NEWSLETTER No th Nov 2017 Dates to Remember 1 st December School Photos 4 th December - 8 th December Charity Week 14 th December Winter Concert EY+LP 16 th December - 7 th January Winter Holiday NingBo International School / sac- nbis@outlook.com Ph: NBIS Book Fair - Secondary Beijing Star Kids booksellers came to NBIS last Thursday and Friday. There was a good range of books, both fiction and nonfiction, and it seemed that there was something for everyone. Mr. Alex recommended different kinds of books to us. We look forward to him coming back next year. In total RMB of books were sold. Year 8 NBIS Book Fair - Primary Recently, a book store from the city of BeiJing came to NBIS on Thursday for a great event: the Book Fair. The book fair was an event in which the classes went the AHS library on the fourth floor. There were all sorts of books- horror, fiction, and non-fiction. The Guinness Book of World Records was the most popular book and the 2nd most expensive, but I wanted only one book- IHERO Tomb
Runner. Unfortunately, there were no more copies of these books, so I could not buy any. Everyone was looking, talking, and laughing about the books. It was a good sight. But that was not the end of it. You had a slip of paper to write which books you wanted and their cost. The next day, you could buy the books and they were yours. And what is better is that you can buy the books every year! I personally like the book fair, and hope it happens every year because I like reading books. What about you? By Pranav Jethwani, Year 6A Year 3 Museum trip On Wednesday, Year 3A and 3B classrooms had their first outdoor trip to Ningbo Museum. The students, Mrs Wayne, Mrs Groube and their co-teachers departed from NBIS by bus.
On arrival, we visited the Century of Fashion, Cheongsam Hong Kong Story. Both classes have been learning about the topic Clothes and Fashion, and therefore found this area very interesting to visit. Years 3B have been learning about the silk worm, and were fascinated at the many beautiful Cheongsam originally from Hong Kong, made from silk. Next, we visited other levels of the museum that displayed the people, history, and culture of China dating back thousands of years ago. Some students were particularly interested in how original fans were crafted, and made of bamboo. Also, the extensive process of making pots and bowls for everyday use, made by hand with clay. Year 4 trip Ci Cheng Despite a rather wet day, Year 4 had a smashing day out at Ci Cheng Ancient Town and Museum. Here we learnt how about how people lived over a 1000 years ago. We looked at how laws were made, how criminals were treated, the types of clothes worn and the weapons used. All the children had a great time especially when we said we d bring some of the old laws about criminals to NBIS After lunch, the children got to see the cloths and materials used for making traditional Chinese dress and then had a go at dyeing their own clothes and making scarfs. A great but very wet day had by all.
VOLLEYBALL International School Tournament On Saturday November 25 th, NBIS competed in a volleyball tournament hosted by HuaMao School. In total, three schools participated, making it a lot of fun to play. Each person on the Volleyball team showed massive improvement from the first practice session we had earlier this year. Together we covered each of the necessities of having a successful team. I want to give a special thanks to Mr. Helmy for always believing in us and giving motivational speeches before each set we played, and to our team captain Mohit, who never let us put our heads down and always encouraged us to give our best. Regardless of the results, it is clear to see that everyone had a great day and we can t wait for the tournament next year. By Grace Whittinghill (Year 10) A massive thank you to Lily Fuller, Year 12, for attending all sporting events and providing wonderful photographs of our students in action. By Mr.Martin
NBIS Golf Class On Wednesday, 29th November, a team from the PREGOLF Development Center came to NBIS to offer golf lessons. This was an opportunity for students to try a sporting activity that can sometimes be difficult to access. They were given the chance to practice their putting, one of the hardest aspects of the game, and it was clear that all students were having fun and gaining valuable experience from the session. This was a free taster session supplied by PREGOLF. They are keen to start a golf team at NBIS, which would then travel to play against other teams from other cities. I would like to thank Kai, Dora, Mandy and their team for offering this opportunity to the students of NBIS. GOLFING FUN! On Tuesday, every Primary Class got to have a try at playing amazing golf! When our class went to the gymnasium, it was filled with gorgeous things some of them, we couldn t even name! The coaches taught us how to play golf, what the equipment is called and how to use it. I have learnt so much that I didn t know, for example: a putter is a stick you hit the golf ball with. We got to play golf when everything was ready to go. In the game you are supposed to hit the target with the golf ball. If you do, you get a bracelet for a prize. It was exciting! I got the ball to the target twice! A boy in our group named Maverick hit the target six times! The time went past like a rocket and now it was time to go. I wish we could play golf with the coaches again, and next time, I want to be here for an hour! Annie 5A HOLE IN ONE Jason came to teach us golf. First of all, he taught us how to hold the golf club. We stood inside a circle that
had numbers like a clock. We put the ball on 6 o clock. Then we swung the golf club from 5 to 7 o clock while hitting the ball on the way past. We were hitting the ball softly, aiming for the target trying to win a prize. After some time, I managed to hit the target. It was a fun time for all! Mei 5A Outdoor Education is coming to NBIS: Monday December 4th, 2: 40-3: 20 On Monday 4th December, representatives from an established outdoor education company, Indier Outdoor Education ( will be giving a presentation on the residential programmes we are looking to offer NBIS students. Parents are invited to come along to find out more about this exciting opportunity. This will be offered to primary students in 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B and all secondary students. Small Auditorium (Near car park pedestrian entrance in building with world map) Hope to see you there. By Mrs. Julie Miles (P.E. Teacher) Art of the Week Elin Hammarson Yr 11 Jim Dine study, mixed media
Vale Dr Chris Reed. Dr. Reed, the second Principal of NBIS, died in Perth, Western Australia, earlier this month after a long battle with cancer. Chris became Principal after the retirement of the inaugural Principal, Mr. John Turner. He arrived after working in north Asia, having begun his career in Western Australia as a teacher and Principal. He was keen on developing a strict curriculum and adherence to a sense of professionalism amongst staff. Chris really enjoyed his interactions with pupils, especially the Toddlers, and some of his favourite times were spent reading Big Books to them. His stay at NBIS was under 2 years, shortened due to the onset of his serious illness, a fact he made known to only very few. Chris was a highly educated man, and his love of learning flowed through in what he wanted to achieve in our school. He was an important person in the development of NBIS, and I know that he has been proud of what our school has become today. Mackie Eaton, (successor to Dr. Reed, as Principal NBIS) Pink Party It s time for one of the star social events in Ningbo The Pink Party!!! Why not join the fun and help others!
