1 The Stanley Thompson Classic 2013 On Monday, September 16 th, many of us were fortunate enough to get together at Dundas Valley G&CC to enjoy the 2013 Classic. From the feedback received so far, it seems that a good time was had by all. Even Mother Nature cooperated. While she greeted us at registration with an overcast sky, she gave us bright sunshine for our tee off. (Photos below) Our hosts at Dundas Valley were wonderful. We were welcomed to enjoy their new clubhouse and great golf course. The food was magnificent. Special thanks to Mike Duffy (not that one), a Society Member, for arranging the veal chops. The competition format was a team event using a modified Stableford scoring system. This was very successful. Fun was had by all and the pace of play was excellent, with everyone finishing their rounds in less than four and a half hours. The pace of play was also helped by capping the field at 80 golfers. This was our first tournament without Bill Newton. Truly the driving force behind the Stanley Thompson Society, Bill was a co-founder of the Society and its long-time Executive Director. Special thanks to Ted Baker for his glowing tribute and toast to Bill. Bill is, and will be, missed. The competition format was particularly enjoyed by our winning foursome, Larry Smithers, John Dines, Paul Winslow and John Nelles. Congratulations on a fine round. Winning the tournament in 2013 was particularly special, since the winning team was awarded the Bill Newton Trophy. The Trophy was renamed this year to commemorate Bill and his many contributions to the Society. Our thanks go to Jo Newton, Stanley Thompson (not that one) and Matt Thompson for presenting the trophy. The winners were also presented with a custom designed Stanley Thompson golf bag. The bags looked great and I am sure they will be carried with pride. During the dinner, the Society had the great pleasure of announcing the first winner of the Stanley Thompson / Bill Newton Graduate Studies Scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship is awarded annually to a Masters student at the School of Landscape Architecture, University of Guelph. Thanks to Society Director Kirsten Brown for presenting the award to our first winner, Christine Fraser. Please join us in congratulating Christine and in wishing her every success in her studies and career. We were fortunate to have Lorne Rubenstein as our guest speaker. Lorne gave a wonderful talk and shared his appreciation for Stanley s work. He was also good enough to share some very interesting stories about how he came to make golf his career. As always, Lorne was very well received. Thank you Lorne. Brian Bileski was the winner of the first Stanley Thompson Media Award. Brian produced an excellent 5 minute video that was aired a number of times on television. It is available on our website or can be found on the Society s Facebook page. Unfortunately, Brian was unable to join us at the tournament. This year s Classic was most enjoyable. It was a great chance to play golf, meet new people and catch up with old friends.
