7 Marine capture fisheries profile Continued Monitoring, control and surveillance systems: Iranian Fisheries org., Now, is working on Monitoring and surveillance system using Offline method and hybrid online method (HF Band DATA packet S/R and Inmarsat Marine GPS Solution). Responsible management authority: By translating FAO Publications related to Responsible Fisheries such as Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, Iranian Fisheries Org., applies these principles for planning sustainable, responsible and long-term strategy for Iranian Fisheries body which supports fish resources in the seas. Management options (input/output controls): We are using a web- based Fisheries MIS application completely designed open source that collects fisheries (Aquaculture and fishery) statistics online from whole country (Iranian Fisheries Branches), completely online with a lot of report types. The exported DATA of fishery then imports in a other Offline desktop application for finalizing fishery statistics and reports. Aquaculture ulture stats directly extracts from MIS system: Major concerns (IUU, overcapacity, overfishing, etc.): Iranian Fisheries Org. recommends completely standard fishing gears and instruments, Fishermen's fishing nets are completely checked before starting fishing periods.

12 Aquaculture country profile Continued Market and trade: Farmed fishes specially Rainbow Trout and cultured shrimp has good market in Iran, Although we export more than 100 Million US$ export to other countries. By more than 80 whole sailing market across the country, farmed fisheries products are distributed in Retail sailing shops. Institutional framework: Deputy of Aquaculture at Iranian Fisheries Org., manages and plans development of Aquaculture industry in country. It contains 4 general directorates as follow: 1- Stock enhancement GD 2- Fish culture GD 3- Shrimp culture GD. 4- Aquaculture technical management and farmers state GD. Applied research, education and training: 2 offices manage and plan applied educations and trainings for official personnel and farmers: 1- Aquaculture technical management and farmers state GD at aquaculture deputy for farmers extensional educations. They had educational and extensional programs for fish and shrimp farmers and interested people, At the other hand there mass-learning ways for advertising consumption of Aquatic products for whole people. 2- Human resource management GD has mission for developing official fisheries personnel s educations and abilities.

13 Iranian Fisheries research institute consists 13 fisheries research centers across the country for performing the scientific applied researches regarding to the related subjects to aquatic organisms and their environment for approaching the best protection and stocks recovering and sustainable exploitation from live resources in Iranian waters Aquaculture Trend (Development and production): Aquaculture Production Aquaculture developm ent program

Case studies National Fishing Ports Database, A GIS: Introduction: For better management of fishing ports, and planning for developing fishing ports or new port constructions, Iranian fisheries organization started for design a GIS at Main issue or objective addressed: 1- Using GIS for fishery ports development. 2- Using GIS for better monitoring available fishery ports DATA in processed format and query. 3- Creating a good base for a National global fisheries GIS. Methods/data/equipment/personnel: The first part of this program was based on gathering raw data by field study and research in last same researched documents and data. After that, Complete gathered raw data imported in a Geodatabase using Microsoft- SQL server. Now all of data related to fishery ports across the country is monitored by ArcGIS software. 2 experts from Fishery ports Development and construct GD and a consultant company are working on this research base program.

15 Case studies Continued Results: After 3 years of starting this program, According to Fishery Ports GIS benefits for our organization, Iranian fisheries organization on have started design a global and complete GIS. IT office of Iranian fisheries org. is focal point for this project. We will replicate current available fisheries data from our MIS (MySQL database) and current GIS database into a GIS application. My team are working hard to achieve this in open-source world (Inshaallah).

16 Case studies Continued Benefits of GIS, remote sensing and/or mapping to solving the problem or aim of the case study: 1- Well Categorize raw data about whole country fishery ports. (Thousands of papers) 2- Easy to use and user friendly application (ArcGIS). 3- Give Visual and dimensional ability for user to select his/her queries. 4- Complete and well assigned data on professional geographical maps. 5- Fast and easy create a lot of specific reports. Challenges: 1- Has not been started with a global view. 2- Out sourcing structure of plan to private sector. Opportunities: 1- Although there are challenges but now GIS is not a new project for Iranian Fisheries Organization. 2- A lot of raw data, now have been assigned in a great database system.

Challenges and major issues Challenges: 1- Limit knowledge of Developing countries' fisheries body specially mid-level and senior managers about GIS: As you may feel in your country, mid-level and senior managers, unfortunately, have limit knowledge in IT area, specially in case of MIS and GIS as a effective and very useful system could help them in current and future decisions. 2- In case of our country, sanctions for use original maps and software, then we have to design new applications instead of available softwares s and maps. 3- Challenge for collecting complete and exact raw data from fisheries body. Opportunities: 1- powerful IT software and Network developer team at Iranian Fisheries Organization. 2- Good Network, hardware basics and structure for online DATA collecting lecting and monitoring whole of country. 3- Complete and Useful raw DATA and documents at Iranian Fisheries organization deputies should be managed and analyzed by a GIS for better development plans.

18 Challenges and major issues Ongoing initiatives relevant to the scope of the workshop and the development of spatial planning strategy Initiatives: Continued 1- Study modern technology for better fishery and better management of natural resources. 2- Have a great opportunity to share knowledge and idea with my region countries. 3- Have a great possibility to discuss about same challenges in way of GIS in our country.
