2 How to use this activity booklet For Year 1 and 2 classes, we suggest breaking into groups of 5-10 children with one adult group leader. Provide each student with this booklet, a pencil and a clipboard and have their group leader take them on an underwater adventure through each of AQWA s 6 areas. In each area, we suggest group leaders read the questions aloud and have students work as a group or in pairs, dependant on their ability level. The final page includes a drawing activity that can be completed separately for each child. Next to each question, you will notice a bubble that indicates the curriculum linked skill the question is targeting: Predict Use senses, prior knowledge and available information to make predictions. discuss Share observations and ideas as a group to build understanding. question Pose and respond to questions about familiar objects, events and living things. Research Analyse a variety of texts (signs, videos, speeches, images) to answer questions and build understanding investigate Use the senses to explore and answer questions. Collect data where possible and reflect on results. Express Demonstrate understanding through creative channels, such as art, language, design and performance. What patterns can you see on fish in the great southern? investigate observe A leafy seadragon is a fish! It might look strange, but it has gills and fins like all fish. It also has eyes, a tail and a mouth. Watch our seadragons and then see if you can label each body part: investigate observe Are seadragons fast or slow?

Imagine you are a scientist! Write down 3 questions about the octopus that you would investigate. For example, What do octopuses eat?. 1. question 2. 3 Bonus! See if you can find one. Do crocodiles breathe in air or in water? Research Scientists use magnifiers to learn more about plants and animals. Go to our Creatures Up Close exhibit and use the magnifying glasses to take a closer look at our animals. Write down something you notice about one of these animals that you didn t notice before
