VIGSA has raised 870,000 dollars for MS and hopes to reach the 1,000,000 dollar mark with this year s Professional Development Event and January Public Gala Banquet. 5 SEMINAR Title: Getting the Most out of Your Irrigation Dollars Presented by: Tim Fredericks This seminar will provide in-depth and hands-on instruction in regards to all major infrastructure items required for a golf irrigation system including, but not exclusive to, pipe types (PVC, Ductile, HDPE, etc), valves, fittings, air relief, drains, sprinkler connections, and repair couplings. The focus of the seminar will be to correlate the choices an Owner has when purchasing and installing irrigation hardware with its expected life expectancy in regards to what budgets permit. Items that will covered in addition to the aforementioned list is the following: cathodic protection thrusting/restraint system air entrapment piping repair techniques pipe depth, routing, and back-fill materials general flow characteristics of pipes Pipe IDs, pressure classes, and print line identification valve types and optimal performance instruction sprinkler connection types and install techniques secondary allied products that increase longevity of system pump station connections to piping network surge effect and mitigating techniques Tim Fredericks is the Principal of Fredericks McGuire Ltd in Bolton, Ontario. His firm provides full service irrigation consulting specializing in evaluations, irrigation design, tender documents, pump station specification, install specification supervision, and mapping services. Tim has worked in the golf industry for over twenty-five years and has been with Fredericks McGuire Ltd. for ten years. Fredericks McGuire Ltd currently works with clients across Canada Fredericks McGuire Ltd. specializes in irrigation system design on existing golf properties but also new construction sites, racetracks, sports turf fields, and large commercial sites. The focus of the firm s design process is an emphasis that irrigation systems considered as Owner infrastructure with quality install techniques and materials being utilized so that both the longevity and the efficiency on the system can be increased.

8 #1 - Pigments: Their Impact on Turf & #2 - Understanding Abiotic Stress Factors Presented by: Paul Giordano Practical Greenkeeping on a Big Budget #1-Why I Do What I Do #2-The More I Learn the Less I Know Presented by: Joel Kachmarek Giordano is a turfgrass pathologist and Green Solutions Specialist for Bayer Environmental Science in Canada. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University where his dissertation work dealt with the discovery and characterization of a new bacterial disease of creeping bentgrass caused by Acidovorax avenae. Dr. Giordano has extensive experience in practical turf management and research and has worked on various projects including investigating the effects of lightweight rolling on dollar spot suppression and numerous other turfgrass disease and physiology studies. Dr. Giordano has worked in the turfgrass industry for over 16 years, and has held positions at both public and private golf clubs in the United States. He joined the Bayer Green Solutions Team in 2014 where he currently resides in Oakville, Ontario with his wife Courtney and daughter Ada. paul.giordano@bayer.com Joel Kachmarek received a B.S. in Horticulture from Oregon State University in He is currently the Golf Course Superintendent at Tacoma Country and Golf Club which is where he started his professional career as Assistant Superintendent in Tacoma is the oldest American country club west of the Mississippi which suites Joel perfectly as he has become a true believer that golf course maintenance has lost its way and should be done a little more like it was in "the good old days". Joel recently completed a golf course renovation at Tacoma which received one of the "Best Renovation" awards from Golf Inc. in He'll be sharing what he learned from that project and also the many lessons learned from day to day maintenance on a historic golf course property. Scott May is the President and owner of Turf Max LLC and the inventor of Turf Screen. Scott resides outside Philadelphia, PA with his wife, Erin. The May family includes four sons: Max, Gus, Charlie and Henry. Paul Robertson, golf course superintendent at the Victoria Golf Club. Paul joined VGC in 2000 with a Diploma in turfgrass from Fairview College, Applied Degree in horticulture from Olds College and a Bachelor s of Science from University of Saskatchewan. Most recently Paul completed a Master s Degree in Business and Project Management form Penn State university. Over his time at VGC, Paul and the Links Team have completed improvement projects in excess of 10-million dollars. Paul is a life-long-learner, keen to be on the leading edge of technology at all times. VGC is home to many innovations, most recently the utilization of autonomous drones to record daily course conditions and diagnose potential turfgrass stressors. Scott holds a golf course management certificate degree from Rutgers University. Scott has been involved with the golf maintenance industry his entire working life, including 5 years as an assistant superintendent and 12 years as a golf course superintendent. From Scott was the assistant superintendent at Huntingdon Valley Country Club. From he was the GCS at Aspectuck Valley Country Club in Weston, CT. Finally, from he was the GCS at Manufacturers Golf and Country Club in Fort Washington, PA where he initiated and oversaw the completion of a comprehensive golf course Master Plan renovation. Scott began working on Turf Screen in 2006 until its commercial release in In February 2012 Scott decided to resign his position as GCS and devoted his full attention to Turf Max.

10 The Role Of Nutrition in Managing Water Requirements and Abiotic Stress Presented by: Dean Piller Cordova Bay Golf Course has been developing and modifying their management programs over the past 25 years. Over the past 3 years during periods of higher than normal temperatures and summer drought conditions Cordova Bay has been implementing a series of research trials to better understand the role nutrition and water management plays in overall turf health and density during periods of prolonged Abiotic Stress. Effluent Water on Your Golf Course - What You Need to Know Presented by: Jay Leach Water Quality testing and monitoring Warning signs of plant damage with poor quality water Recovery techniques from salt damage In this presentation Dean will review the evolution of Cordova Bay s management programs and share the results of the 2016 Abiotic Stress research trials. Since it s grand opening in July 1991, Dean Piller has been the Golf Course Superintendent at the picturesque Cordova Bay Golf Course in Victoria, B.C. Dean was President of the Canadian Golf Superintendents Association in the year 2000 and is presently the Past President of the British Columbia Golf Course Superintendents Association. Dean is a graduate of Old s College in the Ornamental Horticulture Diploma Program majoring in Turfgrass Management and has completed the Turfgrass Certificate program with the University of Guelph. Jay Leach has been in the golf industry since 1974 and admits he is still learning. A Fairview College graduate in 1979 with his first Superintendent job in 1981 at the Lloydminster Golf and Country Club managing the nine hole expansion. In 1988 he moved to Calgary for the construction of The Cottonwood Golf and Country Club and stayed on as Superintendent until Jay was an instructor at Olds College for two years. Jay is currently employed with the dual role of Superintendent and General Manager at the Morningstar Golf Course in Parksville BC on Vancouver Island. Jay contributed to the industry for 14 year with the AGSA, and CGSA serving as President in both Associations.
