11 SUPERINTENDENT UPDATE Hillendale Members, BRAD NOVOTNY HEAD GREENS SUPERINTENDENT As September ends with above average temperatures, we are looking forward to the cooler seasonal temperatures of October. Even though we have seen a decrease in rain along with these warmer conditions, we have been pushing the new seed in our fairways to recover from the wet wilt we experienced this year. October is always a fun month for us because the weather related stresses on the course are reduced, the colors on the views around the course change with trees, and we have some really fun events planned. Along with Brad s Revenge on October 11, one of my favorites of the year, we also have the first annual Uptown Hoedown. We re going to utilize my Golf Course Maintenance Facility next to #1 fairway for the event and turn it into a great space for a unique and fun event. Please sign up asap! As always, I look forward to seeing you at the club, Brad G O L F H O U R S O F OPERATION MONDAY TUESDAY-FRIDAY SATURDAY & SUNDAY GOLF SHOP CLOSED 7:30a.m.-6:00p.m. 7:00a.m.-6:00p.m. BAG ROOM 11:00a.m.-6:30p.m. 7:00a.m.-6:30p.m. 7:00a.m.-6:30p.m. DRIVING RANGE 11:00a.m.-6:30p.m. 8:00a.m.-6:30p.m. 7:00a.m.-6:30p.m. HALFWAY HOUSE CLOSED 9:00a.m.-2:00p.m.(Fridays) 9:00a.m.-2:00p.m. *All hours are weather permitting* The Driving Range will close at 6:30p.m. except for Sunday evenings. 12 GOLF UPDATE BRANDON GRECCO HEAD GOLF PRO M A T C H O F T H E C E N T U R Y Hole #7 ~ 178 Yards After a solid birdie on #6, the tee was now Brandon s on the difficult Par 3 7th hole. With the pin in a tricky back-right location, this already challenging hole would be no picnic! Playing 182 yards to the pin with a solid one-club wind into the players, Brandon chose a knock-down 4-iron in hopes of landing something in the middle of the green and leaving himself feet up the hill for a birdie. He set-up to the ball with the ball position slightly back of middle just trying to punch something into the wind. As soon as he hit it he knew the ball was going left, the only drama left was to see how far left it would go! As he helplessly watched, his ball sailed over the left bunker and took a vicious kick towards the native grass area no good! Sensing an opening, R.G. decided to hit a 5-iron, with the same intention, hit the middle of the green, especially with your opponent in trouble! R.G. s plan didn t work much better, his shot sailed right off the green and continued to cut towards the 8th tee box, landing just on the other side of the cart path, pin-high but extremely short-sided! Not knowing if he would find his ball, Brandon opted to play a provisional ball just as he had on Hole #1 to begin the match playing provisional balls is not a habit you want to get used to! As is ALWAYS the case, his B player showed up and hit the shot exactly as he planned it-- a nice low draw 4-iron into the wind that hit the middle of the green and settled down just into the back fringe, 30 feet from the hole. The more he searched for his ball, the less he wanted to find it! After a couple of minutes, R.G. was able to locate Brandon s ball in the thick stuff, not an easy shot at all, but certainly playable. It was sitting on top of a tuft of grass that wasn t very solid underneath; he knew if he tried to get to cute with this shot he could easily slide the blade under the club and leave the ball right in front of him! He decided the best approach was to attack it like a bunker shot and splash it out of the grass in an attempt to get anywhere on the putting surface for a chance at par. He set up with his 58* wedge and did just that, caught just enough ball to get on the green, not far from where his provisional tee shot landed, leaving him 30 feet for an unlikely par 3. Next up was R.G., as great as his short-game is, he was going to have to dig deep in his bag of tricks to pull this one off! He had about yards of rough to carry and only 10 paces of green between him and the pin, not to mention that 10 feet of green was some of the slickest on the course! Best case scenario, he gets it on the green somewhere near the front left and has 30+ feet for par, if he s not careful this shot can end up short of the green causing a whole new set of issues! He set up with an open stance, opened the face and attempted to hit a high, soft flop shot. The shot came off perfectly, landing just in the fringe. Even with that, however, it still released all the way towards the front portion of the green. Not a bad shot, about as good as you can hope for without getting lucky and holing it! First to putt was Brandon, taking a line inches outside left of the cup, he hit his putt up the hill. It was tracking but it came up 10 inches short, the putt was then conceded for bogey 4. Next up was R.G., knowing he had to hit it hard to get up the hill, he gave it a little extra hit to get up the hill. He watched as the ball rolled towards the cup..and then by the cup. Just a bit outside the circle of friendship in this match! He was left with a delicate 5 footer back down the hill for a bogey and a halve of the hole. Like a true pro, he stepped up with no issue and hit a solid left-to-right breaking putt, right in the heart his 4! Brandon Grecco- 4 R.G. Hackett - 4 Match AS through 7
