Learners on the Secondary School Credit Goal Path have the opportunity to earn credits through an out-of-school work experience where they may be required to assist people with interpreting and completing documents. Learning Plan Link (Heart- Feeling): Hunt and fish guides often help their clients fill in forms that are helpful when their clients cross provincial or national border crossings. Assisting customers fill in these forms creates an improved customer service experience for the vacationer. Task-Based Activity Description: In this task-based activity, the learner will fill in verify the number of fish caught in each category, then complete Fish Inventory Report. 1

2 Competency, Task Group and Level Indicator: (Mind - Knowledge) LEVEL: A1.1 A2.1 A2.2 B3.2a Overview of Task (Body-Skills) Activity Introduction Discuss with the learner that his task-based activity is for fishing guides to become familiar with forms necessary in their field of work. In northwestern Ontario, many guides have a large percentage of American tourists, who would like to take the fish they caught back to the United States. When they cross the border, they must declare any fish. Although there is no mandatory form, many fishing lodges provide a report form. New Words/Phrases Review the new words that are being introduced. Explain the meanings of the words to the learner. Not all new words are in the new word list. You may need to review additional words as the learner works through the activity. Instructions 1. Have the learner fill in their name and the date on the learner sheet. 2. Have the learner complete the pre self-assessment. 3. Review the Learner Task Sheet with the learner. 4. When the learner has completed the activity, have him/her complete the post selfassessment. 5. After the learner has completed the task-based activity, complete the assessment section and review the results with the learner. 6. Discuss next steps with the learner. 2

6 Question Sheet: As a fishing guide, you interact on a very personal level with the vacationers. Guides will assist with filling out the forms necessary for crossing the US border. Having an accurate inventory of how many fish are in the cooler when a vacationer crosses the border, will make for a much easier crossing. Input the information onto the Fish Inventory Report found on the next page. Joe Merks is from Chicago and he goes fishing at his favourite spot on Lake of the Woods. From past experience, he knows he needs to write down each day what he s caught. He gives these slips of paper to the guide on the last day of his vacation. You are the guide and have received Joe s handwritten notes. Use the following information to fill in the Fish Inventory Report. 1. Locate the place on the form where Joe s name and address should go. Print Joe s name and address in that location. Joe Merks 678 Parklawn Road Chicago, Illinois How many days was Joe fishing? Locate the place on the form where this information needs to be entered. 3. Add up the number of fish in each category enter those into the form.
