Greens Management Plan History of tarps ( ) Winterization Plan (trends/dilemma) Winterization Outcomes Winterization Plan Greens replacement (actions taken) Health & Playability Development of Course Management Plan Chapter on greens: Winter Spring Summer Fall with performance measures each season Expectations end of year Tentative course closure date: Oct 15, 2013 (actual date will be confirmed online closer to the date) 3
Greens Management Plan History of Tarps Tarps on greens were originally used to prevent desiccation during winter (prevents ice cover & protects against cold winters) Now used to prevent injury from ice cover, cold temperatures and desiccation no tarps, greens wintered well no tarps, lack of snow, dry conditions (draught season) resulted in poor greens used tarps with straw insulation material, winter was longer than usual [175 days total], 2.5 snow cover Spring 2013 Injury symptoms 4
Greens Management Plan Winterization Trends/Dilemmas What happened to the greens? Theory about injury Insufficient food reserves meant that greens simply ran out of food. Long duration of snow cover, reduced plant health in fall, and susceptible grass species on green (poa annua more susceptible to this type of injury) were all factors that created injury. Differential injury. Success and failure of tarp systems? Similar systems used at other courses [Calgary & Edmonton Country Club and Innisfail] have not used monitoring system Moved to this system to prevent winter injury because of the trend towards minimal snow cover. Failure was unanticipated 5
Greens Management Plan Winterization Outcomes Tarp monitoring and removal checked under tarp, edges of greens seemed fine it s recommended to keep them covered longer to remain dormant; used white reflective cover to reflect sunlight and keep cooler Timing: couldn t physically remove earlier, still had over 2 snow cover in late April (April and May were twice as cold as previous 3 years) 6
Greens Management Plan Winterization Plan Bubble wrap will replace existing tarp system (benefits: reusable, decrease labour/removal time) Add ventilation system designed to exchange good air with bad (ability to test & monitor using specialized equipment) Cover all 18 greens (taking an extra step to cover bent grass) #18 has poor surface drainage potential for ice covering injury (purchased extra large tarps to minimize drainage issues) 7

Greens Management Plan Greens replacement actions taken Ten greens were re-surfaced in the spring of 2013 (5 weeks total 2 weeks to remove/reinstall; 3 weeks to grow to be playable) Back on greens June 19) 11 delayed from rain & flooding in southern Alberta Heath and playability expectations Acceptable levels of injury: no more than 10% injury on any green and no more than 5% overall Spring start-up (Apr-May) - main goal is recovery from winter Playable season (Jun-Aug) - excellent playability Fall health (Sep-Oct) - fertility, mowing heights 18
Course Maintenance Guide The greens will be maintained in accordance with Prairie Turfgrass Research Centre and USGA directives. Jim Ross will continue to have input on greens management plan. Regularly scheduled maintenance days (every second Wednesday) will continue in The golf course maintenance guide and standards will be developed further through the winter months. The emphasis will be on balancing plant health and playability. Expectations end of year 19
Tree Management Plan The objective is healthier trees, healthier turf and increased golfer satisfaction, while respecting neighbouring homeowners and established Strathcona County directives. A tree inventory and hazard assessment was completed for individual trees in January Of the 2,755 trees on the golf course: 68 posed an immediate risk (class 4) to the public and were addressed prior to the golf course 2013 opening 108 were deemed as hazardous (class 3) and work has been underway throughout the season Remaining trees (class 2, class 1) require monitoring every three to five years. 20
Tree Management Plan Based on USGA Tree Turf Advisory Service Visit Phase 1 Trees Complete 1 - removed trees shading green 3 - removed remaining poplars with roots coming green 6 - removed poplars on left side with roots into the green 7 - removed poplars on back right of green 8 - removed a couple poplars 9 - removed poplars on back left of green 18 - removed one behind the green 16 - coordinating with Beauvista intersection (6 trees) target Fall 2013 Phase Prioritize remaining - 5, 14, 12, 13, 15, 17, 10 *11 [*Oak St extensive public engagement] 21

Key Learning's & Q&A Key Learning's from League Presidents Important to League Players to have a strong start to the season Reducing multi-year impacts is important to players Q&A Why can t we explore the option to strip & prepare greens this Fall to replace in the spring? Turf is much better quality in September than May This option impacts 2014 spring start-up; want to avoid another delayed spring If 2 or 3 greens don t make it through the winter, will you repair in spring or wait till Fall as planned? Broadmoor commits to fix as quickly as possible; We will be prepared with a contingency Plan B 32
Key Learning's & Q&A Will there be a discount for Fall impacts? There will be a price that reflects the product up-front. Do you plan to re-contour the remaining 7 greens? Cost is a factor What are your plans for dealing with drainage on 10 & 12? Will changes to Beauvista improve drainage? Drainage from Beauvista is off-road and not connected to sewer system. We are exploring more economical options that may include a defined water feature such as a dry creek bed. Cost is a factor for different options. How can you improve rules of etiquette on the course including profanity, intoxication, respecting neighbours etc.? We will explore creative ways to better manage etiquette including staff training, signage and communications. 33
