1 Fall Creek Falls Activities July 12 th 19 th Welcome to Fall Creek Falls State Park! Summer vacation time is here and what a great place to spend it! The park provides a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some hiking, picnicking, boating, swimming, and wildlife watching while taking in the beautiful scenery. We encourage you to take advantage of the programs we have arranged for your enjoyment and enlightenment. *A parent or guardian must accompany youngsters 12 years old and younger. Sunday, July 12 th 9:00am Hike to the Base of Fall Creek Falls Meet Jonathan at the Main Overlook of Fall Creek Falls for a short but strenuous hike to the bottom of the falls. Along the way, we will discuss our park s forest ecology and geology. Wood You Like to Know About Beavers? Meet Courtney at the Rec. Hall to learn all about these engineering rodents. Wild Hogs! Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center to learn about those invasive and destructive critters roaming the woods. Pontoon Boat Tour Meet Cara at the Boat Dock for a pontoon boat tour around the lake. There is a limit of 8 and a Bowling Meet Courtney at the Rec. Hall for some bowling. Pontoon Boat Tour Meet Cara at the Boat Dock for a pontoon boat tour around the lake. There is a limit of 8 and a The Cup Song Meet Courtney at the Rec. Hall to learn how to use a cup as an instrument. This technique was used in the movie Pitch Perfect. Photography Lessons Join Jonathan at the Nature Center to learn how to take pictures of flowers and waters or whatever you see. Bring a camera and we will practice key techniques to capture an image you would love to keep. Monday, July 13 th 9:30am Canoeing and Kayaking Meet Courtney at the Boat Dock to explore Fall Creek Falls 345 acre lake. Canoes/Kayaks are available first-come, first-serve. This program has a fee of $7 for canoe/kayak rental, payable at the Boat Dock.

2 Page 2 Nature Center Ramble Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center for a short walk around the grounds to see what flora and fauna can be found in the area. Mouse Pets Meet Devan at the Rec. Hall to make a cute little mouse that you will be sure keep around. Beaver Lodge Hike Meet Courtney at the Youth Camp 2 gate for a hike to the Beaver Lodge. We will view and discuss beaver activity along the trail and get up close to a beaver lodge. This is a moderate hike, so bring along plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes. Pontoon Boat Tour Meet Jonathan at the Boat Dock for a pontoon boat tour around the lake. There is a limit of 8 and a fee of $7 per seat. You must sign up at the Boat Dock. No refunds will be given for cash transactions or customer 2:15pm Corn Hole Tournament Meet Devan at the Rec. Hall to play a fun game of corn hole. No refunds will be given for cash transactions or customer Tuesday, July 14 th 9:00am Hike to Fall Creek Falls Overlook Meet Jon at the Nature Center for a moderate 2-mile roundtrip hike to Fall Creek Falls. We will discuss various rocks, plants, and animals along the way. Acorn Cap Candles Meet Logan at the Rec. Hall to make some decorative candles using natural materials. Frog Slideshow Hop on over to the Rec. Hall and meet Logan to learn about these amphibians. Basketball Gotcha Games Meet Logan at the Rec. Hall to play some basketball gotcha games. Wednesday, July 15 th 9:30am DANGER! Meet Jon at the Rec. Hall to discover some of the dangers of the wild and how to survive them. 2:00pm 4:00pm Cable Trail Hike Join Logan at the Nature Center for a short but strenuous hike down the Cable Trail to the bottom of Cane Creek Falls. This is a great opportunity to experience the grandeur of one of our park s most prominent geological features. Wear sturdy shoes and bring along some water. a Rummy Meet Jon at the Rec. Hall to learn how to play Rummy. a Bottle Cap Lures Meet Jon at the Rec. Hall to learn how to turn old bottle caps into cool fishing lures.

3 Page 3 Thursday, July 16 th 9:15am Buzzard s Roost Hike Meet Jon at the Main Overlook of Fall Creek Falls for an easy hike to Millikan s Overlook and Buzzard s Roost. Learn about native wildlife and geology while taking in the breathtaking views from some of the park s most popular overlooks. Wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. 2:45pm 3:45pm 8:30pm Paddle Boat Race Meet Courtney at the Boat Dock and take the helm of a paddle boat for a competitive race around the lake. Paddle boats are available first-come, first-serve. This program has a fee of $1.75 per paddle boat, payable at the Boat Dock. Siege the Day Meet Devan at the Rec. Hall. Grab your shield and storm the castle with this small catapult craft. a Wheeler Farm Meet Courtney at the Nature Center for a short drive to the Wheeler Farm to view some spectacular geologic features. Please provide your own transportation. Carpooling is recommended. This will be a moderately strenuous 2-mile roundtrip hike to a natural bridge and shallow but beautiful waterfall. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring along some water. Lakeside Hike to Fall Creek Falls Meet Jonathan at the lobby of the Inn for a moderate 4-mile, roundtrip hike on a paved trail to the top of Fall Creek Falls. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with some of our park s native plants and animals and learn about the park s history. Billiards Tournament Meet Devan at the Rec. Hall to participate in a pool tourney. a Cane Pole Fishing Meet Jon at the Boat Dock and get ready to test your old-time fishing skills. Borrow one of our cane poles or bring your own rod. Kids under 14 years old fish for free. Persons 14 years old and older require a state fishing license and a park lake permit. You must provide your own bait. Bait and permits are available at the Boat Dock. Bugging Out Meet Jonathan at Picnic Shelter #2 (above the Nature Center) to see what insects come to light in the night. Friday, July 17 th 9:30am Hike to the Base of Fall Creek Falls Meet Courtney at the Main Overlook of Fall Creek Falls for a short but strenuous hike to the bottom of the falls. Along the way, we will discuss our park s forest ecology and geology. Edible/Medicinal Plant Hike Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center for a short hike discussing some of the historical importance of our native plants. Bee Plant Stakes Meet Logan at the Rec. Hall to make bee autiful stakes for your potted plants. Moths Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center to learn all about these nocturnal insects. Wildlife Jeopardy Meet Logan at the Rec. Hall to join in a friendly competition and show off how much you know about our native wildlife and maybe learn some things along the way. Pelt Identification Meet Courtney at the Nature Center to learn about some furry creatures around the park.

4 Page 4 6:45pm Ping-Pong Meet Logan at the Rec. Hall to try your hand at a game of ping-pong. Creek Critters Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center to explore the park s underwater environment. Be sure to wear shoes that you can get wet. The Heavens Above! Would you like to learn about the night sky, the use of telescopes, star wheels, and binoculars, and why the seasons occur? Join us at the lobby of the Fall Creek Falls Inn for a short trip to the telescope viewing area to learn about all of these things and observe distant galaxies, planets, exploding stars, and beautiful star fields through several large telescopes. Thanks to the members of the Astronomy in the Parks Society for providing this program. Saturday, July 18 th 9:30am Nature Bingo Meet Jonathan at the Rec. Hall to learn about the environment while playing bingo. 10:45am 1 1:00pm Butterfly Craft Meet Jonathan at the Rec. Hall to make your own butterfly out of materials provided. a Solar Viewing Meet at the Fall Creek Falls Inn to view Sol, our own life giving star, through a specially designed telescope. Viewing will last until. Birding on the Gilbert Gaul Trail Meet Courtney at the Youth Camp 2 gate for a hike along the Gilbert Gaul Trail. This lakeside hike is a great place to view a variety of our feathered friends. Bring binoculars if you have them. a 2:00pm Tie-Dye Meet the Friends of Fall Creek Falls at the Rec. Hall to brighten up your wardrobe! There will be a fee of $1 per person, or $5 if you wish to purchase a white shirt from the Friends. Cash only can be accepted. 4:30pm 6:45pm Snake Show Meet Logan at the Nature Center to get up close and personal with some of the park s more elusive residents. Hey Deer! Meet Jonathan at the Rec. Hall to learn about White Tailed Deer. Ninja Meet Courtney at the Nature Center to test your quickness skills with this fun and challenging hand game! Motivation and laughter required. 5 Sunday, July 19 th 9:00am Camps Branch Cave Tour Go caving with Devan at Camps Branch Cave! A $10 fee, waiver, participation limit, and special regulations apply. Inquire at the Nature Center for details and signup instructions. Page 5 9:30am Paw Paw Trail Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center for a moderate hike along the Paw Paw Trail. This will be a good time to view some trees, birds, and other interesting sights. Bring along plenty of water. Pine Cone Bird Feeders Meet Courtney at the Rec. Hall to learn how to make your own bird feeder out of pine cones. Water Bottle Decorations Meet Courtney at the Rec. Hall to turn your unwanted trash into a treasure. a Nature Scavenger Hunt Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center for a sense sharpening scavenger hunt. a Foxes of Fall Creek Falls Meet Courtney at the Rec. Hall to learn about the different types of foxes that call Fall Creek Falls home. Owl Talk Meet Jonathan at the Nature Center to learn about our owls. Cool Nature Fact Did you know that we have both red and grey fox on the park? Grey fox are a common sight around the park at night so watch for them crossing the roads after dark. Grey fox are the only members of the dog family that can climb trees. They have been known to den as high as 30 feet in hollow oak trees. Native wildlife is among the many topics discussed in the Fall Creek Falls 2½-day or 5-day Environmental Education Program for school groups.
