Dit sluit natuurlik mens se persoonlike bestes in. Molli van der Merwe kan beslis trots wees op die vyf persoonlike bestes wat sy gedurende die afgelope jaar ingeryg het, elkeen beter as die vorige een. Varswaterhengelaars kan ook van Evert Laubscer en Rudolph Venter se hengelavonture by die Okavango Delta lees. Rohan Koegelenberg het vier onvergeetlike dae op die Oranjerivier spandeer, waar hy al agter die goeie hengelplekke aangedryf het. Soutwaterhengelaars kan by Manie Combrinck aansluit waar hy ons van Wayne Biljoen se suksesvolle dag op sy kajak by Cape Vidal vertel. Hierdie maand kan jy ook van jou medehengelaars se wonderlike ervarings en uitsonderlike vangste lees. Die deelnemers aan die 30ste Gamtoos-boothengeltoernooi het die meeste van hierdie vier-dag-kompetisie naby Port Elizabeth gemaak. Ons wens ook vir Coen Zeelie geluk met sy vangs tydens die Suid- Afrikaanse kampioenskap. Hy het in die kategorie vir siggestremdes deelgeneem. Hierdie maand skop ons ŉ nuwe reeks oor die teiken van spesifieke spesies af en Chris Nolan vertel ons hoe om vir bronze bream te hengel. Tot volgende jaar, lekker hengel! LOOKING BACK AT A SUCCESSFUL YEAR As the year draws to an end, it is always satisfying to look back and revel in one s achievements, including one s personal bests. Someone who certainly has several of these to boast of is Molli van der Merwe, who achieved no more than five personal bests during the year: each one an improvement on the last. Freshwater anglers can also read about the adventures of Evert Laubscher and Rudolph Venter, who went fishing in the Okavango Delta, and Rohan Koegelenberg who went drifting the Orange River for the adventure of a lifetime. Saltwater anglers, on the other hand, can join Manie Combrinck as he tells us about Wayne Biljoen s successful day on his kayak in Cape Vidal. This month, you can also read about some of the wonderful experiences of your fellow readers and fishing enthusiasts as they brag about their catches. The participants in the 30th Gamtoos Boat Angling Tournament made the most of this annual four-day competition near Port Elizabeth, and we congratulate Coen Zeelie on his catch during the South African championships, in which he participated in the category for sight-impaired anglers. The problem is not the utilisation of the fish resource, but the uncontrolled eradication of fish populations in our dams and rivers.

Reports of unlawful gill nets by angry anglers are on social media every day. The problem is not the utilisation of the fish resource, but the uncontrolled eradication of fish populations in our dams and rivers. 1 One can only utilise a resource if it has the capacity in terms of size and the right fish species diversity. Unfortunately, gill nets are very much a non-selective method of utilisation, and fish caught in the nets are doomed to death because of the injuries sustained in the nets. Therefore, if there are protected fish species in the aquatic system, gill-netting may entirely eradicate that species from that system. Furthermore, if permits to net fish are to be issued, the policing of the permits is absolutely essential. Sustainable utilisation is one of the requirements for biodiversity. Taking all these factors into consideration, sustainable fishing by subsistence anglers and sport anglers, instead of commercial netting, appears to be the solution to support the economy and provide for the needy. This statement is backed by well-founded research. The war against unlawful gill nets is mainly fought by concerned anglers removing these nets, very often risking their own lives in doing so. Eco-Care Trust, a well-known environmental non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the angling community, attempts to work together with the authorities in anti-gill net projects. At many dams, it is too dangerous to conduct a gill net removal project without the necessary back-up from the South African Police Service (SAPS) Water Wing or nature conservation officers. Recently, Eco-Care Trust did a follow-up removal of gill nets and a fish species count at Vaalkop Dam. The operation was supported by North West Parks Board, with rangers assisting from the banks, while Eco-Care volunteers took out unlawful gill nets. It is disturbing to see how often abandoned gill nets with huge numbers of dead and rotten fish, and even birds, are found in these areas. Unfortunately, it is impossible for Eco-Care Trust to remove the gill nets on a full-time basis, due to a lack of funds and staff. The numbers of unlawful gill nets is disturbing. Obviously, there is a good market for the resource, and it is clear that big syndicates are involved in supplying the gill nets and selling the fish. Unfortunately, sustainability is not part of these business endeavours. Notwithstanding good legislation, there appears to be no political will to act against unlawful gill net operators and the syndicates behind the operations. In the rare case of arrests being made, the accused very often (literally) get off the hook with a warning or a small fine. Vissermanne wat mors Theo Venter van Pretoria skryf: Tydens ons vakansie in die Vleesbaaiomgewing in die Wes-Kaap, het ek en my gesin vir oulaas op die strand gaan stap voor die lang pad terug na Pretoria. Daar was baie vissermanne op die strand en ons was geskok om te sien hoe min respek hulle vir die omgewing en die natuur het. Ons begin toe om die gemors op te tel en kom toe op dié bondeltjie bene af wat in lyn verstrengel was (sien foto regs), asook talle bierbottels, geroesde hoeke en ou aas in plastieksakkies. Los asseblief die strand soos wat julle dit gekry het sodat ander mense dit ook kan geniet en die visse en voëls nie verstrengel en vergiftig word in die rommel wat julle agter laat nie. Francois Viljoen van Silverton skryf: Ek het besluit om na die lang winter verlof in te sit om te gaan hengel. Die omstandighede was moeilik en die maan was vol. Ons het in die Vaalrivier op privaateiendom in Orkney naby Stilfontein gehengel. Dit het moeilik gegaan en die visse was maar stil. Ek het vir my van Supercast se gewone mieliebom aangemaak en op ŉ Rietvleistrop gesit. Op my Daiichi-hoek het ek ŉ klein Supercast Juana Oozer gesit. Ek het agteraan n degie opgesit wat ek self aangemaak het en Dynamic Baits se witsjokoladedip daarop gesit. Ek het van dieselfde dip op die mieliebol gesit. Ek het my lyn toe lekker diep in die stiller water ingekry. Ek was op soek na ŉ mooi karp en net daar het my geluk op die oggend van 8 September gedraai. Dit was om en by 09:00 en ek wou ŉ slapie maak op my kampstoel. Net toe ek lekker gemaklik raak, het my lyn begin hardloop. Min wetende dat ek my droomvis gaan vang, het ek toe vasgekap en die beste geveg van my hengelloopbaan beleef. Dit was ŉ grootbekgeelvis. Ek kon my oë nie glo nie. Ek was op daardie stadium alleen en moes sorg dat ek alles reg doen om die vis te kon land. Ek het toe vinnig geleer hoe my foon se stophorlosie werk, want so ŉ vis verdien om gesien en waardeer te word. Ek het hom toe gou geweeg en hy het ŉ ongelooflike 7.64 kg geweeg. My 0.35 mm-kingfisher Giant Abrasion-lyn (9.1 kg) het die vis gemaklik ingebring. Met my hart wat toe nog vinnig van opwinding klop, het ek my droomvis toe vrygelaat dat hy nog groter kan word en sodat iemand anders dalk eendag so gelukkig kan wees soos ek om hom te kan vang. A wonderful experience Cavin Kayser from Blanco writes: I caught this sublime specimen in a private dam near George Airport. Prior to this beauty, I had caught several good ones on soft worm baits. After the wind picked up, I had no success for about an hour, so I decided to switch to a small jerkbait. At sunset, this monster came out of nowhere and nearly snapped my line. It was the first and only time I had to loosen drag for a bass. The bass weighed a whopping 4.7 kg and was released happily into the dark water from whence it had come.
