8 Session Objectives By the end of this session participants will: Learn about the newly developed Community Golf Coach training program Be exposed to some the reasons for changing the former Future Links Leader Program Briefly see the differences of the former Future Links Leader program and the new Community Golf Coach program Try some of the learning activities from one module of the new training Understand why they should promote the Community Golf Coach program at their program, facility and/or association
9 What is a Community Golf Coach COMMUNITY GOLF COACH is a training program designed by the PGA of Canada in conjunction with the Coaching Association of Canada and Golf Canada to train and develop (typically volunteers) at the community level of golf. The PGA of Canada s COMMUNITY GOLF COACH training workshop is designed for the individual who wants to support children or youth by introducing the basic skills of golf. This workshop will prepare the coach to run CN Future Links programs.

Community Golf Coach Teaching and Learning Be introduced to how junior aged golfers learn, and in particular, learn motor skills Discuss the concept of fun and how it relates to youth sports Be introduced to the term discrete motor skill and it s relevance in learning golf skills Be exposed to age appropriate competition and activities that support these competitions Safety and Risk Management Be aware of common safety risks for the sport of golf and children ages 12 and younger Practice the prevention and management of common safety risks in golf and children ages 12 and younger Golf Equipment Be introduced to common equipment required to play golf Be exposed to myths about junior golf equipment and common faults in junior equipment used by children 12 and under Be exposed to alternative forms of junior golf equipment Technical Be introduced to basic technical aspects of putting, chipping and the full swing Be exposed to well performed executions of a variety skills by junior golfers Review and discuss basic skill matrices for putting, chipping and full swing Have an opportunity to complete micro teaching sessions focusing on the technical adjustments needed for a participant

Community Golf Coach Values Explore the role of sport and golf in the development of values in children Be introduced to The First Tee and the nine core values The First Tee stresses that golf can help develop Be introduced to the process of integrating the development of values in to activities that develop other sport specific skills Rules and etiquette Develop a list of specific rules of golf that are relevant for different age junior golfers Develop a list of specific behaviors that reflect age appropriate golf etiquette Ethical Coaching Distinguish between legal and ethical situations and be introduced to an ethical decision making model Activity Design Be exposed to a variety of nontraditional equipment that can be used in junior golf activities Focus on safety within each activity and appropriate ratio of junior to Future Links Leaders Develop an inventory of tools and equipment that can be used in future planning and implementation of junior golf sessions
