1 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v AACGS The REGS played a very strong AACGS team at the extremely picturesque Liphook Golf Course on Thursday 6 May 10, after a brief discussion with the AAC Team Captain and Course Secretary the decision was made to change the morning format from fourball to greensomes. The morning session pairings saw only John Shorney and Graham Bingham bring in any points for the Corps and on a more worrying note the AAC had won two of the other three games by the 16 th hole, so we went in 3 1 down at the turn. What was clearly needed was some sustenance and the excellent Carvery provided by Liphook Golf Club really worked wonders. The afternoon session was accompanied by the sunshine which had the effect of drying out the greens and making them even faster. A very closely fought and competitive afternoon session resulted in six out of the eight games being decided between the penultimate and last holes. Wins for Paul Scoble, John Shorney, Graham Bingham and Richard Sandy, were complimented by both Gary Fletcher and myself gaining half a point each. The final tally for the afternoon was 5-3 for the REGS. The combination of scores amounted to a 6-6 drawn match. Considering the morning session, this was a pleasant surprise but a fair reflection of a dogged and gritty afternoon s performance. Post match saw the usual spread of tea, sandwiches and niceties. Congratulations and many thanks to all the players who made themselves available, especially Graham Bingham who stepped in at short notice. 2 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v AGC 2010 A perfect day on a perfect golf course. A strong REGS team held their own both morning and afternoon. In the morning greensomes there good wins by both Sandy/Anthony Smith and Hayler/Stancombe with Jex/Richard Smith halving a very exciting match. 5 solid wins in the afternoon singles, particularly by Anthony Smith, Greg Jex and Mark Hayler plus a 20 foot putt to halve his match on the 18 th by Adrian Bunting sealed a comprehensive win for the Sappers by 8 pts to 4 pts. 3 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS V DEFENCE ACADEMY, SHRIVENHAM The match was played in perfect golfing weather with sunshine and a slight breeze. As usual the course was in very good condition with the greens in particular looking wonderful and playing really true. Both teams fielded teams of 10. It was agreed that the match would be a 4 Ball Better Ball competition in the morning on the Red Course and a Greensome on the Green Course in the afternoon. The secret of playing the Frilford Heath courses is to keep out of the rough and even though this year the rough was not as thick as in previous years, there were still a lot of lost balls during the day! The first paring of Bingham and Smith were playing well together, against the Defence Academy Captain, playing off 7, who was playing very steadily. However, it was Smudge Smith s length of drive and his irons which meant that the opposition were always trying to catch up. Some good golf was played but the Sapper pairing finally took the match 3 & 2. In the second pairing Greg Jex and Richard Sandy started well and went two up and then three up but the Defence Academy s 17 handicapper suddenly found his form and they began to reel in the lead. Soon the match was all square and then the Sappers went one up only to lose the next hole. It was at the 14 th that Defence Academy took the lead for the first time and on the 16 th, with a shot, went two up. On the 17 th in trying to force the issue both Greg and Richard had poor drives and ended up losing the hole and thus the match 3 and 1. The third pairing had a tough match against two 18 handicappers, from whom they felt they should have received shots in view of the way they played. Defence Academy won out by 7 & 5. The fourth pair had a close match all the way round and it came down to the final hole with the Defence Academy winning it on the 18 th. The final pair of Wood and Devenish had a good, well fought match before Defence Academy clinched it by 2 and 1. At lunch therefore the score was Defence Academy 3, REGS 2. After a very pleasant, but somewhat rushed, salad lunch it was back out onto the Green Course for a Greensome competition. The Defence Academy pairings remained the same but REGS changed their pairings to give different partners for the afternoon. It was a much closer competition in the afternoon and all pairings had close well fought matches. It is worth noting that Smudge Smith played extraordinarily well and, without a great deal of help from his partner, managed to achieve a win by 3 and 1 against a pair who played very steadily and very well. The length of Smudge s drive and his general iron play meant they were unable to exert any pressure. He and Scott Devenish were the only two who won both morning and afternoon. The overall result of the match came down to the last pairing and when they came in with a halve this gave the Defence Academy victory by 5 ½ points to 4 ½ points.
4 It was an excellent day s golf played on two excellent courses. A number of the REGS players had not previously played the course, including Smudge Smith, and all were thoroughly impressed with the courses and the set up at Frilford Heath. The day represented very good value. Although the club have made economies in the catering area, a bacon roll before starting, with a salad lunch and sandwiches at the end of the day were perfectly adequate for a good day of golf. 5 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RAOC Another evenly matched fixture. 6 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v REME 2010 After driving through rain on route to Sanford Springs the weather cleared over and we enjoyed fine, although overcast, weather for most of the day. The wind picked up in the afternoon and by the time we finished it was getting quite cold. The morning produced two clear wins for the Sappers and one for REME, although everyone commented on how enjoyable they had been - just as we would all hope at these matches. After a quick lunch - the two match managers negotiated with the club to get out quickly and have dinner earlier [and this was a great success] the singles set off on a different combination of 18 holes. REGS won convincingly in 5 of the matches losing equally clearly in 2. The third loss was much more unfortunate. Glyn Hannah dislocated his should hitting driver off the fairway on the second hole and had to retire [it is important to stress that he has dislocated his shoulder a number of times before, is able to put it back into place, and it will recover over the next couple of weeks!] A quick change into jacket and tie and we were into dinner at 1830hrs an hour earlier than planned. This was much appreciated and the club were very helpful in agreeing to this change. 13 players enjoyed a very good dinner with plenty of convivial conversation. 7 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RLC There were only eight volunteers for the match this year so there was little surprise when one could not make it due to resettlement course commitments. The god thing about playing in this area is that you can normally get a reserve from either Tidworth or Minley at fairly short notice. I d like to thank SSgt Reed for playing at short notice and for WO2 Blow for doing the legwork for me. What a great day for golf, the sun was shining, there was hardly any wind to speak of and the course was in very good condition. Once my team had all arrived safe and sound, I was a very happy man. It just felt like we could win this year, the handicaps were fairly evenly matched, no player having to give or take too many shots. So I was a bit disappointed at lunch as we were only level although the two matches that lost in the morning were both only by one hole. The afternoon singles went very well with five wins and a half from Mark Blow, who had to give three shots to Bill Bailey, which was a good half as I know Bill from my days at the Army GC. The biggest win of the day was from Mick Wood who won five and three; he also saved my bacon a few times in the morning match. 8 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RM 2010 The REGS, holders of the Seaton Trophy from 2009, hosted the Royal Marines on Thu 10 Jun 10 at Liphook Old Course. It was mutually agreed by MMs that Greensomes, rather than Foursomes would be played in the morning. The sapper team consisted: Sgt Greg Jex, WO2 Mark Blow, Lcpl Richard Smith, Ssgts Rob Siddall and Keith Simmons, Lt Cols (Retd) Paul Scoble, Mike Brain and Adrian Bunting (MM replacing Ssgt Garry Atkins (unavailable) made up a well balanced soldier/officer team. The Greensomes completed at 1 win each and two halves and lunch was taken at 2-2. Singles followed and an early Sapper lead was gradually whittled away leaving the last match as key to the result. The final game went to the Marines leaving the afternoon singles at 4-4. Though the RMs had, on average, a handicap 3 higher than the Corps team, they battled away as they always do and I believe fully deserved to share the spoils. The whole day was immensely enjoyable and Liphook GC at its best in all respects. By virtue of being holders of the Seaton trophy it has been retained by the Sappers until the re-match in June Adrian Bunting Greensomes Pairs RE Hcap Pairs RM Hcap Result Greg Jex 13 Jim Airth 10 Mike Brain 13 Jock Graham 11 RM 2 Up Keith Simmonds 5 Simon Cook 17 Rob Siddall 19 Terry Gait 17 RE 3&1 Mark Blow 7 John Francis 14 Adrian Bunting 14 Allan Gordon 18 Halved Richard Smith 9 Snowy Robinson 17 Paul Scoble 10 Andy Stephens 20 Halved Greensomes RE 2 RM 2 Singles REGS Hcap RM Hcap Result Keith Simmonds 5 Jim Airth 10 Halved Mark Blow 7 Jock Graham 11 RE 1 Up Greg Jex 13 Snowy Robinson 17 Halved Mike Brain 13 Simon Cook 17 RE 3&2 Richard Smith 9 Terry Gait 17 RE Adrian Bunting 14 John Francis 14 RM 2&1 Paul Scoble 10 Allan Gordon 18 RM 3&2 Rob Siddall 19 Andy Stephens 20 RM 3&2 Singles RE 6 RM 6 Overall Result REGS 8 v RM 8
9 MATCH REPORT FOR REGS v RN 2010 The match was played on a fine, hot, but balmy day. It was also a day for the Farnborough Air Show which was a good test of putting skills with a Eurofighter screaming overhead. In the past this has been a match where it has been extremely difficult for the REGS to come out on top. We had a rare win in 2008 but lost heavily last year, 7 points to 3. Last year we went into lunch 4 point to 1 down. Ironically, it was reversed this year with our team going into lunch 4-1 up. None of us took our lead for granted and we went out to the afternoon foursomes determined to press home a win. The RNGS fought hard and some of the afternoon matches were quite tight. Dave Quinn and Graham Bingham managed to turn around a match where they were 4 down after nine holes, to win by one hole. The final score was 7 points to 3 in our favour. Strangely, this was exactly the same score as last year when the Royal Navy were the victors. They say that revenge is a dish that should be eaten cold bon appetit!
