1 WOMEN S METROPOLITAN GOLF ASSOCIATION Tee Talk Beth Lankler, Editor JULY 2017 IN THIS ISSUE: PAGE ONE: 2017 Team Match Recap PAGE TWO: 2017 Team Match Final Results PAGE THREE: 2017 Invitationals PAGE FOUR: 2017 Griscom Cup Brooklake s Special Honor PAGE FIVE: Foundation News This season marked the 71st anniversary of Team Matches. Despite some torrential rain and gusting winds for opening day, still no deterrent to the 900 competing women, the other four matches were played under easy breezy sunny skies. New Jersey again filled twelve series, Westchester/CT had ten series, and Long Island had seven series. During these five match days, approximately 4,350 rounds of golf were played under fabulous course conditions thanks to the hard work of the many Course Superintendents of our member clubs. None of these matches could occur, however, without the efforts of our Met Reps, Series Captains and Team Captains who facilitate the successful scheduling and management of team matches. I wish to extend a special thanks to our three District Captains: Carol Steadman (Long Island), Kathy Flicker (New Jersey) and Lori Ann Cerullo (Westchester/Ct). Both Kathy and Lori Ann, who were new to their positions, did an amazing job running their districts-totally by passing the requisite learning curve. After four years of tremendous service, however, we say good bye and extend our sincere gratitude to Carol Steadman as she is retiring in her capacity as District Captain; she will be truly missed by the Board. Of note, based on extremely positive feedback, the WMGA Board has voted to eliminate Challenge Matches on a permanent basis after the success of our two-year trial period Team Match Recap Meadowbrook (L to R): Eileen Moriarty, Phoebe Timpson, Liz Berens, Wendy Havens, & Ann Enstine Cherry Valley (L to R): Sue Sardi, Diane Edwards, Mary Pucciarelli, Julie Manhanne, & Women s Metropolitan Golf Association Meadow Brook (LI) Interdistrict Champions Yet Again. The Interdistrict Championship took place on Wednesday, May 18th at Scarsdale Golf Club in Hartsdale, NY. While it was a very steamy day, the course Bridget Queally, & Ally Steffen Winged Foot (L to R): Jen Macksey, Jean Schob, Maura Devaney, was in exceptional condition and the staff at Scarsdale made it an extraordinary event. I don t think anyone will soon forget the elevation changes on the back nine! Meadow Brook won for the fourth year in a row, the fifth time in the last six years and the ninth time since It is hard to find any more words to describe their extremely impressive run. Meadow Brook competed with Eileen Moriarty, Phoebe Timpson, Ann Enstine, Liz Berens and Wendy Havens. The five women earned a total of 23 ½ points for a resounding victory. Cherry Valley returned to the Interdistricts for the first time since 2014 with Sue Sardi, Diane Edwards, Mary Pucciarelli, Julie Manhanne and Monique Allen competing on their behalf and, for the third year in a row, NJ captured second place. Winged Foot came out on top of Series 1 in Westchester/CT for the second year in a row with some impressive playing by Ally Steffen, Jean Schob, Jen Mackesy, Maura Devaney and Bridget Queally. After surviving the heat and hills of Scarsdale, the final tally was Meadow Brook 23 1/2, Cherry Valley 11 and Winged Foot 10 1/2. Congratulations to all of the competitors on a wonderful day of match play! Sarah Greenhill Interclub Team Match Chair

3 2017 WMGA Invitationals 3 92 nd Golf Illustrated Competition May 17, 2017 Alpine Country Club Demarest, NJ Editor s Note: Team matches among the three districts of the WMGA were first held in Given its immediate popularity and success, it became an annual event. In 1921, Golf Illustrated donated a trophy for the winning team, and in so doing, gave the competition its name. Originally, teams were composed of 15 members with handicaps of 12 or below, but the number of players was reduced to 10, with one alternate in Today, Captains are selected by the Competitions committee; they serve for three years and select their players with indexes under For 2017, Kamille Caufield served as the New Jersey Captain, Sharon Hoffman served as the Long Island Captain and Liliana Ruiz-Munoz served as the Westchester/CT Captain. With a total of 35 points, the players from Long Island were victorious amongst our interdistrict teams this season at the Golf Illustrated. Captain Sharon Hoffman s strategic line-up, her own solid playing and the truly impressive dominance of Phoebe Thompson and Shannon Boyle paved the way for their earning the trophy. New Jersey and Westchester/Connecticut each finished the day tied with 27 ½ points. The tricky Tillinghast design called for thoughtful shot placement and a gentle touch around Alpine s fast greens. This was my first year participating in the Golf Illustrated and playing amongst this field of highly talented women was a wonderful way to start my Long Island Team (L to R): LeeAnn Lewis, Jennifer Rosenberg, Sharon Hoffman, Samantha Sessa, Phoebe Timpson [Not pictured: Eileen Moriarty, Denise Martorana, Patrice Franco, Mimi McAndrew, Shannon Boyle] transition from junior golf into the many events offered by the WMGA. Being asked to represent and play for the Westchester/CT division was a great learning opportunity for me, as it incentivized me to quickly recover after a poor tee shot or missed approach knowing that my team needed my help. After greeting Denise Martorana and Adrienne MacLean on the first tee, I immediately knew that I was in for two very competitive matches. It truly was a great experience and I hope to be invited to play again in the years to come. Alexis Steffen [Editor s Note: Ally served as a summer intern for the WMGA and will be attending the University of Richmond in the fall as a freshman where she has been recruited to play for their women s golf team. Also note that she earned 5 points in her inaugural debut at the Golf Illustrated.] 88th Myra D. Paterson Trophy Tournament May 23, 2017 Engineers Country Club Roslyn Harbor, NY Editor s Note: The Myra D. Paterson competition, named after a former WMGA President, also an interdistrict match, originated in 1925 and was essentially the same as the Golf Illustrated event except that it was contested in the fall as opposed to the spring. In 1971, however, to enable more players the opportunity to enjoy interdistrict team play, the pool of players was changed to Class B handicaps [14.1 and above]. For 2017, Lynn Thompson served as the Westchester/CT Captain, Jo Finelli served as the New Jersey Captain, and Diane Galtieri served as the Long Island Captain Now available: WMGA Apparel Look good and feel good about your purchase. 10% of purchase price will be donated to the Foundation. Simply go to: womensmetgolfassociation Kudos to my Westchester/Ct Myra D. Paterson team! A fair day in May yielded another victory and great team effort! The commitment of these 10 ladies is unbelievable; whether challenging the Long Island traffic, arriving the night before, or remaining optimistic while sitting on a delayed plane in a Florida airport, they always come to unite as a team with the same goal! Clad in hot pink and khaki, each member of our team fought Westchester/Ct Team (L to R) JoAnn Ryder, Meg Sowarby, Linda Hudson, hard against their competitors until the very Terry Pisacreta, Linda Jenkins, Lynn Thompson, Joan Mannion, Suzanne Dean, Leslie Caruso, Wendy Dominick end! Engineers Country Club greeted us with kind hospitality while providing a challenging and undulating golf course! Who knew Long Island had so many high elevations? The Myra D. Paterson tournament is the epitome of what the WMGA is all about! Competition, camaraderie, and challenge! Well done ladies! Lynn Thompson

4 2017 Griscom Cup 4 (L to R: Michelle Stelban Murphy, Denise Martorana, Captain Tara Fleming, Liliana Ruiz-Munoz, Alexis Hios, Helen Bernstein, Adrienne MacLean, Sue DeKalb, Ami Gianchandani) 2017 Hole-In-One Club (Team Matches) Donna Lawrence at CC of Fairfield Hole #4, 125 yds, 8-iron Lynn Schonbraun at North Jersey CC Hole #13, 122 yds, 9-hybrid The 114 th Inter-City Matches for the Griscom Cup were hosted by the WMGA at the Country Club of Fairfield on May 31 st and June 1st. Teams of nine players from the WMGA, the Women s Golf Association of Philadelphia (WGAP) and the Women s Golf Association of Massachusetts (WGAM) compete in this prestigious event. The golf course was in spectacular condition and the layout proved an even greater challenge due to the significant rainfall leading up to the tournament. The competition kicked off with foursome matches and resulted in the WMGA leading by 1 ½ points over the team from WGAP. The partnership of Denise Martorana and Liliana Ruiz-Munoz led the WMGA by earning 5 ½ of their 6 possible points. Overnight, the area received additional rain adding to an already saturated course resulting in lift, clean and place conditions for the singles matches. The length and stamina of the younger and longer hitting players from the WGAP proved too much for our WMGA players. The WGAP team earned 30 points in the singles matches to secure the victory. The final score was WGAP: 42 ½, WMGA: 34 ½, and WGAM: 32. I could not have been more proud of our team this year, stated Tara Fleming, WMGA Captain and player. Everyone played with such heart and determination, but the conditions really hampered our efforts. We gave them a lot to think about after the foursomes. We sent a message that they better bring their A games for the singles! It was a great showing by the WMGA. Special thanks to the Country Club of Fairfield for hosting the event; the superintendent and his crew did a great job getting the course in shape, particularly after the heavy rains between the first and second day. An additional thank you goes to Helen Stovell for serving as our hostess. Her enthusiasm and support leading up to the event were most appreciated and did not go unnoticed. Next year s competition will be hosted by the WGAP and Tara plans to have the team ready to return the favor and regain the cup from the host team in New Jersey s Celebrates Friendship on Last Day of Team Matches As we shared in our final Tee Talk winter issue, on September 28 th, 2016, Cynthia Guerriero, a beloved and dedicated WMGA Met Rep, member, volunteer and 35+ year Brooklake Country Club member passed away unexpectedly. Her teammates, under the leadership of Captain Ratchanee Benson and Rose Wishner, held a special tribute to friendship in memory of Cynthia on the final day of team matches hosted at their club. A caring and vibrant woman who made her family her number one priority, Cynthia was also a fierce competitor. With that competitive spirit, matched only by her good sportsmanship, she instilled a sense of camaraderie for her team that was truly infectious. She cherished team matches and always made sure that when the club hosted their matches, everything was set up perfectly. This year, on the final day of team matches, a surprise was waiting for all the teams in Series 3 at the tee box on the scenic par three 17 th hole. Attached to a sleek new golf cart, were pink helium balloons with the following instructions to the players: Spring is finally upon us and the last match has begun. We welcome your team to Brooklake s day of fun! Please release a balloon in celebration of someone close, it can be for anyone you know and loved the most. Throughout the day, as the players reached the 17 th hole, one could see the never ending stream of pink balloons flying above the course; each representing a very special person. As noted by her dear friend, Ratchanee, this was never meant to be a sad event but a happy one. True friends don t often come around and when they do, you have to treasure them. There were numerous tributes written by the players on the 17 th and the luncheon was adorned with pink tablecloths, flowers, candles and candy. Players were also given packets of Burpee flower seeds to take home and plant in Cynthia s memory. As Captain Benson said, she was an exceptional person and we will never forget her. We miss her and those that have passed before us each and everyday.

5 Foundation News 5 What did you do with your free time? For 2017, the WMGA Foundation Board of Trustees tried something new; they didn t plan a luncheon for you to attend. You didn t have to battle traffic, get dressed up, eat carbs, or smile for the photographer. Instead, you got to do whatever but we still need you to donate to our wonderful organization or they may have to plan a luncheon next year. So, here s what the Board got to do with their free time. After you donate, please send us a picture to post on social media of what you got to do. Val DePiro was able to play with her dogs. Sarah Cohn was able to do yoga on the beach. Dale Kramer was able to play Monkey in the Middle with her grand nieces. Don t miss out on this gem of a course. Find a friend to play with at the Sis Choate on 9/26/17 at the Nissequogue Golf Club. Judy Cuttone was able to make pizza with her son Giuseppe. Heidi Komoriya was able to finally prune her roses. Barbara Klestadt was able to attend a session at Soul Cycle. Michele Greenfield was able to sit back and finally read all those golf books. Diane Mock was able to go hiking.
