at 79 degrees F; feed 2-3 times a day; mix of various flake, cichlid bits/granules, live blackworms After three failed attempts, my new pair of discus have had a successful spawn. The eggs were laid on or around June 19st, The fry were all free swimming on June 26th, 2012 (Age = Day 1). Just as some others have noted, it often takes new pairs a few tries to get it right, and my pair succeeded on their fourth try. The fish actually spawned after they had wigglers in the tank, but few to none fry survived from that spawn. I have made every attempt to document the grow out of the free swimming discus fry. The tank water parameters are listed below along with a few photos to capture their development and size. I started feeding baby brine shrimp (bbs) starting at day 5 (free swimming). The bbs is offered 3 times a day, and the parents are fed 2-3 times a day also (except lighter feeding on Sundays). Once the fry became more independent at around Day 10, I started adding finely ground earthworm flakes to the tank at feeding time to start to ween them off of bbs. My water change schedule is mostly daily at this point, to keep the fry growing. If I miss a day, I try to compensate with a larger water change the next day. My replacement water is RO with Seachem Equilibrim added to raise to ~70-90 ppm on the TDS meter. I test the water every week, and the usual readings are as follows: Ph 7.0 Temp 78.5 NH3/NH4 0 TDS 103 GH/KH ppm I will continue to keep up the hard work of raising these fry, for experience, and to turn them in for BAP points at my local aquarium society, Tropical Fish Club of Erie County. Look for another update here once the fry are at an age of 2 months and ready for new homes. If you want to follow along more closely, I keep a journal at Simply Discus Forum.
