MOHANSIC GOLF LEAGUE Established 1948 RULES ) SCHEDULE AND STANDINGS The M. G. L. Season will consist of three rounds of five matches with an open date between rounds. At the end of three rounds, total wins will determine team and class standings. The tiebreaker is the number of tied matches. If ties still occur there will be playoffs on the first Tuesday following completion of the last round You must play 12 of the 15 rounds to qualify for individual honors. Your best 12 scores will be averaged and used to determine individual class champions. 2) MATCH POINT SYSTEM There are four match points possible for each A, B, C, and D class match: one point for match play on the front nine; one point for match play on the back nine; one point for match play on the 18 holes; and one point for the lower combined gross scores of both partnerships. In cases of ties, points are halved. Each class A, B, C, and D match may be won, lost, or tied depending on the match points won by the players on the class team. Each team shall compare the sum of match points won by its A, B, C, and D players with the total of its opponents to determine the outcome of the match. There are two points for a win, one for a tie, and none for a loss. 3) PLAYING TIME League matches are scheduled for Tuesdays with starting times to fall within the block of time reserved by the league. If all participants agree an individual match may be rescheduled for either an earlier time or they may be scheduled during one of the three make up weeks during the season. This may be done only in the case of emergencies or unyielding conflicts it is not to be done for personal preference or convenience. There is no
time limit on how far in advance a match may be played. Scorecards for matches played in advance should show both the scheduled date and the date their match was actually played. This year we are stressing playing all matches on Tuesdays. If you cannot play on Tuesday, get a substitute. Scorecards must be turned in by evening of the scheduled Tuesday. For the statistician s information, please turn in an incomplete scorecard marked rain out when your match is rained out. There is an open week after each round. This week will be used for rainouts, make ups, earlier matches played, and on each of these weeks there will be a tournament. If all four players cannot play at the scheduled time or cannot agree to another time, they may agree to play a split match. In a split match one player from each team competes at one time or day and the other player from each team competes at another time or day. At the end of both parts of the match all scores are entered on one scorecard and the match is scored as if all four players had played together. If agreement cannot be reached on arrangements to play a match at a time other than the scheduled time, then the player who cannot play at the scheduled time must get a substitute or forfeit all or part of the match. 4) SUBSTITUTES If you cannot play a match you must arrange to have a substitute from the APPROVED SUBSTITUTE LIST play for you. You should advise your partner and opponents as a matter of courtesy. Substitutes may play in regular matches only, not in play off matches. A two some may have only one substitute per match. If one player has a substitute and the other team member does not show up, the substitute may not compete alone for points and the opponents win the match by forfeit. Each player may have only three substitutes per year; however the Executive Board may make exceptions to this rule if warranted by extreme circumstances. Changes in the substitute list will be posted on the league bulletin board (located just inside Arturo s 19 th Hole) and outside the pro shop. LATE SHOW NO SHOW FORFEITS When two teams have a mutually agreed upon tee time, the match shall begin within 15 minutes of that time whether or not all players are present. Missing players are permitted to join play anywhere on the course. Upon the arrival of late players, scoring will be as follows: The absence of one or both players from any team will result in the forfeit of the gross score point for that team even if only one hole is missed. 2
The single player of one team shall play match play against the other team until his tardy partner joins play. The late arriving player is not permitted to play the missing holes for scoring purposes. If a player calls the golf course or notifies his partner and opponents, before the pre arranged starting time, then the opponents will have the option of waiting for his arrival or beginning play at the pre arranged time. If both players on a team cannot play or do not show up for a match, they shall forfeit the match to the team that played. The playing team shall keep their scores and turn in a completed scorecard, which shall be marked no show or forfeit. If a match is forfeited in advance the winners must still play and turn in a scorecard. 6) RAIN OUTS, DELAYS, POSTPONEMENTS When heavy rain, lightning, or other dangerous weather causes unplayable conditions the following will apply: If play is suspended, no matter what hole you are on, each team should sign the others card. Play will resume from the point at which all 4 players have completed a hole. If you stay on the course and wait until conditions are playable, you will continue from the point where play was suspended. Matches that are not started or played because of rainout, dangerous weather or course closure are considered to be postponed. In inclement weather the Executive team will post a notice declaring a clean and place rule for the day. 7) LOCAL RULES The following conditions shall be the same for all players and they may not be changed by any group: Play the ball as it lies. You may rake and drop your ball (from knee height), in its original location, in any sand trap. All putts must be finished. NO GIMMIES. Triple bogey is the highest score to be posted on any hole. Once a player is two over par on a hole he shall pick up and take a triple bogey. In case of a rules dispute, the player in question shall play a provisional ball, record both scores, and submit the dispute for a determination by the rules committee. 3
The current USGA rules of golf shall govern all other situations. Memorial rock on Hole Three (left side) is an obstruction. Your ball may be dropped if the rock interferes with your swing or stance, not line of sight. Yardage measuring devices are permitted. In extreme cases when conditions demand it, the executive team will post a notice declaring preferred lies in effect. In this case, a player may lift clean and place his ball This year in our quest to somehow speed up the glacial pace of play, for league play, the woods on the left side of the sixth hole will now be treated as a LATERAL HAZARD. Players may drop a ball within 2 club lengths of the point where the ball entered the woods and proceed under penalty of 1 stroke. The same shall apply to the woods to the left of hole number 8. On number eight, the left edge of the cart path will serve as the Margin of the Lateral. There will be a Drop Area outlined on hole 13. A player hitting his tee shot into the woods on EITHER side shall have the option of re teeing or going to the drop area and playing from there. In either case, the player will be playing his third stroke. Prior to leaving the tee, you need to hit your provisional (remember to state you are hitting a provisional) prior to leaving the tee. You cannot go back or you will take the MAX score on that hole. 8) POSTING SCORES Completed scorecards must be posted by evening of the league scheduled date. Mistakes on individual scores will be corrected. No changes will be made once team scores are attested to and posted. It is strongly recommended each team keep a scorecard. The following scorekeeping instructions shall apply: Appoint one player in the foursome as the scorekeeper. He must sign the card and have it attested by one of the opponents. The scorecard must be marked with: BOTH TEAM NAMES, LAST NAMES OF ALL PLAYERS, SCHEDULED DATE OF MATCH, PLAYING DATE OF MATCH (IF DIFFERENT), CLASS, AND MATCH POINTS FOR EACH TEAM IF DIFFERENT. Match points and individual scores are to be entered in Pencil on the master scoreboard. Deposit scorecards in the box adjacent to the master scoreboard. 4
9) FAST PLAY In 1994 the MGL changed the USGA RULES OF GOLF Section 1, Etiquette to read as follows: If a match fails to keep its pace on the course and loses more than one clear hole on the players in front of it MUST ALLOW (changed from should invite ) the match following to pass. Rangers will enforce this rule on our matches for the good and welfare of the league. PLAY READY GOLF WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Any player may hit when ready even if he is not the farthest from the hole. Players may also hit when ready on the tees, but not on the greens. Continuous putting. Players farthest from the cup should putt out except if it means stepping on another s line. OTHER SUGGESTIONS Be prepared and think ahead. Plan you next shot in advance (don t wait for others to hit before you plan your shot). Leave your clubs and cart toward the next tee, not on the far side or in front of the green. Replace the pin for the last putter. Discuss scores and mark the scorecard after clearing the green for play. Don t cause others to wait or back away from their shots because you are moving or talking. Watch or spot the shots hit by others. Urge your group to speed up or let others play through if there is an open hole ahead of you. If you are driving a cart, leave one player at his ball with several clubs and drive to your ball. Do what you can to speed up play. 5
