Passports will make enjoying our state parks more affordable and much more convenient. With a passport, families can enjoy a year full of adventure and outdoor activities. Kansans will be able to purchase their passport during their motor vehicle registration process. This will need to be renewed every year during this process. By law, passports are nontransferable to another vehicle. If you purchase your annual park permit before you register your vehicle, a pro-rated refund may be requested after you have purchased your passport. Refund forms are available at any KDWPT state park office or through ksoutdoors.com. Passports will cost $15.00, with a possible $.50 transaction fee. This is $10.00 less than purchasing your permit through a KDWPT office or website. For more information regarding park passports, contact: Pratt Operations Office (620) Open House~March 9th! 4 P A G E 4 Boating Smart at Tuttle Creek Boating at Tuttle Creek Lake can be a safe and enjoyable experience if all the right preparations are made. Kansas Natural Resource Officers do vessel inspections at Tuttle Creek Lake, and will be checking for all the required safety equipment to make your outing a safe one. Resource Officers when doing a safety inspection will ask for the BOAT REGIS- TRATION, and check the KA NUMBERS on the vessel. They will also ask how many people will be on board and what the BOAT S CA- PACITY for the number of people and or weight is. Next an officer will ask to see LIFE JACKETS for everybody aboard the vessel and that they are of proper fit. They will also check to see if there is a TYPE IV THROW-ABLE on board. The lifejackets will also need to be READ- ILY ACCESSABLE and not stored in a compartment! Also remember anyone 12 YEARS OLD and YOUNGER MUST wear a life jacket at all times when on board a boat. Officers will also ask to see if there is a fire extinguisher on board and that it is fully charged and serviceable. Additionally a sound producing device is required whether it be a horn or whistle. Type IV throwable, fire extinguisher and a sound producing device are all required on vessels 16 feet in length or longer. Any person between the ages of 12 and 20 who wishes to operate a vessel (PWC, power boat, sailboat) without direct supervision MUST complete an approved boater education course. Personal Water Craft (PWC) must also comply with all boating laws, registration procedures, operation and equipment requirements in addition to the regulations specific to PWC s. Every person onboard a PWC must wear an approved life jacket, and each person operating a PWC is equipped with a lanyard engine cut-off shall attach the lanyard to the operators person, clothing or life jacket. Also PWC s are not legal to operate between sunset and sunrise. Following these simple safety rules will help make your boating experience at Tuttle Creek Lake a much safer and enjoyable outing. We had an exceptional spawn in 2011 and harvest rates for 2013 are expected to be excellent! Saugeye Good The saugeye population has been steadily increasing the last few years and is currently at a 6 year high! 84% of the sampling were over the 15 length limit. White bass Good White bass numbers have improved dramatically over the last few years and the population is dominated by larger fish! 4lb trophy fish should be caught with more than 50% of the sample over 15. Catfish Good The channel catfish is doing well and had high numbers of fish over 24. Flathead population is good and Blue catfish are starting to get established in the reservoir with supplemental stockings. Largemouth Bass Fair The largemouth bass population has been expanding the last few years. Most bass are located in the southern coves of the reservoir with McIntyre Cove typically the best.
6 P A G E 6 ORMS: A New Way to Reserve! Outdoor Recreation Management System: Last spring, the Parks Division launched our Outdoor Recreation Reserving a campsite ahead is quick and easy and ensures having a site for the duration of your stay. Management System (ORMS). Though often called a reservation system, ORMS is much more. It allows users to reserve campsites from the comfort of their home computers or look online to see a photo of each campsite and whether or not that site is rented. ORMS, in most cases, saves our customers time and money. Park staff can look within the system to see what sites are full and just go to who is on that site. This makes emergency notifications much faster. Staff can mark sites that have issues as unavailable, such as off-line breakers or broken hydrants, and put them back online as they are repaired. For the first time, we will have data at our fingertips that tells us what sites are rented most often and which ones see little use, enabling us to make management decisions about how many sites need upgrades or which campgrounds need a change in use. Reserve a campsite TODAY at Try it; We Think You ll Like It!
