2 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH FROM THE STATS MAN NEW WORLD RECORD - 50 PLAYERS! The gathering of players on Wednesday 24th October 2018 with 47 in the comp and 3 on Match Play was a world record for Red Caps BOARD EVENTS ONE ROUND TO GO! Monday Stableford Competition FORM GUIDE Graham Collins with a total stableford score over six rounds of 116 (and a low score of 17) looks to have this one in the bag. However, a score of 22 or more by John Francis (111), Denis O Callaghan (110) or Rod Shaw (110) would make this an interesting finish. Glenn Haslam (108) and Peter Denier (108) are also in the running, but would need Graham to falter and make big scores (23 or more) themselves. Wednesday Captain s Competition Roger Henderson was the bolter here and has one hand on the trophy. He has a nett score of 202 from six rounds with a highest score of nett 36. The closest follower are Les Ferguson (211), Ian Spencer (212) and Norm Reeves (212) who would need to gain an extra 9 to 10 strokes on the day, which would require about a nett 30 or better. Friday President s Competition This one is a little closer. Peter Denier leads with a total of 206 (and a highest score of nett 36) closely followed by a fast finishing Rod Shaw with a total of 208 (and a highest score of net 37). Alex Mitchell, Alby Quick, Gavin Harkin and Ian Dunbar are a further 3 strokes back (211), but with scores in the low nett 30 s could still threaten!! Club Champion Peter Denier also leads in this competition with a total of 480 and a highest gross score of 43. However, he is closely followed by Denis O Callaghan and Norm Reeves both on 485 and with highest gross scores of 44. Par rounds by either of these great golfers would see the cat amongst the pigeons!! Graham Collins is a little further back (490), but he is in good form and could threaten. John Hofmann is a further five strokes back (495), but has a highest gross score of 48 and he has had a gross score of 34 (one under) this year. Page 2
3 Eclectic Front Nine BOARD EVENTS-FORM GUIDE (CONT D) The steady and reliable Tom Mellors leads the Front Nine Eclectic with a nett score of 18.67, with birdies on 1, 4, 7, 8 and 9. He is closely followed by Bruce Stewart on with birdies on 1, 4, 5, 7 and 9. However, a number of other players are in the running including John Francis (19.55), Kevin Keegan (19.61), Daryl Stephens (19.69), Gavin Harkin (19.82) and Roger Henderson (20.18) all of whom have holes they can still birdie or par to gain strokes. Eclectic Back Nine As not many have played a lot of games on the back nine, the Back Nine Eclectic is more open, but time is running out. John Woodruff has the lead with a nett 20.26, followed by Stewart Strachan (21.00), Gavin Harkin (21.52), John Francis (21.65), Gavin Harkin (21.42), Tony Gawne (21.66) and John McPhee (21.86). Much harder holes to birdie on this nine, so anything can happen over the next month with drier fairways and more run. MONTHLY WINNERS Date: Monday 1st October 2018 Event: STABLEFORD COMP. 6 Rule Changes for 2019 (to be implemented by Red Caps on 1 st December 2018) 1. Relaxed putting green rules: There will be no penalty if a ball played from the putting green hits an unattended flagstick in the hole; players may putt without having the flagstick attended or removed. Players may repair spike marks and other damage made by shoes, animal damage and other damage on the putting green and there is no penalty for merely touching the line of putt. 2. Pace-of-play support: Reduced time for searching for a lost ball (from five minutes to three); affirmative encouragement of ready golf in stroke play; recommending that players take no more than 40 seconds to play a stroke and other changes intended to help with pace of play. 3. Relaxed bunker rules: There will be no penalty for moving loose impediments in a bunker or for generally touching the sand with a hand or club. A limited set of restrictions (such as not grounding the club right next to the ball) is kept to preserve the challenge of playing from the sand; however, an extra relief option is added for an unplayable ball in a bunker, allowing the ball to be played from outside the bunker with a two-stroke penalty. 4. Balls Lost or Out of Bounds: Alternative to Stroke and Distance: A new Local Rule will now be available in January 2019, permitting committees to allow golfers the option to drop the ball in the vicinity of where the ball is lost or out of bounds (including the nearest fairway area), under a two-stroke penalty. It addresses concerns raised at the club level about the negative impact on pace of play when a player is required to go back under stroke and distance. The Local Rule is not intended for higher levels of play, such as professional or elite level competitions. (Red Caps note: this is no change for us, as we already play stroke and distance when a ball is lost or out of bounds. If a player is not sure if the ball went out of bounds, a provisional ball may be played, as we do now). 5. Removing the penalty for a double hit: The penalty stroke for accidentally striking the ball more than once in the course of a stroke has been removed. Golfers will simply count the one stroke they made to strike the ball. 6. Elimination or reduction of ball moved penalties: There will be no penalty for accidentally moving a ball on the putting green or in searching for a ball; and a player is not responsible for causing a ball to move unless it is virtually certain that he or she did so. 7. Dropping procedure: When taking relief (from an abnormal course condition or penalty area, for example), golfers will now drop from knee height. This will ensure consistency and simplicity in the dropping process while also preserving the randomness of the drop. 8 Measuring in taking relief: The golfer s relief area will be measured by using the longest club in his/her bag (other than a putter) to measure one club-length or two club-lengths, depending on the situation, providing a consistent process for golfers to establish his/her relief area. 9. Relaxed rules for penalty areas (currently called water hazards ): Red and yellow-marked penalty areas may cover areas of desert, jungle, lava rock, etc., in addition to areas of water; expanded use of red penalty areas where lateral relief is allowed; and there will be no penalty for moving loose impediments or touching the ground or water in a penalty area. 10. Relying on player integrity: A player s reasonable judgment when estimating or measuring a spot, point, line, area or distance will be upheld, even if video evidence later shows it to be wrong; and elimination of announcement procedures when lifting a ball to identify it or to see if it is damaged.
