Only PGA Members in good standing are eligible for awards HORTON SMITH AWARD NOMINATION Name of Nominee: Phil Gaggero Member Number: Facility Name: Lake Padden Golf Course Facility Address: 4882 Samish Way, Bellingham Facility Phone Number: Nominee Address: Nomination submitted by: N/A First off, I am grateful for being nominated for this award. It is truly an honor to be nominated amongst all the great PGA Professionals in our Chapter. 1. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the National PGA education program over the past five years (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). This year I was part of the national Get Golf Ready teleconferences with Joe Canny to discuss best practices. Participation was on a voluntary basis. These teleconferences served the dual role of reviewing the successes at current program locations and allowing emerging program locations to learn how to market and deliver to a specific customer. 2. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the educational programs in the PGA Chapter or Sections (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). In 2011 I served on the Education and Junior Golf committees. Participation was on a voluntary basis. In April of this year I led a 4-hour WWC-PGA educational seminar titled Teaching Technology. We had over 30 professionals attend and learn what s

new and available in the world of instructional software, video systems, cameras, and much more. The focus of this seminar was primarily on instruction, or teaching teachers. I was very grateful for this opportunity and learned a lot in the process of creating this seminar. It was a great opportunity for me to meet some outstanding instructors and share stories about various successes and failures with various software programs and just have a chance to talk about instructional technique in general. I was particularly grateful to several well respected instructors in our section that attended the seminar and took the time to speak with me after and let me know that they really were impressed with the content and delivery of the seminar that meant a lot to me as a first time presenter and full time instructor. This was on a voluntary basis. 3. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions toward development of articles or materials related to and benefiting education. In delivering of the Teaching Technology education seminar I created a PowerPoint presentation that detailed all the variables of what is in the marketplace today. These variables included price points, ease of use, features, and availability. In my role of Program Director of the First Tee of N. Puget Sound at Lake Padden I have create multiple training material documents and class curriculums for the purpose of training our volunteer coaches. I have shared these with the Executive Director of our Chapter and they have critical in developing outstanding coaches for the program. 4. Please briefly describe the contributions the nominee has made to build the image of both PGA Professionals and the Association (Chapter or Section). I am the program coordinator for the First Tee of N. Puget Sound at Lake Padden. I try to exemplify the 9-core values (honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment) that are at the core of what the First Tee program is built upon. I am a volunteer committee member for the S.W.I.N.G. (Small Wonderful Individuals New at Golf) FORE Golf charity tournament to benefit the Children s Hospital of Seattle. This 9-hole event has raised over $20K in the last 2 years. I donate time and lessons certificates to these important community partners; - Bellingham Lions Club - Bellingham Boy & Girls Club - Bellingham Big Brothers & Big Sisters 2

- Bellingham Chamber of Commerce - Mt. Baker Elementary School - Assumption Elementary School 5. Please briefly describe how the nominee inspires fellow PGA Professionals and promotes the game of golf. I try to lead by example and demonstrate the 9 core values of the First Tee. I believe that we, as PGA Professionals, are always hoping to achieve a higher standard and looking for better ways to promote the game, teach the game and play the game. I was fortunate in 2011 to work with a staff of 6 PGA Members at Lake Padden; 5 of whom are currently or have previously been Head Golf Professionals. One might assume between the 6 of us we have seen it all. I try to be inspirational by showing them that knowledge is an ongoing process, I am always looking for ways to learn more and be better in my job as a PGA Professional. I serve on the Junior Golf Committee and Educational Committee for our Chapter and it has been a great experience for me. I remember in my first meeting with the Educational Committee that Steve Stensland said the more time you put into the committee the more you will get out of it. Although I had my doubts about his statement at first, he couldn t be more right. I led a 4-hour educational seminar this year and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a golf professional. I try to promote the game by staying involved with the PGA s Play Golf America programs. I look at the programs being offered and see what fits into our mission at Padden, if the two are a match then it s time to move forward. I also try to promote the game by helping local professionals. I taught a junior camp this summer at Sudden Valley Golf Course and it was a highlight of my summer. I met a new group of future golfers and also had a great time sharing ways to keep the game fun for the kids. I am always open to sharing ideas with anyone interested in promoting the game of golf. 6. Please list any Chapter, Section or National awards the nominee has received Award Year Received Chapter, Section, National Presidents Council 2009 & 2010 National Growth of the Game 3

Name of Nominee: Jon Schrader Member Number: Facility Name: Interbay Golf Center Facility Address: th Ave. W, Seattle WA Facility Phone Number: Nominee Address: Nomination submitted by: N/a The nomination form should be typewritten. 1. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the National PGA education program over the past five years (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). I have not had the opportunity to work on the National PGA education program. 2. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the educational programs in the PGA Chapter or Sections (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). During my tenure on the Assistant s Committee ( ) I worked to create the WWC PGM Mentor Series. This was a series of education opportunities designed specifically to help mentor our chapter apprentices through the PGM program. We paired the seminars / study groups with playing opportunities for the Winter Assistant s Tour and we had some great success with participation. I have since been providing directed study groups here at Interbay during the offseason for my assistants and the other apprentices here in our facility. I would like to see this program continue so that we can provide a structured support system for our chapter apprentices as they make there way through the program. 3. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions toward development of articles or materials related to and benefiting education. I have created power point presentations that I used to administer some of the PGM Mentor Series presentations, but these have not been adopted or used by the chapter in the last couple of seasons. 4

4. Please briefly describe the contributions the nominee has made to build the image of both PGA Professionals and the Association (Chapter or Section). Over the last two seasons, the Board of Directors has made a substantial effort to improve upon our community involvement and charitable contributions. I have been involved in some of these programs, and we have been able to raise a considerable amount of money for charities like the Folds of Honor Foundation and Camp Korey. I enjoy the time spent working for these charities, and I look forward to growing upon what we ve accomplished next season. 5. Please briefly describe how the nominee inspires fellow PGA Professionals and promotes the game of golf. I hope to inspire other Golf Professionals simply through my passion for the game and the PGA. I will work as diligently as I can to continue to provide the programs, education and playing opportunities that have made our chapter of the PGA great. Being at Interbay Golf Center gives us a great opportunity to grow the game of golf. We provide programs that are designed to get beginning golfers hooked on the game for life. It is our goal to provide the best instruction, club fitting, etiquette and rules instruction and to be the most FUN. We know that we are an entry level, stepping stone facility for many golfers and it is our responsibility to show the masses of people that come through our door each day that GOLF IS FUN, and that it is the sport of a lifetime. One area that I have been very passionate about is providing programs for women. I have worked with the EWGA to bring league play to Interbay and they have had a very successful season this year. We provide a Women s Day of Golf on an annual basis that brings nearly 200 women to the facility for free instruction, a fun tournament and trunk shows from women s apparel vendors. These days have been very well attended and have really gained the confidence of many of these women. I have also dedicated an area of the golf shop to women specifically, including clubs, clothing, gloves, hats, shoes and anything that women may need to learn to love the game. This has helped us earn the confidence of our female golfers and we have seen a 113% increase in women s apparel sales since Our club sales have also improved dramatically. I think that the best way that we can grow the game is to provide an unparalleled service level and the most enjoyable golfing experience that we can. 6. 6 Name of Nominee: Steven D. Stensland Member Number: Facility Name: Gig Harbor Golf Club Facility Address: 6909 Artondale Drive, Gig Harbor, WA Facility Phone Number: Nominee Address: The nomination form should be typewritten. 1. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the National PGA education program over the past five years (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). While my contributions to the National PGA education program have been limited I had the privilege of being invited and attending one of the Mentor and Coaching Summit s hosted around the country by PGA Magazine this summer at Overlake Country Club. They will be using this information they gained from this seminar and use it at the National Conference in October. 2. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the educational programs in the PGA Chapter or Sections (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). During 2011 I have been honored to serve as your education chairman. During this period I worked with an incredible committee, scheduling, planning and coordinating a wonderful year of seminars. While I serve as the chair the committee has done an incredible amount of work making 2011 as good as it was. A big thanks goes out to all of them and Mike Coury for his work as our Executive Director making education an important part of our chapter. One of my goals when asked to serve as the Education Chairs was to develop a seminar or many seminars that would involve our brothers and sisters within the industry bringing us all together into the same room to discuss industry trends, relative problems, and / or solutions. I am pleased to say we made this happen this past March with our Golf Summit co-sponsored by the WWPGA / CMAA / WWGCSA / USGA and WSGA. The day was a great success with over 100 attendees from the industry with many board and club members from our chapter facilities joining us. 6

3. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions toward development of articles or materials related to and benefiting education. In July of 2011 I was honored when asked to submit a Best Practice to the PGA Magazine regarding Get Golf Ready program we ran at our club. 4. Please briefly describe the contributions the nominee has made to build the image of both PGA Professionals and the Association (Chapter or Section). As the Club Director of a private club I am involved in building the image of the game of golf on a daily basis. This is accomplished by mentoring and training our staff (from the superintendent to the range attendant) to make Gig Harbor Golf Club the best facility it can be by working as a team for the membership. Professionally I am so proud to be a member of the PGA and to be able to have a career that revolves around a game (I can t imagine doing anything else). I hope that my service to the association and my volunteer time both on the board of your chapter and my volunteering within the community represent not only Gig Harbor Golf Club but the PGA of America and my fellow professionals in a positive manner! 5. Please briefly describe how the nominee inspires fellow PGA Professionals and promotes the game of golf. My goal as a PGA Professional is to be the best I can be. In order for this to happen we need to learn everyday and obtain the highest level within our Association. This is why completing and passing the Certified Professional Program was an important next step for me to go though. I am thrilled to say that in 2011 I passed both the Golf Operations and General Management phases. Steve Stensland doing the work to gain certification may not inspire anyone but I know that it has inspired me to working towards Master Professional. Additionally I can use it as a tool to motivate my assistants that if I can make it through relearning this information they can to! Finally it has helped me understand a little more of the process the new assistants are going through, thus allowing me to help them along the way to becoming PGA Members. 6. Please list any Chapter, Section or National awards the nominee has received Award Year Received Chapter, Section, National Junior Golf Leader 1996 / 98 / 99 / 2000 Central Washington Merchandiser of Year 2007 Western Washington Golf Professional 2009 Western Washington Horton Smith 2010 Western Washington 7

Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the National PGA education program over the past five years (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). Brent has worked hard in promoting the game through many of the PGA education programs. Play Golf America has been a large part of his contribution through Get Golf Ready, Free Lesson Month, Family Golf Month, Women s Golf Month, Patriot Golf Day and Tee it Forward. Brent has thrived at introducing Get Golf Ready to over 50 students and has inspired many staff members at Chambers Bay to have a heart and work hard Patriot Golf Day. 2. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions to the educational programs in the PGA Chapter or Sections (indicate whether participation was on a voluntary or paid basis). Brent has attended several Section and Chapter educational opportunities as well as hosted the first Chapter playing workshop this last spring. Chambers Bay and the playing workshop was very popular educational opportunity. Brent hopes to continue and grow this workshop into a great avenue to inspire many Chapter pros to consider their own game as they approach the golf season each year. 8

3. Please briefly describe the nominee s contributions toward development of articles or materials related to and benefiting education. Brent wrote an instruction piece for the Cascade Golfer Magazine this year as well assisted in developing the layout and materials for the Chapter Playing Workshop 4. Please briefly describe the contributions the nominee has made to build the image of both PGA Professionals and the Association (Chapter or Section). Brent personifies the PGA professional both at Chambers Bay and in his community in Tumwater Washington. He teaches golf to many juniors on his own time and always make it a priority to be a professional in the community at all times. Brent was told once by his mentor professional Kevin Myers You are always a golf professional everyone you go, you are always on so represent the PGA well in all you do. Brent has seemed to take this to heart and takes great care with this call. 5. Please briefly describe how the nominee inspires fellow PGA Professionals and promotes the game of golf. Brent is an inspiration to many fellow PGA Professionals simply with his passion that comes across in all he does. Brent has had several young people work under him in the last five years that have gone on to further their careers. Also with Brent s position at Chambers Bay has had an opportunity to help many aspiring professionals find jobs at other facilities. The greatest inspiration you will gain from Brent is playing a match on the course, he becomes a kid in the candy store and is just a joy to be around. 6.
