2 NOTICE OF MEETING 4 December 2016 NOTICE OF MEETING Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of Members of the West Pennant Hills Sports Club Golf Section will be held in the Club s function room, 103 New Line Road, Cherrybrook, on 15 January 2017 commencing at 1.00 pm. ORDINARY BUSINESS To elect a Committee. In accordance with the rules and regulations of the West Pennant Hills Sports Club Limited, all Committee members retire and a new Committee shall be elected at each Annual General Meeting. To transact any other business brought forward in accordance with the Section s Constitution. 3 MINUTES OF AGM JANUARY 2016 MINUTES OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF WPHSC GOLF SECTION HELD ON SUNDAY 10 JANUARY, MEETING COMMENCED AT 1.05PM. SPECIAL BUSINESS ELECTION OF LIFE MEMBER: A vote was taken to make Ken Meadows a Life Member the vote was unanimous. Ken thanked the Club for this honour. 5 PRESIDENT S REPORT James Tompson It gave me great pleasure to witness the election of Ken Meadows as a Life Member of our Golf Section. Without Ken s efforts and enthusiasm in reestablishing the golf section we would not be participating in golf with the club. We welcomed a number of new members over the year. Denis Bourke s analysis was able to demonstrate that participation in our games continued strongly even though a number of our members moved away from the area and regular players were on holiday in the middle of the year. It is good to see new members joining in and enjoying the games and friendships of other members of the Golf Section we need to encourage new members to ensure future of the section. It is encouraging to see a growing group of juniors and participation of lady golfers at or events. I am pleased to report that your hard working committee has done an excellent job of planning, organising and running the 2016 Calendar of events. The committee consists of Gary Purcell, Vice President, Club Captain and Match & Prize Committee, Vera Dolman, Secretary, Tony Fugaccia, Treasurer, Denis Bourke (alias Jimmy Olson), John Gillespie, Match & Prize Committee and James Spaul who was invited to join and fully supported the committee during the year. We have been supported by Captain Award winner, David Noddy Knott and deputy newsletter, From the Rough, Julie Fugaccia (alias Lois Lane). 6 Congratulations to all award and trophy winners. Our annual presentation and Christmas lunch was an outstanding success enjoyed by all members and friend who were present. I look forward to 2017, the Committee has planned 18 games and 2 weekends away. We will be participating in the Social Golf Club Challenge organised by The Galston Club s, James Roberts. I would like to thank the club for their continuing support of our participation in this event with the Galston Club and Glenorie Club which has a vice like grip on the trophy. I would like to thank the West Pennant Hills Sports Club, Chairman, Richard Hickey, CEO Jason Read and The Board for their continuing support of the Golf Section, it is really appreciated by all members. Thanks also to the club Administration Manager, Keryn Smith, who has supported us throughout the year. 7 CAPTAIN S REPORT Gary Purcell Again the West Pennant Hills Sports Club Golf Section had another excellent year with new members joining and large fields at every game. It is pleasing to see more ladies and junior members playing each game which is great for the future of the Golf Section. Thank you to my fellow committee members for their support during the year and to John Gillespie for taking over the role as the new match and prize committee which makes my duties so much easier. Congratulations to all the winners for the 2016 season and to Jamie Slater, Peter Purvis and Simon Hessey for their championship wins. The Captain s Award winner this year goes to the popular David Noddy Knott for his help in collecting score cards from Golf Clubs, taking photos and the extra bit of help he provides at the games he attends, thanks Noddy. 9 OCTOBER WEEKEND AWAY SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS On Saturday we played Bowral Golf Course. The conditions were ideal and the course was in great condition, however the smaller greens than we are used to playing created some challenges for a number of players. Tony Fugaccia demonstrated the advantage of a repaired hip, pulled out the driver and blitzed the course with a stableford score or 38. Second on the day was David (Noddy) Knott on countback from Denis Bourke, both scoring 36 points. Our accommodation and meals were at Dormie House, right on the Moss Vale Golf Course the venue for our Sunday game. As is the tradition on our weekends away one lucky member will win the Steve Barton Award for a notable event during the weekend. I was a close competition, but on this occasion the award went to Katrina Withers for her strong instruction for activities for the non-golfers on Saturday night, thanks Katrina for being a good sport on this occasion. Sunday morning we had a second attempt a playing the 3 Ball Competition attempted at Nelson Bay. Each team enjoyed the 3 Ball format and spent hours on Saturday night and Sunday determining their winning strategy. The team that run away with the competition and obviously had the best strategy was Denis Bourke, Peter Purvis and again Tony Fugaccia with a score of 89, 10 point clear of the second placed team of Greg Robinson, Bruce Tompson and Ken Meadows. Tony was right on his game all weekend, including our Friday game where the driver was seen on multiple occasions. Another successful weekend away enjoyed by the golfers and their companions. NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT 1. The Golf Section does not maintain its own bank accounts. Financially, it exists as a part of the Sports Club s accounts and is thus accountable to the Sports Club. Its financial data are subject to the Club s annual auditing procedures. This financial statement is based on figures supplied by the Sports Club and has been checked by the Club s Administration Manager, as required by the Golf Section Constitution. 2. Weekends away are not included as items in the Section budget. They are organised and financed by the members who attend and are run on a costeven basis. 3. The actual expenditure on Prizes was up $503 on budget. This was partly due to a change in the structure of prizes offered. During the playing year, 26 players claimed a free game as a prize, costing a total of $1,040. It was difficult in the first full year to estimate the take-up rate of the free game prize. There was a decrease in the purchase of other types of prizes. 4. The budget contained an allocation for the purchase of new shirts and caps. These were able to be purchased for less than had originally been budgeted. 5. The Section budgeted for a deficit of $12,269 for the year, but finished $3,095 ahead of this target. Fields smaller than anticipated, especially in the winter months, were partly responsible for this. The corresponding figure for was $3,059 ahead of budget. Ken Meadows 5&4 MARCH WEEKEND AWAY HUNTER VALLEY The weekend in the Hunter was a welcome return after many years absence. The weather was kind to us and challenging courses being rated in the top country courses in the Australia. The weekend was well attended by 34 members and partners. On Friday afternoon a number of members played a round at the Hunter Valley Golf course at the Crown Plaza. Friday night, 19 members and partners enjoyed a dinner at the 221 Restaurant in the Royal Oak Hotel, thanks to Peter Puerta s recommendation. Service and food was great, mini bus transport to the restaurant was a bonus. Saturday afternoon s game was at the Greg Norman designed course, The Vintage. The relatively low scoring game was an indication of the challenges the course provided, a number of water carries of the tee including the first hole! Noddy was the only player to beat his handicap, with daylight between 1 st and 2 nd. While the golf was on a group of ladies enjoyed a tour of 3 wineries, chocolate shop and cheese factory. Saturday night the group joined together at Potters Brasserie for dinner, a chat and a couple of drinks. Some were active participants in late night Karaoke which did not affect their game on Sunday. The course was in top condition and arguably the best course of the weekend. We were pleased that our lady members joined us to play a 2 person Ambrose event. The winning team was our Life Member, Ken Meadows & Andrew Campbell. The group enjoyed the golf, company of members and activities over the weekend and are keen to return next year.
