Mentor: Dr. David Willis, , David.Willis@sdstate.edu Graduate Research Assistant (PhD) 2009 to ) Evaluated recruitment bottlenecks in yellow perch and bluegill populations within Nebraska Sandhill lakes and their relation to environmental factors. 2) Identified the role of competition between yellow perch and bluegill at various life stages and its influence on the recruitment process of these two species. 3) Assessed the impacts of common carp on Sandhill lake ecosystems. 4) Addressed human-dimension related disconnects within fisheries science. Mentor: Dr. David Willis, , David.Willis@sdstate.edu Graduate Research Assistant (MS) 2006 to ) Conducted research on smallmouth bass population dynamics and movement within the Beaver Archipelago, northern Lake Michigan. 2) Estimated current smallmouth bass population dynamic metrics and compared them with previous estimations to better understand dynamics within this system. 4) Estimated mortality/survival rates, recruitment, year class strength, and tag retention rates by use of a mark-recapture study. 5) Located several smallmouth bass nest sites and evaluated nest site selection and nest survival. Mentor: Mr. Daniel Benjamin, , daniel.w.benjamin@cmich.edu Undergraduate Research Assistant (Independent Research Projects) 2004 to ) Conducted research on the reproductive ecology of sauger in Lewis and Clark Reservoir, South Dakota. 2) Used bomb calorimetry, evaluated fecundity, and measured egg diameter to determine patterns of sauger maternal contribution. 3) Analyzed age-0 fish community composition of the Lewis and Clark Reservoir and the inflowing Missouri River, South Dakota. 4) Compared habitat use by fishes throughout different seasons in three different habitat types (river, delta, and Lewis and Clark Reservoir, South Dakota). Assignments involved case studies developed from my M.S. research project and group projects modified from existing datasets to engage students in selecting the appropriate gear for each water body.
