1 June Issue - Volume 2018 LEAVENWORTH GOLF GAZETTE What s Happening Golf Shop News The Bavarian was a huge success. We had more teams than last year and a bigger payout due to more sponsors and the efforts of Steve Ballew to keep this tournament running. Congratulations to Preston Thornton and Jesse Mack on winning Low Gross and Simon Farivar and Luke Easterly on winning Low Gross. Up next is the Alpine on Wednesday, June 13th. This event always fills up and is a lot of fun with everyone helping out. The Cascade Medical Foundation is Monday, June 18th and is a great fundraiser for our local hospital. Gentlemen, sign ups are in the golf shop for the Men s and Senior s Club Championship. Please register, so we can start filling out the match play brackets. The is also on the search for a new Secretary/Treasurer. Hopefully everyone is getting used to our new software system and staying in tune with all of our social media and website thanks to Clay. Please be aware that we are starting to get busier with more public play and outside groups. If you need to cancel or modify a tee time, please inform the pro shop or you are able to cancel your time outside of 24 hours. If it is within 24 hours of your tee time, you will have to contact the pro shop. We are off to a great start this season. Thank you everyone for recruiting new members, bringing out guests, playing on and under pace, and making 2018 a phenomenal season. David Naboychik PGA Head Golf Professional June Is Sun Protection Month!! Father s Day, U.S. Open. June Rocks! Price Match Guarantee - show us the ad and we will match the price.

2 Welcome New Members Doug Drew Steve & Lisa Miller Glen & Lisa Halseth Rick Woodward Golf Grounds News Last year we had a strange spring, it was wet and cold. Then once June came it seemed to transition from winter right into summer, as if spring never existed. This year we have been blessed with temperate weather for the last 6 weeks. What a good year to grow grass. Even the farmers have gotten their first cutting of hay. Here at the LGC the turf has recovered from the winter damage, and it isn t hot yet, so our dry spots are only just beginning to show. What a great window for golf right now. The golf course is playing as well as I have ever seen it. I would like to remind everybody of the importance of fixing you ball marks correctly. So often I see a ball mark that has been improperly repaired. It takes a long time for them to heal back up if it is not done right. Make sure you have an actual ball mark repair tool; our pro shop has an excellent selection of very nice tools. It must have two prongs, you can t properly fix marks with a golf tee or a single pronged object. One prong is the pivot, and the other prong moves the turf back into the hole. Only move turf back into the hole, never pry up the soil from the bottom. If you see a brown spot when you are done, then you didn t do it correctly. Another reminder is to always place the rakes back in the bunkers. After you rake your footprints out of the trap then please place the rake back in the bunker. Do not leave them on the edge where they are in the way. - As you have probably seen, we are midway through the fence construction on hole number three. Once it is complete I will move the OB stakes inside of the fence. Ivan Gibbs Superintendent

3 From The Board of Director s On May 1 st Simon Farivar and Tim Cort officially joined the Board replacing Mike McNeilly and Jay Garza whose terms had expired. Officers were then elected at the May Board meeting with Sally Sebring elected Chairperson, Tom McGrath Vice Chair, and Simon Farivar Secretary. LGC is getting off to a great start this spring with good weather, good course conditions, Pro Shop looking great, along with the new social activities offered by the Wild Huckleberry. We are currently working to ensure that all relationships and commitments that were previously managed by Mike and Jay have been reassigned to current Board members. If you think that we may be missing something please let one of your Board members know. The Board is also working to establish a set of disciplined processes that will make our meetings and the activities assigned to committees more efficient and transparent to all LGC members. A Decision Log will help make Board decisions clear by separating actual decisions from discussions documented in the meeting minutes. An Action Item Log will be used to document action taken, expected results, when they are due and the responsible person or persons. This will allow the Board to track activity and follow up when further action is required. In June, the Board will begin the planning process needed to develop the 2019 Business Plan and the Club s long range Strategic Plan. These plans will be provided to LGC s Membership 30 days prior to the Fall meeting where they will be voted on and approved. The new Board is committed to getting more members involved in Club activities. If you have an interest in working to improve the Club please let one of the Board members know the area of your interest and what skills and experience you would bring to the team. The Board will maintain a roster of members willing to help and will draw on this list as projects arise. Looking forward to a really great year. Sally Sebring - Chairperson Leavenworth Golf Course Last Fall several members expressed a desire for the Board to entertain the idea or proxy voting as there are a number of members who fly south for the winter but still want their voices heard, especially when it comes to the election of our Board Members. But as we discussed at the Spring Meeting, a Proxy Voting System is not something the Board can support for a number of reasons. However, one suggestion was made to extend the Spring Member Meeting/Board Elections and the Spring Opener Tournament later in the month of April to allow for more members to return. This idea was revisited at the May Board Meeting, and was APPROVED after a brief discussion. It was the Board's opinion that moving the Meeting/Elections/Spring Opener to the last weekend in April going forward will provide more time for members to return to the area and be able to attend, this later date would more closely tie into the newly elected Board Member term start date (May 1) and the additional time would also help the course heal up more from the winter. We believe this was a terrific idea that we hope is a win-win for everyone. Tom Magrath - Vice Chairman

5 Information Wow, what happened to May? Didn't we just start May? And all of a sudden it's over! The 47th Bavarian Tournament happened on the 19th and 20th and "MEMORIAL DAY" is on Monday the 28th. Please Honor our Veterans for all they have done in the past and all they will do for us in the Future. They deserve our support. I'd like to ask everyone to thank David for all that he did on the Bavarian Tournament. Have you ever watched his fingers fly over the keyboard? Thank you David, I learned a "WHOLE BUNCH"! Also, The Association of the LGC is in need of volunteers for the upcoming ALPINE INVITA- TIONAL. The have always been there for us, lets help them out. Let the folks at the front desk know that you can volunteer for a few hours of your time I been asked many times as the Handicap chairperson of the LGC What I would do if someone was breaking "THE RULES" DURING A COMPETITION"? I answer that very simply by saying that "THE RULES IN ALL COMPETITIONS APPLY TO EVERYONE EQUALLY AND FAIRLY". It's amazing to me in this day and age of the "Smartphone, the personal "Pad" the PC or Old School, the book of the "RULES OF GOLF of the USGA and ROYAL and Ancient, that people cannot and do not KNOW THE BASIC RULES!!!! I don't like the idea of "Saying it, But "Cheating" is just that "Cheating everyone in a Competition"! Especially if you win money or prizes! I've been asked so many questions about rules infractions, especially just recently, that it is mind numbing! There are many differant ways to handle any situation as per the "Rules"! The rules give you every chance to make the proper score! I find it amazing that anyone who says, "Everybody does it"! "I've always played that way", should not be allowed to play in any "COMPETITION"! So, when you are sitting in your cart at the end of the round and adding the scores up and getting the card signed and attested, "Ask yourself if it is "A LEGAL CARD, DID I PLAY TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE BY THE "RULES"! If you can answer yes, then your a good golfer. Club Information June is an exciting month for the Leavenworth Golf Association. June 13 th we will host the 49 th annual Alpine Invitational Golf Tournament. The field is filling fast and limited to 100 players. We have received an outpouring of support from sponsors throughout the valley. That enables us to contribute to a scholarship fund and support a local charity. This tournament has always been a great success thanks to the hard work of all the LLGA members and the golf course staff. June 27 th we are inviting the Kahler Glen Club to join us for our Wednesday play. It will be a great opportunity to meet new friends and share our beautiful course. We invite you to join our weekly play as a guest and see if joining the LLGA is right for you. We play Wednesdays and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m.. For more information please contact Patty Frigard or Cindy Kent We look forward to meeting you. Patty Frigard President, Division Mike Horey President, Men's Division
