1 WOMEN S GOLF NOTES Last Update: February 27, SEASON A 14th consecutive West Coast Conference title and the team s 12th trip to the NCAA Championships are among the goals for the Pepperdine women s golf team. Laurie Gibbs, in her 22nd season as head coach, has one All-American among her fi ve returning players, plus two newcomers. ROSTER The eight-player breakdown is two seniors, one junior, two sophomores and two freshmen. CHOW Junior Marissa Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Iolani HS) is the team s top returner. This past summer, she played in the U.S. Open (and actually led early in the fi rst round when she birdied four of the fi rst six holes). Last season, she earned Golfweek All-American third team status and ranked #29 nationally by both Golfstat and Golfweek/Sagarin. Her scoring average of was the sixth-best mark in school single-season history. Her career average of currently ranks second all-time at Pepperdine. In , she s already won her fi rst college tournament (capturing the Golfweek Conference Challenge by four strokes), plus fi nishes of T-4th at the Stanford Intercollegiate and sixth at the Dick McGuire Invitational. Her stroke average this season is and 10 of her 18 rounds have been below-par. She was named the WCC Player of the Month for September (her second such honor of her career). OTHER RETURNERS Juniors Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/ Punahou School) and Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) have both earned sports on the All-WCC fi rst team twice in their three years. Sophomores Alessandra Arza (Asuncion, Paraguay) and Andrea Unson (Manilla, Philippines) saw limited action last year as freshmen. NEWCOMERS The Waves went international to add their two newest players: Tatiana Wijaya (Jakarta, Indonesia/Shenton College) and Katherine Zhu (Vancouver, B.C./Zhuji Hailiang Private School). GOLFWEEK CONFERENCE CHALLENGE Pepperdine and Tennessee were neck-and-neck the entire tournament, but the Waves were able to edge the Lady Vols by one shot and claim their third straight Golfweek Conference Challenge title (Sept at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo) and fourth in six years. Marissa Chow shot a 6-under 210 to earn medalist honors by four strokes. SPRING SCHEDULE The Waves have four events before the championship season begins. They re at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (Feb. 8-10), the UC Irvine Invitational (Feb ), the Bruin Wave Invitational (March 2-3) and The Farms Invitational (March 23-25). The Waves have appeared in the NCAA Championships 11 times in 16 years, with eight top-10 fi nishes and four top-fi ve showings, including a program-best secondplace result in The Waves have won West Coast Conference championships in 16 of the last 17 years, including a current streak of 13 titles that began in Twelve different players have earned All-American honors a total of 26 times. LPGA Tour players have included Katherine Hull, Lindsey Wright, Tamie Durdin, Nadina (Taylor) Light, Misun Cho, Carolina Llano, Danielle Kang and Taylore Karle. Hull was the 2003 National Player of the Year and was inducted into the WGCA Hall of Fame in Kang won back-to-back U.S. Amateur Championships in 2010 and Gibbs has been honored 11 times as the WCC s Coach of the Year, was tabbed the West Region Coach of the Year on two occasions and was selected the National Coach of the Year by Golfweek magazine. ABOUT PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I championships in fi ve different men s sports one of just 17 schools to have accomplished this feat and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affi liated with a major conference. The Waves have won a total of 23 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that s given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in ). Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacifi c Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation s most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affi liated with the Church of Christ, ranks #54 overall on U.S. News and World Report s list of America s best
