Fishermen catch fish to eat and just for fun. Most people fish in warm weather. They fish from the dock or from a boat. But some people love to fish in cold weather! Cold weather fishing is called ice fishing. People fish on frozen lakes or ponds. Ice fishing is a fun winter activity. Some people even fish in contests. Cities in the northern U.S. and Canada have contests. These contests can be for adults or kids. Beginners can learn to ice fish. Fishermen can win prizes for the fish they catch. 2 news page Have you ever gone ice fishing? First you must learn the rules. You may need a fishing license. You must find out what fishing gear you need and how to use it. To help stay warm, some people fi sh in an ice shanty. An ice shanty is a small house that an ice fi sherman takes out on the ice. It has an opening in the fl oor to fi sh through. The ice shanty helps Fishermen need a hat, gloves, a winter coat and boots to stay warm. protect fi shermen from cold winter weather. Some ice shanties are made of wood. 4 news page Safety is the most important thing to learn about ice fi shing. Always be careful near ice or water! Never go ice fi shing alone. Only go with an adult. The adult knows where the ice is safe. Only thick ice is safe to walk on. Thin ice can break. Always wear a life jacket on the ice, just in case. Be safe and have fun.
