If you need help finding a spot to park your golf car, please notify Club staff for assistance. Wednesday Night Madness We will start up the Wednesday Night Madness weekly golf event on March 16 th. The format will be a 9 hole modified stableford. We will be pro-rating handicaps and then adjusting the points up or down each week as the summer progresses. The bar bill will be covered up to the amount of one billing (i.e. if there are 100 members, the bar bill up to $500 will be covered). Anyone not in the hole in one club who makes an ace will be responsible for their own bar tab. All members who were in the hole in one club last year will be automatically added to the list. The 9 holers will have a mini clinic 10:00 with 11:00. Please call the Pro Shop by 5:00 Tuesday if you plan to play. Thanks go to Cheryl & Billie Boan for hosting the LGA Martini Party in January. The event was one that probably will become annual! The chocolate martini was a huge hit! The kick-off luncheon had a great turn-out. Kudos to the Staff for an excellent luncheon, and to Mike Benner for bringing in the vendors. Our business meeting was short, and minutes will be posted in the Ladies Lounge. So, clean the clubs, go to the practice range, and plan on joining us every Wed. and/or Sat.! Judy Whaley

10 10 Pro Shop Country Club Members, Did you know? Blended Tees are available for play on the course using a mix of either blue and white tees, green and white tees or green and gold tees. This allows each golfer to play from the set of tees that best suits his or her game. Scorecards for our blended tees may be picked up in the golf shop and scores when playing our blended can be posted for handicap purposes. Blitzes are hosted most days of the week to provide members with friendly competition. Currently, we host a men s blitz on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, in which you may play from any of our tees, and a Men s Blue Tee blitz for those who wish to play from the back tees (although additional tee options are available) on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Blitz times are posted in the monthly newsletter and sign-ups are maintained in the golf shop. USGA Handicap access is provided to all golf members who wish to maintain a handicap. A handicap can be established by anyone who plays golf. Once a handicap has been established, the USGA requires that scores be posted from ALL rounds of golf played, to accurately calculate your handicap. Please stop by the golf shop if you have questions about USGA handicaps. What tees should you play? The tees that you play should be determined by your skill level, as well as your ability to maintain proper pace of play during your round. Most men will find that the white tees provide an excellent challenge, without requiring tremendous lengths of forced carries. Most ladies play from our forward, green tees, but don t forget that there is an option to move up to gold tees on certain holes to play from a shorter distance. For single digit men that can consistently hit yard drives, the Blue tees may provide a better challenge. LGA (Ladies Golf Association) and Ladies Play Days are held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. 18 and 9 hole play options are available. All ladies are invited to participate. For additional information about the LGA, please Judy Whaley at CoosawWhaley@aol.com. Locker and Bag Storage are provided free of charge to our Country Club Members. If you are interested in utilizing these services, please stop in the administrative office to notify the staff.

11 11 Greemside with Gordon OVERSEEDING - The Good, The Bad and The Ugly We typically overseed our greens and tees in the fall with Rye grass to add color and improve the overall esthetics of the course during the winter months. This winter, our golf course overseeding did not come in as well as expected. But, we are not alone. The entire southeast has encountered problems with overseeded grasses not meeting expectations due to poor weather conditions. Most courses in the Lowcountry that chose to overseed this year, have reported very poor coverage from overseeded grasses. We need not look far to find examples of what happens when weather does not coopeate. The early frost and very cold temperatures that we encountered, kept the Rye grass from developing. We received our first frost on November 3 rd, exactly one month after the course overseeding was applied. This was not enough time to allow for the plant to mature before cold temperatures hit, thus limiting the growth and coverage on several greens and tees. We heard suggestions to add seed or fertilizer to the Rye grass in an effort to increase the green coverage, however, we determined that that option could have a negative effect on the transition period in early spring when we eliminate overseeded grass and return to our native Bermuda playing surface. The good news is that the weather has not had a negative effect on our Bermuda grass, which is the dominant, base grass on the course that we will play on from late March through late November. And, the only benefit from Rye grass is esthetics. Since the overseeded grass is a temporary playing surface, once warmer weather arrives we should not have any residual effect from poor Rye grass coverage. In fact, the lighter amounts of Rye grass on the course should make the transition period much smoother and quicker. It is always a challenge to apply seed of any kind and we ultimately end up at the mercy of mother nature. This year she was not kind to anyone who overseeded in the southeast. Hopefully with the warm temperatures the course will green up and make for an early spring transition and provide a much needed jump start to the golfing season.
