Facilities for commercial fishing vessels in Tauranga Tauranga is the home to a number of inshore fishing vessels, and is a popular place for visiting fishing vessels and aquaculture vessels. Tauranga City Council provides a number of facilities across the city to support the fishing and aquaculture industries within the Bay. These facilities range from public wharves offering short or long term berthage, through to areas for offloading of catch and loading of ice, as well as onshore vessel maintenance facilities.
Fisherman s Wharf casual unloading area Fisherman s Wharf Tauranga City Council owns and operates a wharf close to the city, in Dive Crescent. Fisherman s Wharf is suitable for vessels that have folding masts or are able to safely navigate under the Harbour Bridge. This wharf provides both long term berthage and a location for unloading of catch. The wharf is home to seven vessels and is adjacent to one of the city s famous fish and chip shops. The access way to the wharf includes a reserved area to the wharf edge for casual unloading of fish. There is a load limit of 12 tonnes on this wharf.
Tauranga Harbour Marine Precinct and Bridge Wharf Ice plant and casual catch unloading area To the north of the precinct, a modern concrete wharf equipped with an ice plant is managed by Tauranga City Council. The wharf is accessible to fishing vessels to load ice and unload fish. Booking is required to ensure the wharf is available for use. Please call BOOKINGS ( ) to make a reservation. Tauranga Harbour Marine Precinct The Marine Precinct on Sulphur Point is currently under construction. This project will see the development of a vessel maintenance facility. Aside from providing on-land maintenance facilities, the Marine Precinct is the home to Tauranga s largest deep water wharf adjacent to the harbour crossing. An independent fishing vessel taking on ice at the Marine Precinct Fishing Wharf
Bridge Wharf The Bridge Wharf is Tauranga City Council s largest deep water wharf, capable of accommodating 14 vessels of up to 60 metres in length and up to 6 metres in draft. The wharf has some long term tenants, but the majority of its berths are available for casual berthage during the year. A number of improvements and upgrades have been completed to the wharf during 2015 and 2016 with individual electricity and water service pedestals installed to service all the berths, providing electricity between 16 and 125 amps. In early 2016 the mooring bollards were upgraded to provide an improved method of mooring at the wharf. During the summer of 2016 Tauranga City Council will be upgrading the pier and extending the two finger piers to the west. These two longer piers currently provide berthage for vessels up to 30 metres in length. The two finger piers were upgraded in One of the two finger piers at Bridge Wharf
Questions and Answers Q. Where can a fishing vessel berth in Tauranga? A. Fishing vessels can seek short term overnight berthage at the Bridge Wharf. Q. Where can fishing vessels load ice in Tauranga? A. If fishing vessels are fishing for Sanford, they can use their Ice Plant. If the vessel is an independent fishing vessel, they can load ice at the Marine Precinct Fishing Wharf. To arrange this, skippers need to make a reservation by calling BOOKINGS ( ). Q. What does it cost to berth at the Bridge Wharf per day? A. The current overnight rental is set at $1.60 per metre of vessel length per night. Water is included, and electricity is charged based upon a day rate for the specific amperage of electricity selected. Q. How do I make a reservation at the Bridge Wharf? A. Call BOOKINGS ( ) during business hours to enquire about availability and make a reservation. Q. How does a vessel make a reservation at the Fisherman s Wharf? A. Vessels can enquire about the availability of a berth for lease by calling the TCC call centre on and asking to speak to the Property Manager responsible for the wharf area. Currently the wharf is full and a waiting list exists.
