1 CELEBRATING 24 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association January 2016 From The President Happy New Year, ASGA Tampa! As the January calendar turns over a new year, the 2015 ASGA board turns over its duties to a new board, too. You know those New Year s resolutions we all make to play better golf, to stay in touch with old friends and make new friends, to stay fit--yes, those resolutions. The 2016 board is here to help you keep them. The golf committee s January golf outings are in place. The social committee has set up good times well into February. Our newsletter, website, and will keep you up to date. Check out our events and join us on the fairways. It s the easiest resolution you can make. As for me, your new president of the 2016 board, my resolution is to continue to deliver on the ASGA motto of fun, fairways, and fellowship. With my 2016 board s talent, that is the easiest resolution I ll make. Meet your new board at the monthly meeting January 12 at The Eagles and welcome the start of a great year of ASGA golf, Tampa style. ~Julie Miller From The Golf Chairs First, thank you to Sharon for all her efforts in providing great golf outings in 2015! It's a big responsibility! Congratulations to Sherry Lapine and Ray Preston for winning the Club Championship game at Westchase in December! Speaking of responsibility, you will have two of us in 2016 to schedule great venues, great prices, and with a few changes. The majority of our events this year will offer you a choice: either play your own ball or play in a team event (ex. Scramble). Each of these formats will have a game where each person will put in $3 towards prize money (two prize pots- one for people who play their own ball and one for the team event). Then everyone will chip in $1 towards one pot for closest to pin awards. We will strive for shotgun starts for all of our events, golf fees under $45 in season and much less off peak. Most events (two per month) will be on Sunday's as that is when we can get the best deals. Our website (Tampabaysinglesgolf.com) has added some changes for signing up for golf events: 1) area to check whether you will be playing your own ball or in the team event, 2) list your official handicap or your average score, if you do not have a handicap. We strongly encourage you sign up for a GHIN handicap as it only costs $15 a year thru ASGA. 3) One area added for you to see all upcoming events at a glance. We want to see our attendance grow at our golf events. However, if your plans change, please be considerate and cancel your spot by calling either one of us in a timely fashion. No shows create huge problems. The buffet, music and venue were just all awesome. Everyone had so much fun and seemed to dance to every song. The only complaint I heard was about people's sore legs the next day! Special thanks to Jean Trunks for the work she put into getting us that banquet room. Social has a few things arranged for January and February so please save these dates. The happy hours are on January 8th and January 29th. Both are Friday nights. On the 8th. Come to the Whistle Stop from 4-7 for great food and drinks. The address is: 915 Main Street Safety Harbor. We are going to The Chart House on the Courtney Campbell Causeway on the 29th. Again the time is from 4-7 pm January 16th we are going to play glo golf at The Municipal golf course in Largo. The address is: Street North. The start time is 6 p.m. This is walking nine holes and playing with a glow soccer ball. The cups are as big as the soccer ball. (Can we kept them for our golf game?) Perfect, right? For $20.00 we get the nine holes, and a domestic beer and a choice of many wraps. They also have coolers, wine, bottled beer and wine vodka and wine rum. He told me mixed it tastes just fine! Now the February schedule: Happy hours are at Carrabas, 2680 Gulf to Bay on Friday, February 12th. The Chart House Wednesday, February the 24th. February the 7th is super bowl Sunday. We are golfing at Cove Cay and then staying right there and eating, partying and watching the super bowl. February 19th, Bryan Adams is at Coachman Park, 405 Cleveland Street, Clearwater. To continue with your ASGA Handicapping you MUST pay for the service by January 15, $15.00 Handicapping adds considerably to the pleasure of golfers, making it possible for players of differing abilities to compete equitably. We all joined ASGA to meet people and have fun. Since we play in organized team -driven events, doesn't it make sense to maintain an official handicap. Handicaps are used as tools in pairing teams, and they are necessary for equitable scoring. Tampa Bay ASGA encourages its members to establish a handicap Index and post scores regularly. The desire to lower your handicap can be a great incentive.
