How to Fix Your Mishits in 3 Steps From the desk of Tom Stickney: - Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher - Creator, The Perfect Impact System There s no way to avoid it When learning to play this game, you are going to hit a lot of bad shots. You re going to hit slices, hooks, tops, chunks, pushes, pulls and every other frustrating mishit you can think of. Now if you want to have any hope of correcting these you need to first understand what causes them. This is especially true if you don t always have a qualified instructor watching you swing. The good news is that thanks to technological advances in the past decade or so, we now have a full understanding of what causes these mishits. One of these technologies is called a Doppler radar launch monitor (You may have heard them referred to by their more common brand names Trackman and FlightScope). A launch monitor is a device that hooks up to a computer and measures just about everything that happens when you make impact with a golf ball.
It measures things like the exact angle of your club face, the direction of your club path, the club head speed, ball speed, spin rates, launch angles and on and on. Below is an example of what a golf instructor might see on his screen after a student takes a swing. As you can see there is a TON of data there. Launch monitors have revealed a lot about the golf swing, but don t worry You don t need to run out and buy one for yourself (they cost thousands of dollars), be a mathematician, or even understand a single one of those numbers to put that knowledge to use in YOUR game. You see, by studying all these measurements on thousands of golfers we can now zoom in on the most important elements of the swing. So I want you to forget about all of those numbers above and just focus on the following 2 aspects of the impact position (I call them Impact Factors ).
Impact Factor #1: Club Face Angle Your Club Face Angle is the direction your club face is pointing relative to your target at impact. Your Club Face Angle can be in 1 of 3 conditions: open, closed, or square relative to the target. Impact Factor #2: Club Path The Club Path is the direction your club head is moving relative to your target at impact. Again there are 3 possibilities, as shown below: So far, so good, right?
OK, so now I am going to show you how powerful these 2 Impact Factors are In fact, studying the data on thousands of golfers has confirmed that these 2 Impact Factors alone will tell you most of what you need to know about what is causing your mishits. By using what I call the New Ball Flight Rules, you will know exactly what is causing your slices, your hooks, your pushes, and your pulls and you ll know what you need to fix to get your shots back in line! The New Ball Flight Rules While there are a lot of little factors that can influence your ball flight, I m going to make it real simple and give you 2 Ball Flight Rules that will tell you everything you need to know. The 85% Rule: The 85% Rule states that 85% of your ball s initial flight direction is determined by where your club face is pointing at impact. Don t get caught up on the exact percentage the number will vary slightly from club to club and from swing to swing. What s important is simply to understand that the majority of your ball s direction is determined by where your club face is pointing at impact. This is a great rule of thumb when you are practicing If your ball is starting out right or left of your target, you know you need to work on your club face angle to straighten it out!
The Away From the Path Rule: The Away From the Path Rule helps you understand why your ball slices or hooks. The rule is as follows: When your club path and club face angle are pointing in different directions, the ball with curve AWAY from the swing path and towards the face angle (assuming centered impact). Here are a couple of examples to give you a better idea of how to use the New Ball Flight Rules: Example 1 Push Slice: Here is how we would apply the New Ball Flight Rules in this example. The 85% Rule says the ball will start in the direction of the Club Face Angle. In this example the Club Face Angle is to the right of the target (green line), and so the ball starts out right of the target.
The Club Path (red line) is different from the Club Face Angle, so the ball will curve away from the Club Path and towards the Club Face. And as you can see the ball flight that results from this impact position is the push fade (blue arrow above). Example 2 Pull Slice: Let s apply the New Ball Flight Rules The Club Face Angle is closed (green line), and so according to the 85% Rule, the ball will start left of the target. The Club Path (red line) is different from the Club Face Angle, so the ball will curve away from the Club Path and towards the Club Face. The result is the pull slice shown by the blue arrow. Once again the ball starts in the direction the club face is pointing at impact, and curves away from the club path.
Example 3 Pull: And finally let s look at a 3 rd example Here we have the Club Face Angle (green line) pointing left of the target, and so according to the 85% Rule, the ball will start left of the target. The Club Path is in the same direction as the Club Face Angle, and so the ball won t curve remember according to the Away From the Path Rule, curvature happens when your Club Path and Club Face Angle are pointing in different directions. And so in this example the ball will start out in the direction of the Club Face Angle and continue straight in that direction (a pull).
Using the New Ball Flight Rules to Fix YOUR Mishits OK so now you understand the 2 Impact Factors and what the New Ball Flight Rules tell how about your ball flight here is how can you put this information to use in your game the next time you are practicing out on the range: 1) Build a practice station with sticks on the ground along your feet and your target line so you know exactly where you are lined up (see photo below).
Hit the ball and ask yourself the following 2 questions: 2) Where did the ball begin relative to the target line? a. If your ball started out left of the target line, your club face was pointed left of the target at impact b. If your ball started out right of the target line, your club face was pointed right of the target at impact 3) Did the ball curve away from its starting direction? a. If the ball curved to the left of where it started, your path was right of your ball s starting direction b. If the ball curved to the right of where it started, your path was left of your ball s starting direction Once you ve answered these questions you can back into the impact conditions of your Club Path and Club Face Angle and know exactly what you need to adjust to get the ball flight you are looking for! Just remember this is not an exact science and other elements of your impact position can alter these curvatures (for example if you hit the ball way off center of the club face). But it is an easy way to understand what is going on in your swing and something I use with my students all of the time. So try it out on the range and have some fun with it!
