The Eforcemet Sectio patrols Alabama s coastal waters, eforcig state ad federal laws ad regulatios relatig to the coservatio ad protectio of marie resources. Officers also eforce laws ad regulatios relatig to boatig safety, hutig ad freshwater fishig, coduct search ad rescue missios, ad participate i drug iterdictio operatios. The daily creel limit is the umber of a particular sport fish species you may keep i oe day s fishig. You may be checked o your vessel or upo reachig shore by MRD to make sure you have complied with the creel limit. Officers are cross-traied ad deputized with NOAA Office of Law Eforcemet ad the U.S. Departmet of Homelad Security. They cooperate extesively with these ad other federal ad state agecies i the coordiatio of cooperative eforcemet operatios, ivestigative fisheries eforcemet activities, traiig, public safety ad other atural resource issues. MRD s successful Coastwatch program trais voluteers to recogize ad report violatios of fishery laws ad regulatios. MRD s fishery biologists iterview recreatioal aglers at public ad private boat ramps. These surveys collect data ecessary for the developmet of stock aalyses of various species ad for the formulatio of creel ad size limits. Public boat ramps alog the coast are costructed ad maitaied by MRD. Oyster reef ehacemet programs are fuded with moey received from the sale of oyster tags ad from various federal resource restoratio grats. These programs plat oyster cultch material (oyster shell, clam shell, ad small limestoe rock) o Alabama s public oyster reefs. The Marie Resources Divisio strives to preserve ad improve all ative marie species for future geeratios to ejoy. Research is coducted both ishore ad offshore to uderstad populatio chages. Over, square miles of artificial reef bottom becko Alabama s offshore aglers. Persoel ispect ad permit all materials beig used to create artificial reefs withi Alabama s artificial reef areas. Additioally, 36 ishore fishig reefs are located i coastal waters for easy agler access. The Marie Resources Divisio promotes the stewardship ad ejoymet of Alabama s atural resources to esure that future geeratios will be able to ejoy them. Public educatio is key i maitaiig Alabama s marie eviromet i a healthy ad viable state. The most effective mechaism for acquirig a iformed adult populatio is to start the educatio process at a early age. Southeast Area Moitorig ad Assessmet Program samples are take by regioal participats i this state/federal moitorig ad assessmet program to produce data o all fisheries stocks i the Gulf of Mexico ad iteral state waters. This samplig icludes assessmet of shrimp, groudfish, plakto, reef fish ad the collectio of hydrological data.

3 Alabama Saltwater Recreatioal Fishig Liceses A saltwater fishig licese is required for all persos fishig or possessig fish i saltwater areas of Alabama. Residets ad oresidets uder the age of 6 are exempt. Residets age 65 ad over are exempt. Residets may fish from a licesed public fishig pier i the iside waters without purchasig a fishig licese. Aual ad seve-day trip liceses are available for residets ad o-residets. Note: Aual liceses expire August 3 of each year. 14 Commoly Caught Alabama Reef Fishes GRAY SNAPPER (BLACK/MANGROVE) This is oe of the few sappers foud i shallow estuarie waters. GRAY TRIGGERFISH The gray triggerfish is a wide-ragig fish i the wester Atlatic. It is a very fie food fish, ad is also a valuable commercial species. VERMILION SNAPPER (BEELINER) This sapper favors rocky reefs i moderate to deep shelf areas. Groups amass o flatter tops of reefs or alog getler slopig reefs, avoidig steep drop-offs ad ledges. ATLANTIC SPADEFISH Spadefish are superb eatig, ad whe the right spot is foud alog with a school i the right mood, a ice catch of poud-weight spadefish is a real possibility. COBIA (LING) Cobia are attracted to large objects, icludig buoys, ships, sharks, turtles, ad giat rays. This fish has may commo ames icludig cobia, cabio, lig, lemo fish ad crabeater. SHEEPSHEAD Oe of the largest members of the porgy family, sometimes exceedig feet ad pouds. Though difficult to clea, its mild flavor rates high o the list of Gulf fishes. The gray-black vertical bars o its side make it easy to idetify. TRIPLETAIL (BLACKFISH) Oe way to catch is by usig log cae poles ad live bait, lowerig the bait withi a perimeter of piligs, buoys or other obstructios. If othig strikes i a few miutes, it s o the ext spot. SPANISH MACKEREL Spaish mackerel are fast-movig, voracious predators favorig shallow shelf waters. Sardies, especially achovies, are their mai staple, ad their presece ad abudace is ofte reflected by that of the achovy schools. SAND & SILVER SEATROUT (WHITE TROUT) Small for sportfish, usually toppig out at about 4 to 6 iches, ad a couple of pouds, they are highly regarded for their sportig ature ad flesh quality. Lumped together, they are kow locally as white trout. BLUEFISH Blues prefer shallow water ear drop-offs from shoals ad baks ad are especially susceptible to flashy lures ad spoos. Because they rely o vicious rapid first strikes to dismember their prey, they are oted as heavy hitters o artificial lures.
