Recycle Your Nets FISHING FOR LITTER PROGRAMME Since 2005, BIM with industry partners have prepared 400 tonne old fishing gear for recycling. In 2016, a further 200 tonnes of old gear was prepared for recycling, including approximately 100T of trawl gear. Killybegs Clogherhead 3 GET A WORKPLAN Join a Fishery Improvement Project? Through the BIM/ Bord Bia Industry Market Advisory Group, 4 fisheries have been identified for the first phase FIP development. FIPs support the development of a plan to improve a fishery over a given time period including vessel, onshore and supply chain based actions. Engagement in a FIP allows producers and processors access markets which demand sustainability and environmental credentials. The aim of the FIP is to meet the sustainability standards set by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). òònephrops; Improvements, and actions to achieve them, should generally be set within a five year timeframe. The net material for the Recreate workshops has been kindly donated by Swan Net Gundry and the Clogherhead Fishermen.

3 Get Certified? If you are a vessel owner, or handle Irish caught seafood, certify your seafood and fishery products to new revised BIM Responsible Sourced Seafood Standard. Fishing Vessel FISHING VESSEL STANDARD BIM has a dedicated RSS to support you with the implement the RSS scheme. 3rd party certification provides verification to the commitment to responsible seafood production. Our team will assist you with: òòinduction/training on certification; ò òmentoring on all aspects of the standard requirements; ò ògrant aid application for certification and other opportunities under BIM s Sustainability Fisheries Scheme. Find out more at the BIM stand or at Co-operative Processors B2B THE ONSHORE HANDLING & QUALITY STANDARD Inaugural BIM National Seafood Awards The BIM National Seafood Awards in November 2016 provided the opportunity to celebrate the positive contribution of this valuable indigenous industry and recognize excellence and leadership across the seafood sector. With regard to the catching Sector, under the pillar of Sustainability, Jim Connolly, Supreme II, Clogherhead. Co. Louth was voted Responsible Fisherman of the Year 2016 and under the pillar of Innovation, Patrick McClenaghan of Foyle Warrior, Greencastle, Co Donegal accepted the award of Best New Fishing Practice. BIM are delighted to announce that both winners have also being awarded certification of the relaunched BIM Responsibly Sourced Seafood Standard. Congratulations to Jim and Patrick and their crews. The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D presented both winners with their prestigious awards. Join #BIMNetEffect and support creativity in the class room. BIM are teaming up with ReCreate, a national social enterprise, to divert certain net materials for landfill or oversea recycling for creative repurposing. Clean and unused net cuts off and clean end of splicing material provide inventive reuse art materials. These surplus and end of line materials from Industry provide art supplies to those who might not otherwise have access to them creating links between an inclusive, creative and sustainable society. To date ReCreate has provided access to 250 Tonnes of clean waste materials that can be re-used by over 5000 children s art, education and play projects throughout Ireland. BIM are organising 3 special BIM Net (re)working workshops with Recreate for children to get creative with netting and knotting with end of line nets at the Skipper show, spaces are limited so book your place at the main desk wasters are very welcome they are a netcessity! Every piece of plastic removed from the marine environment counts. So when you go to the beach, do your very own #2minutebeachclean. The international movement has grown enormously since its inception in Since then thousands of people all over the globe have used the hashtag for their beach cleaning activities. Cleancoasts runs this initiative here in Ireland as well as the National Big Clean in April here. BIM has both listed as a voluntary social sustainability action in the Responsibly Sourced Seafood Old Rope? I don t think so! BIM are launching some new merchandising items for 2017 to support its creativity and sustainability through #BIMNetEffect. standard. So take 2 minutes, or register as a CleanCoasts group like the Galway Bay Inshore Fishermen s Association, take a shot of the litter you collect and post your snap on instagram/twitter/facebook with the hashtags #2minutebeachclean and #cleancoasts and #BIM. Castletownbere Fisherman s Co-operative Society both won the National Green Business of the Year and the Green Seafood Business Award at the prestigious Green Awards Donal O Sulllivan, Assistant Manager of the Co-op emphasised what this award means for the co-op and the role BIM played ; As a business that is wholly owned by fishermen, we are absolutely delighted and honoured to have won the both awards. Waste Management costs are significant for any operation, BIM will be conducting a Waste Survey for the Catching Sector. This will look at all the types of waste a vessel generates and see if it can be handled more efficiently onboard, prevented in the first place, increase recycling or divert from land fill. We are looking for volunteer vessels to assist in the waste survey in three ports with 4 boats in each port. Clogherhead and Ross A Mhil have registered an interest but there is room for more for one more port.
