1 Montgomery Parks Biological Monitoring in the Anacostia Watershed of Montgomery County PARK PLANNING & STEWARDSHIP Doug Redmond, Natural Resources Manager Montgomery County Department of Parks September 13, 2012 The Anacostia Watershed Anacostia drainage in Montgomery County comprises 61 square miles Accounts for 1/3 of the drainage area to the Anacostia River MWCOG Partnership 2 1

2 Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Biological Monitoring The diversity of fish and benthic macroinvertebrates (aquatic bugs) are studied within a 75 meter transect. Those data are averaged and used to create an IBI that indicates water quality as being excellent, good, fair or poor. Scoring Criteria for Fish IBI Metrics Scoring Criteria (a) Metric (b) Total number of fish species >7 4-7 <4 2. Number of riffle benthic insectivorous individuals > <7 3. Number of minnow species (Cyprinidae) >4 3-4 <3 4. Number of intolerant species > Proportion of tolerant individuals <60% 60-80% >81% 6. Proportion of individuals as omnivores/generalists <55% 55-77% >77% 7. Proportion of individuals as insectivores >39% 20-39% <20% 8. Proportion of individuals as pioneering species <53% 53-76% >76% 9. Total number of individuals (excluding tolerants sp.) > < Proportion with disease/anomalies <2.2% % >4.1% (a) Scoring Criteria are based on the 1995 and 1996 reference streams. (b) Metrics are based on Karr et al. (1986) original scoring criteria, and modifications from Plafkin et al. (1989) and Hall et al. (1993).
