1 GROWTH DYNAMIC OF THE MAIN MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS IN A STERLET (ACIPENSER RUTHENUS) POPULATION REARED INTO RECIRCULATING AQUACULTURE SYSTEM, FROM 2 TO 6 MONTHS OLD S. FURDEAN, D. LALESCU, Sndr Antoni MIHAILOV, A. GROZEA* Bnt s University of Agriculturl Sciences nd Veterinry Medicine King Michel I of Romni from Timişor, Cle Ardului 119, Timișor, Romni *groze@nimlsci-tm.ro Astrct. The Dnue sturgeons re fishes with high economic vlue, nd their intensive quculture shown wide interest from the Romnin investors. The sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) is the smllest sturgeon which could e found in the Dnue sin, eing fresh wter species with mny useful chrcteristics which recommend it s very good cndidte for intensive quculture, in recirculting quculture systems (RAS). This species cn e found t this time in mny Romnin frms, which re rering sturgeons in RAS. The im of this study is to emphsize the growth dynmic of the min morphologicl trits nd the ody indices in popultion of sterlet fingerlings, during 4 months, etween 2 to 6-month-old, rered into RAS. The juveniles of sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) used in this study were otined using rtificil reproduction of the roodfish rered exclusively in RAS in the spring of the yer The juveniles were rered in RAS until the ge of 2 months, when the iometricl study strted. The RAS used for trils hd 3 tnks, with one cuic meter of wter ech, nd the wter exchnge rte ws out once per hour. One hundred nd fifty sterlet, 2 months old, were introduced into the 3 tnks of the RAS, 50 fish per tnk, in tripliction. The min ody trits were mesured twice per month, from the ge of 60 dys to the end of 6 th month of fish life. The following mesurements were crried out: totl length (TL), stndrd length (SL), hed length (HL), hed width (HW), snout length (SnL), mximum ody depth (MBD), mouth width (MW) nd ody weight (BW). During the experimentl period, the fish were fed with sturgeon feed produced y Coppens Interntionl (Nederlnd), with different sizes, from mm to 3 mm ccording to fish sizes. The mount of feed per dy ws clculted s percent of the totl fish iomss estlished t ech mesurement mde t every two weeks. The growth dynmic of the sterlet in the 4 months of study ws very fst, with significnt differences (p 0.05) etween mesurements t every 2 weeks, in lmost ll cses. The TL of the fish incresed from ±11.92 mm to ±22.04 mm nd the BW gretly incresed, from 10.2±2.27 g to ±45.28 g. The other trits registered lso good dynmics with certin ptens emphsized in the pper. All of these llowed the drfting of growth curves for different trits, very useful for sturgeon frmers ut not only. Keywords: sterlet, Acipenser ruthenus, fingerlings, growth dynmic, RAS INTRODUCTION The sturgeons re fishes with high economic vlue, eing considered flgship species for the Dnue River sin nd rel indictor for wter qulity nd helth of the ecosystem (MAIR & MANDL, 2013). In the lst decdes, the six species of sturgeons regrded s ntive in Dnue River hve declined drsticlly. Only four species re still present in the river eing considered criticlly endngered (Russin sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstedtii; elug sturgeon Huso huso), endngered (stellte sturgeon Acipenser stelltus) or vulnerle (sterlet Acipenser ruthenus), ccording with IUCN Red List of Thretened Species (GESSNER et l., 2010; 2010; 2010; QIWEI, 2010). Anywy, these fish strted in the lst yers to hve n importnt role in the sturgeon quculture in Romni nd mny investors strts the rering of these species into frms. The sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) is the smllest sturgeon which could e found in the Dnue sin, eing fresh wter species with mny useful chrcteristics 128
2 which recommend it s very good cndidte for intensive quculture, in recirculting quculture systems (RAS). So fr, there were mde some studies regrding the growth dynmic of the sterlet (BURA & SZELEI, 2009) nd other sturgeons into RAS (BURA et l., 2009; SZELEI et l., 2009), ut for short period, nd generlly the informtion re sprse. The im of this study is to emphsize the growth dynmic of the min morphologicl trits nd the ody indices in popultion of sterlet fingerlings, during 4 months, etween 2 to 6-month-old, rered into RAS. MATERIAL AND METHODS The juveniles of sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) used in this study were otined in the spring of the yer 2016, into recirculting quculture system (RAS) t Bnt s University of Agriculturl Sciences nd Veterinry Medicine King Michel I of Romni from Timisor. The rtificil propgtion strted when the temperture in the RAS where the roodfish were kept reched 15 C. They were stimulted with n nlog of LHRH: des-gly10 [D-Al6]- LHRH ethylmide cette slt (LHRH-A) (L4513, SIGMA-ALDRICH), using single dose ccording with the method descried y RONYAI (2008). The juveniles were rised the first month of life into elongted rectngulr tnks (330 x 40 x 30 cm) connected to RAS, fter tht eing moved into squre tnks with rounded corners (150 x 150 x 90 cm) with one cuic meter of wter in ech tnk. These tnks were prt of RAS s well. The fish were mintined nd ccommodted with these tnks for one month until they hd 2 months old. The RAS used for trils hd 3 tnks, with one cuic meter of wter ech, nd the wter exchnge rte ws out once per hour. One hundred nd fifty sterlet fingerlings, 2 months old, were introduced into the 3 tnks of the RAS, 50 fish per tnk, in tripliction. During the experimentl period, the fish were fed with sturgeon feed produced y Coppens Interntionl (Nederlnd), with different sizes, from mm (ADVANCE, 56% crude protein - CP) to 2 mm (STAR ALEVIN, 54% CP) nd 3 mm (SUPREME-10, 49% CP), corresponding to fish sizes. The mount of feed per dy ws clculted s percent of the totl fish iomss estlished t ech mesurement mde t every two weeks. The mount of feed ws djusted t 5% of fish iomss per dy for the fish with the ge of 2-3 months, nd grdully decresed to 4% nd 3% of fish iomss per dy t the fish with the ge of 4 monthsold nd 5-6 months-old, respectively. The feeding ws mde using 24 hours elt feeders (FIAP, Germny). The min ody trits were mesured twice per month, from the ge of 60 dys to the end of 6 th month of fish life. Ech time, 30 specimens were mesured, 10 from ech tnk. The following mesurements were crried out: totl length (TL), ody weight (BW), stndrd length (SL), mximum ody depth (MBD), hed length (HL), hed width (HW), snout length (SnL) nd mouth width (MW) ccording with the methods descried y BURA & GROZEA (1997) nd GROZEA (2007). The results were sttisticlly processed using STATISTICA 10 pckge. For ech trit, there were clculted the men, stndrd devition, stndrd error, coefficient of vrition nd logrithmic regressions. The dt sttisticlly processed re written into the pper s Men ± SD. Bsed on the otined dt, some indices hve een clculted using the following formule: Profile index; Pi = SL (cm) / MBD (cm) Condition fctor; K = (BW (g) x 100) / TL 3 (cm) Specific growth rte; SGR BW = [(ln finl BW - ln initil BW) / ΔT] x 100 SGR TL = [(ln finl TL - ln initil TL) / ΔT] x 100 Dily growth rte; DGR = (finl BW initil BW) / ΔT 129
