Vernalpoolfairyshrimpoccurinavarietyofseasonalpooltypesincludingsmallclearpools,largerturbid alkalinepools,sandstonerockpools,grassypoolsandoccasionallyinartificialdepressionsthatholdwater longenoughduringthewintermonths. Assessment of Potential Habitat TheDowChemicalCompanyisplanningtoaddadditionalrailcarparkingatoneoftwopotentiallocationson thepittsburg,californiaplant.onelocationwouldbeinaleveledopengravelareaonthewestsideofthe monohfillsite.theotherareawouldbeadjacenttoexistingrailroadtracksontheeastsideofdowest slough. Shallowpondingwasnotedineachareafollowingheavyrains.Thepondedareaswerethereforeevaluated forthepotentialtosupportvernalpoolfairyshrimp. AsitevisitwasconductedbyCH2MHILLwetlandecologistRussellHuddlestonwithGabrielMasfromDOW onfebruary12,2015fourdaysfollowingastormevent.totalrainfallreportedforpittsburgbetween February6and8was2.86inches,enoughtoresultinthepresenceofsurfacewaterinbothlocationsatthe timeofthesurvey. 3 DuringthesitevisitoneshallowpondedarewasidentifiedwestofthemonoHfillareathatwouldbe impactedbytheconstructionofarailspur.thispondedareawasashallowpuddle,lessthan2hinchdeepin anopengravelarea(figure2).afollowupvisitsofthislocationonfebruary18,2015bymr.masnotedno remainingsurfacewaterinthisarea(figure3).thistemporaryshallowpondingwasnotconsideredto providesuitablehabitatdietothelimiteddurationofponding.thereforenopotentialvernalpoolfairy shrimphabitatwouldnotbeaffectedbytheproposedrailspurintheareawestofthemonohfillarea.
