1 Four Mile Run Restoration t Project D.I.R.T. studio December 2016 Four Mile Run Tidal Restoration Project Design Enhancements Final Submission 1
2 WATERMARKS: updated concept, December 2016 In 2011, DIRT studio proposed several options for installations along a section of the Four Mile Run Restoration Project. [See attached Appendix of select documents of previous proposal for WATERMARKS.] To signal the efforts of the restoration, the installation of visible markers were situated along the length of the stream-side path. These markers remain associated with the outfalls from the neighborhood storm watershed to, hopefully, make residents aware of the water from their homes reaching this waterway. WATERMARKS were first conceived as concrete swaths embedded in the path at the location of each outfall. Since the execution of the construction documents, it was determined that the WATERMARKS would not be constructed as designed (documented in the following pages). Previously, the WATERMARKS made of concrete were to have a simple texture evocative of water or plants. They also extended past the width of the path to form a rhythm of thresholds. It was determined that the WATERMARKS should be integrated with the asphalt path and hence are made of a vinyl film that will be adhered to the surface. The necessary change provided the opportunity to reconsider the narrative that could be incorporated with them. Like the previous concept of snags (standing bare trees) associated with birds, the current idea for WATERMARKS is to make the association with fish. Twenty-two species of fish species found in Four Mile Run as well as target species (ones desired to return to the restored stream), will be stenciled onto the WATERMARKS at each outfall. At the largest outfall, a large map locates the dozen outfall in relationship to the stormwater system. Even with the change in execution of the WATERMARKS, the primary concept remains: signify and celebrate the regeneration of Four Mile Run. 1

5 WATERMARKS location map At the largest outfall #3, the WATERMARKS will be six feet long by the full width of the path (11 feet). This decal will depict the location of and number the twelve outfalls within the context of the surrounding neighborhoods. Dashed lines will abstractly indicate the system of stormwater pipes that lead to the stream, punctuated with a bright rectangle signifying the associated outfall and WATERMARK. The depiction of this neighborhood storm watershed is aimed towards residents awareness that they are connected to the stream, albeit invisibly, on a daily basis. 4

Sixteen species have been identified that currently occupy Four Mile Run. With the assistance from a biologist, six additional target species will be selected to represent the fish that would indicate a renewed, healthy stream. The centerline declares the wish: EVERY FISH DESERVES A HEALTHY STREAM. 5
