July 14, 2016 July 21, 2016 TBA DG Rod Riopel visits the Rotary Club of Regina Eastview NEXT WEEK July 14, 2016 DG Rod Riopel Visits The Rotary Club of Regina Eastview THE REGINA EASTVIEW LYLE PIETT MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT This was the first week of the new Rotary year. No club meeting was held but the very important Regina Eastview Lyle Piett Memorial Golf Tournament occurred on a beautiful day with almost no wind to interfere with the game. The notes and pictures that follow were provided by Ann Grahame. Thank you Ann for providing an account of the events of the day to those of us unable to attend. Many Eastview members will remember Lyle Piett. He was devoted to the ideals of Rotary. He contributed in many ways to the activities of the Club and is fondly remembered by all who knew him. Following is an excerpt from his obituary in the Regina Leader Post following his death on September 30, 2006 and so we remember this special Rotarian. Lyle spent 39 years at Sears in various positions including Personnel Superintendent and Operating Superintendent. Lyle also served as Director of the United Way, Past Director of Regina Chamber of Commerce and Past Director of Junior Achievement. As a long standing member of the Regina Eastview Rotary Club with 33 years of perfect attendance, he carried positions including Chairman of various committees, Director, VicePresident, President, Fund Raising Chairperson, Sgt. at Arms for 32 consecutive District conferences, Sgt. at Arms at the District level for 26 years, an eleven time Paul Harris Fellow, a Bingo Supervisor for 21 years and the Chairman for the annual changeover meeting and golf tournament for 32 years. Lyle was an avid Saskatchewan Roughrider season ticket holder and spent many March's in Hawaii. Lyle loved life and had a great sense of humour. In the years following his death, Eastview has hosted this annual Golf Tournament in memory of Lyle and as a fundraiser for many worthwhile projects. AND NOW ABOUT THE GOLF GAME..

2 Friday, July 8, 2016, dawned bright and sunny as John Van Koll had promised. The Rotary Club of Regina Eastview volunteers reported to John at 10:45 am at Tor Hill Golf course. Thirty-seven golfers came out, with Tee-off times starting at 11:37 am. Ann Grahame was at the Registration Desk, with John's mother, Dorothy, sitting beside her selling mulligans and lengths of string. President Greg McNamara and Laurel Mattison were looking after the Putting Competition, while Pat Dell, John Van Koll and Allen Hillsden, who had organized the event beautifully, were everywhere until their Tee-off times. All but one of the holes had been sponsored, so the course looked festive with the Rotary wheel proudly displayed beside the sponsors' signs. The day remained perfect for golf, warm, but not too hot with a light breeze and some cloud cover, and everyone enjoyed their game. All were thankful to John Van Koll for having an in with the weather man. Could the day have been more perfect! Don t think so. 3 AND THEN THERE WAS DINNER AND PRIZES After their return to the Club House, everyone relaxed with a beverage until dinner was served. Other members of the Rotary Club of Regina Eastview drove out for dinner at Tor Hill, including Gary Carlson, Jeff Barber with his wife Nancy, and Charles Sadzamare. Following a delicious meal of salads, lemon-herbed chicken with creamy mashed potato and corn, and chocolate cake, Pat Dell thanked everyone for coming out, especially the "Piett clan", several of whom had traveled a long way. Ron has many reasons to look so relaxed: #1 he had a good golf game and won a prize #2 his Rotary year has successfully concluded and #3 he is rumored to have holiday plans. Have a good summer, Ron. Evangelist Bill Graham once said: the only time my prayers are never answered is on the golf course! From an unknown golfer: If I hit it right, it s a slice. If I hit it left, it s a hook. If it hit it straight it s a miracle!

5 Other prizes were awarded as follows: Four participants had tied with 10 points each in the Putting Competition, so their names were put into the trophy cup and the winner of $135 was Jason Speiler. Closest to the Pin: Men: Patrick Masvosva Ladies: Alda Bouvier Longest Drive: Men: Jason Speiler Ladies: Kim Smith Most Honest Team, with a score of 74, was Colleen Laturnus, Linda Helmeczi, Diana Laturnus and Joann Piett (below left). Tied for the Second Most Honest Team, with a score of 72 each, was Allen Hillsden's team which included John Horstman, Melinda Horstman and Jon Kwas, and John Van Koll's team which included Kim Smith, Alda Bouvier and Patrick Masvosva. The Fourth Most Honest Team, with a score of 70, consisted of Doreen and Albert Pankewich, and Pat Dell and Glen Tressel. The Fifth Most Honest Team, with a score of 66, consisted of Ron Okumura, Allen Goudie, Brian Peacock and Brian Svenson (bottom left minus Brian Peacock). The Sixth Most Honest Team, with a score of 65, consisted of Devon Huschi, Josh Piett, Wayne Piett and Jon Piett. The Seventh Most Honest Team, with a score of 62 was Chris Hefner, playing with Jim Goldstone (below right) And..After the Awards had been given out, the winners in the Silent Auction were announced. And so the 9 th annual Golf Tournament concluded. Thank you to the organizers and the attendees. The funds raised will be used for Eastview Rotary projects. It was a fine day of Rotary fellowship.
