Mr. Jollay highlighted the local redesign work of Mr. Cupp on the golf courses at Druid Hills and Capital City, but noted his influence on courses throughout the world and impact on the game. Mr. Cupp noted that humor is necessary to golf as it is too difficult a game not to inject laughter into the sport. Each golf course presents three fundamental questions. First, how does the course strategically play. Mr. Cupp noted that this first element constitutes at least fifty percent of one's experience playing the game. Second, how does the course aesthetically look. Third, what is the physical condition of the course. Each of these three fundamentals of a golf course will see changes due to the economic downturn and increasing scarcity of water. 3 Guests & Visitors Our invocation was given by James Brewer-Calvert. Our Guests included: There were no visiting Rotarians Our Visitors included: We had four guests of our own members as follows: Tom Campbell, guest of Mark Treese; Peter Michelson, guest of David Ewing; Rick Shinall and Matt Jollay, guests of Dave Jollay Speakers At-a-Glance 9: David Ku Officers of the Decatur Rotary Club: President - Bryan Downs President-Elect - C.J. Becker Past President - Mark Hastings Secretary - Alan Dishman Treasurer - Jason Conn The current economic downturn and limitations on water consumption will loosen the rigid aesthetic requirements of a golf course. Changes in turf type, limitations on water usage and the economics of continual maintenance will result in acceptance of some brown grass on the course. Mr. Cupp noted that while aesthetics may change, the play will not. Courses will continue to strive for a perfect play, but may no longer look perfect. Such changes will reduce design, construction and maintenance costs decreasing the price to play a game. Reductions in the costs open golf to wider, more diverse audience. While Mr. Cupp believes we will see changes in golf course design and maintenance, he contends that the courses and game at institutional private clubs, such as Augusta National and Druid Hills will not change. Mr. Cupp ended noting his top five courses and warning of the threats to the game of golf by technologically enhanced clubs and balls. Mr. Cupp believes that golf needs anti-trust regulation of golf balls similar to the oversight of baseballs. Sergeant-at-Arms - John Drake District Governor - Roy Strickland Birthdays! 1, Bill Harrison 3, Jim Philips and Gary Sams 4, Brian Cayce 5, Bedros Sharian III 7, Ed Turner The book donated to the DeKalb County Public Library in honor of our speaker was Golf
