They spend most of their time eating and walking around. Cows are helpful to humans. They give us milk and beef. In parts of the American West, however, cows are alien invaders. For many years, cows have grazed, or eaten grass, on public lands in the western United States. In some places, they drive out native animals such as elk. Cows sometimes eat the same food as elk. So the elk must go to other places for food. Cows also wipe out plants. Sometimes too many cows live in one place. They eat almost everything that grows there. After a while, few plants are left. Cows can even damage streams. As they walk to a stream to drink, cows trample its banks. Cows also eat plants that grow nearby. Without plants to hold the soil in place, the stream gets muddy when it rains. Muddy water can harm the fish that live there. Some people want to solve these problems. One way is to keep cows off public lands. Another way is to reduce the number of cows. Both of these ideas might help.

Lake Michigan is one of America s Great Lakes. It is home to many different kinds of fish. Asian carp come from China. They can grow up to 110 pounds. They can reach more than four feet in length. These big fish are also big eaters. They steal food from native fish. So they are not welcome in Lake Michigan. Many people have jobs in the fishing industry on Lake Michigan. Other people like to fish there for fun. The Asian carp could ruin this big business. How did Asian carp get so close to Lake Michigan? More than 30 years ago, people brought these fish to the United States. Carp like to eat weeds and algae. So people used the fish to clean ponds near the Mississippi River. When these fish got into the river, they spread quickly. They moved from the Mississippi River into other rivers. In some places, Asian carp killed off native fish. They also harmed other plants and animals in the rivers. What is being done to keep the Asian carp out of Lake Michigan? The U.S. government has built huge fish barriers. These electric fences hold back the carp. So far, the barriers have been working. But many people are worried. They fear that the Asian carp will swim into Lake Michigan before long.
