April 2012 Slow Death By Mack s Lure Pro Staffer, Johnnie Candle may be one of the best selling hooks ever in walleye fishing. Mack s Lure new Slow Death Rig with a Chartreuse Red Tiger Smile Blade. Why do they call it Slow Death when I seem to catch fish faster with this presentation than a lot of others I can try? It makes no sense to me. Slow Death started on the prairies of South Dakota. Fishing guide and professional angler Dave Spaid figured out that a half of crawler spiraling behind a bottom bouncer drove walleye nuts. After he successfully kicked the snot out of many touring pros on his home body of water, Lake Oahe, Spaid finally let the cat out of the bag. His rig was that of a bottom bouncer, thirty inches of line, a bent Aberdeen hook (TrueTurn at the time), a small bead and a half of crawler. How could something this simple be so effective? It only makes sense when you think about it. It is all based on the size of the presentation. Slow Death excels in situations where there is an over abundance of bait fish. The action of the crawler imitates a wounded minnow without having too large of a profile. It gives the fish what they expect so it works. Walleye get so keyed in on the right size of bait that they will not even consider something larger or smaller. This is the right size. As with anything good, it can always be better. Many tackle companies have jumped on board to improve Slow Death from its humble beginnings. Mustad has developed the Slow Death hook. The hook has a very radical design, but it has proved itself above and beyond the original homemade designs. This Another twist to the system is the addition of a Mack s Smile Blade. The addition of the smallest size Smile Blade in front of the Slow Death rig does nothing but make it better. The blades are made of Mylar and are virtually weightless. This allows you to add some flash and roll to the presentation without overpowering the spinning action of the Slow Death hook. It is just the answer for adding some profile without making the presentation longer or heavier. The folks at Berkley have also got in on the Slow Death revolution with the development of a Gulp! Pinched Crawler. The perfectly designed biodegradable bait looks exactly like a crawler broken in half. It comes in Gulp! and Alive! as well as a floating version. Don t be afraid to try the chartreuse or orange versions either. Nothing stays the same forever and the Slow Death rig is no exception. I am sure it will continue to be improved upon, but for now, let these new twists on an old reliable help you put more fish in the boat. Page one

RIG A JIG WITH THE SMILE BLADE By Mack s Lure Pro Staff Mel Barr I usually use rubber bobber stops to keep the blade in place, stop knots work equally as well. First thread a stop on to the mainline, (add a 4mm bead if not using a rubber stop), next put on a Smile Blade followed by two 4mm beads. (I most often use the 0.8 or 1.1 blade). Add one more stop if you plan to jig other then just vertical. Note: Make sure there is always a gap between the Smile Blade and the stop so the blade can easily spin. This rig is great for vertical jigging including when fishing thru the ice. It adds a ton of vibration and really attracts the fish. In the spring, and after ice, I recommend slowly trolling or casting the jig to the shallows and retrieving. (Use the second stop to adjust your blade out in front of the jig). snags. Try adding natural bait, or plastic minnow type baits, to the rig for added attraction. You can also put a Smile Blade right on the shaft of a jig hook as Mack s Lure has done with their Smile Blade jig. Mack s Lure Smile Blade UV Jigs Take a Kid Fishing! Cookin Your Catch Mustard-Roasted Fish Ingredients: 4 (8-ounce) fish fillets such as red snapper Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 8 ounces creme fraiche 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard 2 tablespoons minced shallots 2 teaspoons drained capers Directions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. (You can also use an ovenproof baking dish.) Place the fish fillets skin side down on the sheet pan. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Combine the creme fraiche, 2 mustards, shallots, capers, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper in a small bowl. Spoon the sauce evenly over the fish fillets, making sure the fish is completely covered. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fish, until it s barely done. (The fish will flake easily at the thickest part when it s done.) Be sure not to overcook it! Serve hot or at room temperature with the sauce from the pan spooned over the top. The Smile Blade adds a lot of flash to the presentation and helps avoid You will be glad you did! Let s Eat!!! Page two

Stan s Space Sometimes Just Do What You Gotta By Hall-of-Fame Angler Stan Fagerstrom Part 1 of 3 If you ve done much fishing in widely separated areas of the country you ve undoubtedly found fishing regulations aren t always the same. Sometimes, in fact, they are a whole lot different. Don t expect to always to be able to do what you ve been doing for years on your home rivers or lakes. Where you presently hang your hat, for example, you may be allowed to use live fish for bait. You ll find out in a hurry that in some other states this isn t allowed. Today certain areas in some regions require barbless hooks. Besides that, there are often parts of a lake or river that are off limits to all kinds of fishing. What this means is you re going to have to adapt to whatever the existing regulations are. It might also mean you ll find it necessary to abandon the gear you ve used since time began and select something better suited to solve the problems at hand. In a way this reminds me of my days in the jungles of the South Pacific way back in the dark days of World War 11. I was in an infantry rifle company and that s about as basic as it gets where combat is concerned. We were often around water. We were armed to the eyebrows with weapons designed to kill and main, but they didn t provide fishing tackle. It s easy to recall how the sea water was clear and beautiful along the beach where my infantry company was stationed on outpost duty for a time in what was then the Netherlands East Indies---today Indonesia. We could see fish moving into the shallows but we had no means of catching them. Then one of the grunts from Alabama found some used communication wire. He stripped the cover off of the wire, then went into the jungle just behind the beach and cut himself a long length of bamboo. Somebody found a hook somewhere and this guy attached it to the end of the wire. We managed to find some minnows way up in the shallows for bait. As miserable a fishing outfit as that was---it worked. And oh how sweet it was to introduce a few of those fish to a frying pan! What we had done was adapt to the situation. In mentioning this I remember what an experienced walleye angler told me about some of the water he fished in the state of Wisconsin. At that time, and my guess is it s still in effect, there were some Wisconsin lakes that were off limits to trolling. A lot of these lakes held walleyes. It wasn t the walleyes that the notrolling ruling was designed to protect. Some of the lakes also held muskies. Not allowing anglers to troll cut way down on the muskie catch. Trolling, of course, is also a favorite method of putting walleye in the boat. So what s an angler to do on a lake where trolling is illegal if it s his favorite method of fishing? There are ways around the problem. The Wisconsin guide I mentioned told me what he did about it. We can t use motors for trolling, he told me but there s certainly no rule against just letting your boat drift with the wind with your lure trailing along behind. Experienced anglers have found that sometimes even the wind moves their boat fast enough to catch walleye when you ve rigged with these lures But let s face it. Most of the time the wind just isn t going to be strong enough to keep those big metal spinners you may have been using doing their thing. Heavy as they are they re a cinch to flop straight to the bottom at an extremely slow speed. Have you tried Mack s Lure Smile Blades for your own walleye fishing? Lots of walleye experts have. These blades come in a variety of colors and sizes. Best of all, the long wearing Mylar plastic with which they re constructed can be bent to better suit your needs where your trolling speed is concerned. So what are you gonna do? Is it time to hang up the old fishin pole and take up golf? Walleyes aren t easy to catch. Sometimes a change in the tactics you normally use is required to get the results you re after. Not if you re like the guide I talked to. He, like a whole lot of other anglers around the country, discovered there s a way of often getting around the no-motor for trolling regulation. In my next column I ll tell you how this Wisconsin walleye-catching expert turned to some of the products marketed by Mack s View all of Stan s Articles Online Page three

Questions of the Month Have a question? We d love to answer it! Contact us at mackslure@mackslure.com if you have a question you would like to see featured! Q: In the March Mack Attack your photo of the month said they used a jig rigged with a Smile Blade. Can you show that rigging? A: Yes, we have shown the rig on page 2. Q: When I pull spinners I tend to get a lot of line twists, especially if I am in current. I ve been told to use a ball bearing swivel but it still happens. Anything you can suggest? Photo of the Month A: I recommend including a bead chain swivel to the presentation; it has six swivel points and does the best job in avoiding line twists. The Mack Attack is a free service provided to anyone who is interested by Mack s Lure, Inc. We need your input! If you know of anyone who would like to be on the mailing list to receive the Mack Attack, please forward their address to al@mackslure.com. Photos, stories and comments are welcomed and encouraged. Please forward all content materials to bob@mackslure.com. Pictured is Ron Adams, from Shelton Wa., with a trout caught on Black Lake using a bronze & brown Smile Blade fly. I read reports on how slow the fishing was, and took it as a personal challenge to see what we could do with the Smile Blade fly. Fishing was not slow for us. We lost four fish, hooked and released eight, and of those kept four ranging in size from 15 1/2 to 18 inches. Not bad for 4 hours on the water, 11am to 3pm. During our time on the water we made believers out of several anglers on how well the Smile Blade fly works. Wes Malmberg Page four

Let s Go Fishing Ministries Let s Go Fishing Ministries was started as an outdoor ministry to men and their families. Founded by Dr. Jim Grassi in 1981 in Northern California it soon became a national organization whose board members included fishing legends like Jimmy Houston, Hank Parker, Al Lindner, Bill Norman, Uncle Homer Circle, and Jim Balkcom. The vision of Let s Go Fishing Ministries is to inspire, equip, educate, and motivate men to know God more fully so that they can be transformed into a person of great character and faith. Why Ministry to Men? Tonight over 40% of the children in the U.S. will go to bed without a biological father in the home. Using the outdoors as a platform to reach people, Jim (a Mack s Lure Pro Staff member) and his team of professionals have utilized Father/Child Fishing Conferences, Family Camps, Special Kids Days for the Disabled, Sports Shows, Fairs, and a host of church programs to help people learn more about fishing, hunting, and archery. To find out more about this ministry (aka as Men s Ministry Catalyst and Outdoor Connections ministries) please visit their website at To learn more about Jim Grassi go to: Discount Code Place an online order at use discount code Grassi12, and Mack s Lure will make a donation to the Let s Go Fishing Ministry.
