Fishing Oldfield s Ponds Your Expert Guide to Fishing the Ponds of Oldfield Club, Okatie, SC Welcome! Welcome to Fishing Oldfield s Ponds! With excellent direction from Oldfield s own Naturalist and Director of Outfitter s Center Marvin Bouknight, a group of members including Steve Rayda, Tom Sferlazzo, Bruce Berger, David Davis, Sam Moschella, Don Hartrick and Fred Church, created this online guidebook in order to provide a pond fishing source for all Oldfield fisher-persons, members and guests. We invite you to use this comprehensive guide to our ponds and to share your fishing experiences with us. So, here s to many Oldfield tight lines and good times!
Fishing Oldfield s Ponds An Introduction Welcome to our Fishing book. We expect, over time, that the material in this book will be augmented and improved more versions that deal with: The management of our ponds The individual coverage of each major species of fish found in our ponds Pond mapping including depths and fishing hot spots of our best ponds Fishing tips from our local experts Fishing reports, recipes and photos of catches supplied by resident fisher-persons
Pond Philosophy A Forward and Pond Philosophy from Marvin Bouknight, Oldfield Naturalist and Director of the Outfitter s Center Oldfield Club is a private gated community located along the banks of the Okatie River in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. With over 800 acres of diverse habitat, Oldfield Club has an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna that includes endangered wood storks, bald eagles, red foxes, otters and many species of songbirds. Within this acreage, numerous ponds have been created throughout the property for the purpose of handling storm water and surface runoff created by both natural rainfall as well as for the purposes of both residential and commercial property irrigation runoff from yards, common areas and our Audubon International golf course. These ponds vary in both depth and shape, with some being small ponds on less than an acre to twelve (12) acres in size. The shoreline of these ponds is also variable: some have clear access to the water s edge; some have planted vegetation for the purpose of controlling erosion of the pond banks; others have a vegetated shoreline that naturally occurs. Although these ponds are not natural bodies of water, they have become naturalized since their initial construction and have gone through a series of successional changes brought about by age, water quality, biomass load and an increase in both aquatic vegetation and aquatic organisms such as amphibians, invertebrates, crustaceans and vertebrates that include fish. Many of the ponds cannot maintain a natural balance that would create maximum fishing opportunities, so Oldfield Club stocks and maintains many of the ponds for recreational enjoyment of the members. The management of these ponds not only includes stocking and managing the fisheries, but also managing the aquatic health of the ponds with management methods that benefit the stocked populations. Aquatic health management includes the management of desirable fish species, but also to strike a balance of necessary biotic and abiotic components to maximize the benefits of managing a fishery for recreation. Biotic components are the living components of a fishery that includes the aquatic plants, nongame and game species of fish and the aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates found in the ponds. The abiotic components
include such factors as shoreline shape, depth contours, structure (both manmade and natural) and bottom topography. All of these components are necessary for the successful development of a quality fishery for both fishermen as well as canoeing, kayaking, wildlife photography, bird watching and general enjoyment. Also important to any fishery is the establishment of a quality food chain and through management, this food chain can either be positively or negatively affected. Oldfield s ponds are managed in order to positively affect natural components that make up the food chain. By allowing vegetative growth to extend from the bank to create pockets and areas of floating aquatic vegetation, we create necessary habitat to provide food and cover for prey and predator species. This results in an increase of aquatic insects, invertebrates, amphibians, etc. that provide food for the species of fish that are stocked in the ponds. By allowing some aquatic vegetation growth, we create cover for both predator and prey which results in prime areas for fishing. This increase also provides cover for predators such as bullfrogs, alligators, egrets, herons and other fish predators that help keep fish populations balanced and healthy. The success of Oldfield s pond management plan is exhibited by the enjoyment of our members and guests through fantastic fishing and other recreational opportunities. Oldfield s ponds and lagoons are established and many have the look and feel of naturally occurring bodies of water, complete with the established populations of wildlife that are seen every day. A trip on one of the ponds not only includes a day of great fishing but also the opportunity to view egrets and herons stalking the shorelines, eagles and osprey soaring overhead and duck, grebes and other waterfowl swimming in and around the aquatic cover
The Fish Largemouth Bass Preferred Habitat: largemouth bass prefer warm, moderately clear water that has no appreciable current. Range: found virtually in all of Oldfield's ponds. Average Length: 10 to 20 inches Average Weight: 1-3 pounds, eight pound individuals are not uncommon and several have been caught in our ponds that approach 10 pounds! Food Habits: newly hatched bass feed on zooplankton, switching first to insects and then to larval and juvenile fish as they grow. Adult largemouth bass primarily consume other fish but will also eat frogs, mice and any organism that opportunity allows. Spawning: spawning usually begins when water temperatures range between 65-75F, around April to June.
Oldfield Fish Facts: bass fishing on our ponds is best during the spring prespawn and spawning period. Look for them along all shore line cover and around shallow spots off shore. Soft baits, lipped minnow lures, flies, popping bugs - all good. In summer's heat, fishing is harder. Deep shoreline cover and deep holds are best during the day. fish are most active very early and very late in the day. Sunfish - Bluegill Preferred Habitat: sunfish prefer shallow shoreline cover. They occupy areas less preferred by bass. Range: found virtually in all of Oldfield's ponds. Average Length: 5 to 10 inches Average Weight: 3 to 12 ounces.
Food Habits: Sunfish feed on a variety of mature and immature insects as well as other small invertebrates. Most feeding activity occurs near the surface. Spawning: After water temperatures exceed 75F sunfish may spawn monthly, usually from May to September. The male will construct a nest in shallow water mud bottoms. Depending upon her size, the female may lay up to 65,000 eggs which are guarded by the male. Oldfield Fish Facts: of the several types of sunfish in Oldfield's ponds - all are easy to catch and great training for the beginning angler. Small flies, lures and baits such as worms and pieces of shrimp under a bobber - all work. This fish congregate in groups so when you catch one, others will be nearby. Sunfish can easily overpopulate a pond and since they make excellent white fillets, it is good to consider planning a fish fry after your outing! Black Crappies Preferred Habitat: Black crappie thrive in warm water impoundments moving from shallow to deep sections depending upon seasons.
Range: found virtually in all of Oldfield's (larger)ponds. Average Length: 10 to 12 inches Average Weight: 1/2 to 1 1/2 pounds. Food Habits: Young crappie feed on invertebrates such as zooplankton and insects. At about 7 inches in size, the fish become carnivorous and feed almost exclusively on minnows and smaller fish. Spawning: Spawning in Oldfield's ponds begins around mid February and can continue until the end of April. Oldfield Fish Facts: black crappie fishing is best early in the spring. Look for schools of fish in bays and cuts in the shoreline of our ponds. Best lures are small minnow imitations, spinner and flies retrieved in the top two feet of water. Summer fishing is much harder with fish schooling in deepest cover. Live bait and small jigs worked slowly are best. Think about keeping a few crappie for fillets. There is a reason they are called "the walleye of the South".
Channel Catfish Preferred Habitat: Channel cats thrive in most all of Oldfield's large to medium sized ponds. Range: Channel cats are found in open water but tend to concentrate near outlets and pond corners or ends. Average Length: 16 inches Average Weight: 1 to 3 pounds, though some up to 30 inches and in excess of 10 pounds have been landed. Food Habits: These cats feed on nearly all aquatic life such as insects, amphipods and other fish. Spawning: Spawning in Oldfield's ponds occurs from May to July when the water temperature is approximately 70-80F. Nests are constructed by the male below undercut pond banks or under logs or other structure. The nest is guarded by the male for some time after the eggs hatch.
Oldfield Fish Facts: Channel catfish are usually caught as an accidental catch by bass fishermen. This is a pity because the species is an excellent sport fish and the abundant larger fish in our ponds are great fun on light tackle. For whatever reason, larger fish congregate in select areas and when you find a hot spot it will likely be productive through out the year. Channel cat fillets are outstanding table fare and keeping a few will help reduce the populations and make a healthier, thriving pond environment. Common Carp Preferred Habitat: Warm standing water. Prefer soft mud bottoms. Range: Carp are mainly found in our Arrowhead Lakes ponds. Average Weight: Challenging some of our larger Channel cats, Common Carp weigh in at pounds! Food Habits: Bottom feeders filtering out food items such as worms, insect larvae and plant material from pond bottoms.
Spawning: Not applicable in our ponds, carp are stocked to control excess vegetation and are intended not to procreate to control their populations. Oldfield Fish Facts: the ponds that hold carp provide the opportunity to have your hands full fighting a 25 pound fish!! So far in Oldfield, only John Williams of Lakeside Village actively fishes for carp and his method seems to be chumming them in with pieces of bread on the water. Baits used have been dough balls corn kernels, and even a green bean. Ask John for advice. Carp taste much worse than a tennis sneaker, so return any you catch to their respective waters. The Ponds Goose Lake and Little Goose Lake Goose Lake offers first rate habitat for large mouth bass, and in the spring, black crappie. Shore-line cover, particularly the corners and cuts in the banks, should be
fished carefully. The heavy vegetation along the bank can make fishing and fly fishing difficult for beginners. Little Goose Lake There are two (2) kayak slides on Goose Lake and one (1) on Little Goose Lake which is connected to the main portion of Goose Lake by a canal, all of which offers excellent on-water access to the pond. The canal connecting Goose Lake to Little Goose Lake is excellent for large species bass at the weed line. The center of the canal also offers quality bass results. Goose Lake and the inlets provide a bonus in the early spring with black crappie activity. This species resides in the deep holes and, through much of the spawning season, can be taken with small flies and shallow running lures. It is recommended that smaller bass (10-14 inches), all brim and some crappies be kept for the table in order to maintain the quality of fishing in this fine pond.
Four Post Pond and Lower Four Post Pond Four Post Pond and Lower Four Post Pond to which it connects is a brackish watershed that is home to most every fresh and salt water species found in the other Oldfield ponds. In addition to bass, you will find tilapia and channel catfish, and salt water fish such as redfish, black drum, lady fish and even an occasional sea trout! All the fish species and the pond s large size, feeds its connection to Lower Four Post pond with the same brackish water with the identical large variety of fresh and salt water fishing opportunities.
Lower Four Post Pond Lower Four Post Pond offers the advantage of a large golf course and cart path fishing with limited access only on Mondays. This is a fine pond for fly fishing with its open flat banks and its very shallow bottom. Large specimen bass and channel catfish have been taken on flies and lures. The rule here seems to be fewer larger bass with the rare chance at a redfish and even other salt water species!
Big Arrowhead Lake and Arrowhead Lake Big Arrowhead Lake is stocked with all of the freshwater fish found in the other Oldfield ponds and offers both the novice and more experienced angler easy access to the shoreline. This access is enhanced by the two docks located at the north and south ends of the lake. The docks provide access to deeper water for the younger and beginner anglers to catch bass, brim and large catfish. Light or ultra-light tackle used with either live bait or the usual assortment of lures based on time of year can be successful during the early morning and evening hours. Big Arrowhead is the deepest pond in Oldfield with considerable structure on the lake bottom which provides shelter for larger bass and cooler water temperatures during the summer days. The beginner fly fisher-person may also find Big Arrowhead a quiet, suitable option to wet a fly and catch their first bass without catching a low hanging tree branch. The gentle grassy slope allows for canoe or kayak access at the south end of the pond.
Arrowhead or Little Arrowhead Lake Arrowhead Lake is attached to Big Arrowhead via two large pipes going under Pondhawk Road. It offers the more experienced angler the challenge of a tree and bush lined lake with more weed beds to hunt the elusive bass. The lake also provides a dock on the eastside of the lake, which allows the younger anglers access to the deeper part of the lake. Remember that the docks are for fishing and enjoying the lake view. Young children must be supervised and wear appropriate floatation devises. As with the other lakes it is recommended that smaller bass (10-14 inches) and all brim and catfish be kept for the table to maintain the quality of fishing the ponds.
