2 PAGE 2 OF 6 FOCUS ON SHORT GAME It is an obvious statement that shooting the lowest score possible should be the goal of any round. It is puzzling, however, that when I ask one of my standard pre-lesson questions, "What is your desire for our time together today?" that shooting a lower score is almost never mentioned. I hear wishes for longer drives, more consistency, no more slicing and many others. I am not saying these are bad goals, just that the ULTIMATE goal does not seem to be given much direct attention. This slide shows how the game of golf can be divided into three categories: full swing shots, short shots and putting. Putting combined with the short shots of chipping, pitching and bunker play account for roughly 2/3 of all shots taken on the course with full swing shots making up the remaining 1/3. The majority of my lessons work primarily on full swing mechanics while only a minority of students have a desire to work on the majority of the game. Additionally, quite a lot of the smaller shot fundamentals can help build the foundation for the full swing motions - a two for one deal if there ever was one. I enjoy, even relish, finding more power and full swing control for one of my students - it really is a joy, but if shooting lower scores is the ultimate goal, shouldn't we work on the smaller areas of the game too? 3 PAGE 3 OF 6 GOLF TIP OF THE MONTH PROPER GRIP By Jamie Fordyce, PGA No fundamental is more important to a consistent, powerful swing than having a good solid grip on the club. The main functions of the grip are to control the club and allow your wrists to hinge properly throughout the swing. Putting your hands properly on the club each time is essential to having control of your shots. When preparing to take your grip on the club, first see that the club head is properly aimed and soled, then take the club firmly in your left hand with the back of the left hand facing your target, then put your right hand lightly on the club with your right palm facing your target. The center of your right palm should fit against your left thumb. Hold the club securely in your left hand throughout the swing to maintain control of the club and your swing path. Never tighten your right hand on the club, if you do your wrists will not hinge and unhinge properly.
