Right now plans are to start building a shooting range fairly soon, but there are many small lakes on the property with great potential. The TWRA recently agreed to contribute toward the future of Lone Oaks when its 13-member governing commission approved the agency s request to distribute $2.6 million out of its federally allotted Hunter Education dollars to help pay for the first phase of a shooting range. 14 FORT LOUDON / TELLICO ( Lone Oaks Farms... con t from p. 9) After watching a video about the farm last May, the Tennessee Fish & Wildlife Commission unanimously voted to expand the agency s budget and help pay for the public range on Lone Oaks in the southern portion of West Tennessee, approximately 70 miles east of Memphis. The shooting range, like all of Lone Oaks, will be open for a fee to anyone who wants to practice or just have a good time shooting, said Barry Sumners, also an assistant director for TWRA. We have been told that phase one of construction will create a shotgun range. Sumners noted, however, that several compliance permits are pending and construction will not begin until they have been approved. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is one of the agency s that must approve construction in order for the federal government to allow the $2.6 million expenditure. According to information obtained from the Lone Oaks website, the goal is for the 1,200-acre area to become the national model for connecting youth and adults to the land and using the outdoors to encourage a deep appreciation for the land, conservation, and agriculture. Lone Oaks Farm will help drive economic development in the region by offering a world-class venue for education, leisure travel, special events, and business retreats. Lone Oaks already has a diverse mixture of trails, woodlands, pastures, 16 lakes, 13 residences, and other buildings and event spaces. Live Bait - Fishing Supplies BOAT STORAGE - BOAT REPAIRS NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is announcing that the application deadline is nearing for the 2016 Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Big Game Quota Hunts, the regular elk, youth elk, and WMA youth hunts. Entries must be submitted before midnight (CDT) on Wednesday, July 27. The WMA hunting instruction sheet lists locations and dates for each of the quota hunts along with drawing rules and regulations. Instruction sheets can be obtained and applications made for the hunts at any TWRA license agent, TWRA regional office or online at the TWRA website, Mailed applications will not be processed into the drawing system. There is no fee for current Annual Sportsman License holders, Lifetime Sportsman License holders, or seniors possessing a Type 167 Annual Senior Citizen Sportsman License. For all other applicants, there is a non-refundable $12 permit fee for each drawing entered. There is a $1 agent fee for applications made at a license agent. An internet application is not complete until the applicant gets a Temporary Authorization Number, which is found on the Purchase Confirmation page. If entering multiple quota hunts, a person must pay the permit and agent fee(s) for each quota hunt application submitted. The WMA (elk hunts excluded) priority point system gives a priority point for each year a hunter participates (this year a maximum of 11 points) without being successfully drawn for a hunt. Applicants drawn for a hunt last year will start over with a priority of zero. After all the drawings are conducted, leftover permits will be sold on-line, on a first-come, first-serve basis beginning Aug. 24 at 8 a.m. (CDT). The state s eighth elk hunt will be held Oct , As in the previous hunts, five individuals will be selected to participate. Four of the participants will be selected through a computer drawing conducted by the TWRA. Youth who submit an application for the regular elk quota hunt are not permitted to apply for the youth elk hunt. ---TWRA Application Period for Peregrine Falcon Trapping for Falconry Usage Is Underway NASHVILLE --- The 2016 application period for the trapping of a peregrine falcon to be used in falconry is underway, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has announced. The TWRA will award this permit to the winner of a draw to be held on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Falconers may go to TWRA s website under the Hot Topics section and locate the print-ready application and also view the requirements. Resident and non-resident master and general falconers are eligible for participation in the draw. Completed applications must be postmarked by Wednesday, Aug. 10. This marks the sixth year that a permit will be issued in Tennessee. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded Tennessee its first permit allowing the trapping of one Peregrine falcon for the use in falconry in The population of Peregrine falcons, through state and federal conservation efforts, has recovered enough since their near-extinction in the early 20th century to allow for a limited take of these birds for the use in falconry. The separate incidents involved victims following off a boat. The first fatal incident occurred on the Cumberland River in Clarksville when a 59-year old Goodlettsville resident fell overboard Sunday night when he was apparently trying to pull up his anchor on a pontoon boat. The second fatality came when a 34-year old Knoxville resident fell into Ft. Loudon Lake in the early morning hours on July 4. During the three-day holiday weekend, there were seven serious injury boating incidents and 12 property damage incidents reported. Photo courtesy submission. 10 BUI Arrests Made During 2016 Operation Dry Water NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency participated in the eighth annual Operation Dry Water weekend which has been held the weekend prior to the July 4 holiday since its inception. Operation Dry Water is a national weekend of Boating Under the Influence (BUI) awareness and enforcement campaign directed toward reducing alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities. It is held at the time to give BUI enforcement high visibility during the peak boating season. Reports from the TWRA s four regions indicated 10 boating BUI arrests across the state, the (Con t on p. 22) 21

TWRA boating officers inspected 4,078 vessels, issued 175 citations, 113 warnings, and assisted 94 boaters. There were four injury accidents and three property damage accidents reported. TWRA officials emphasize the use of personal flotation devices (PFDs) while boating in a safe and responsible manner. The TWRA wants all those who visit the waterways to have an enjoyable time. Congressman Don Young (R-AK) and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (D-MI) introduced the bipartisan Recovering America s Wildlife Act (HR5650).
